4,000 people left homeless by landslide in La Paz

"The mountain was split in two. The crash was on the spot. The four-storey houses were in a vacuum. The paved streets like puzzle pieces. There were only two injuries. The losses enormous"said Revilla.

La Paz. - The slide of thousands of tons of earth that began Saturday night until today left about 4,000 homeless people in 11 neighborhoods (Barrios) of the east side of La Paz, Bolivia's seat of government, the mayor Luis Revilla.

"La Paz  suffered a megalandslide as a result of the sudden activation of geodynamic movement dating back to 1930, in an area of 80 to 100 hectares," the municipality of La Paz, told DPA.

Revilla Mayor said the slippage of the Vall of Las Flores and surrounding neighborhoods affected some 800 buildings.
...
"On Saturday it rained almost all day. At night the mountain began to roar. Frightened left the house and the street was a lot of people screaming. Then the land sank and the houses were falling one after another," said Zenobio Lopez, one of the victims, told DPA.
...
Mayor Revilla is concerned about the
Callapa bridge collapse, because it is neighborhood access to the area of Irpavi, south of La Paz, where there are modern buildings.

The road Aloag-Santo Domingo connects the Capital Quito (Ecuador) with the Pacific coast. On January 30th it was reported the largest mudslide so far, because it covered 4 lanes with large rocks, up to 8 meters high.  This time it happened Monday night February 28, 2011, and today they will be clearing it, because the mountain is still falling and they cannot work at night.  Traffic is interrupted both ways. The mudslide included rocks, mud, and trees.

Paralyzed the Aloag-Santo Domingo
Sunday, January 30, 2011
Mother Nature again caused inconvenience to road users Aloag-Santo Domingo.

This time, the mountain hampered the four-lane highway, at kilometer 34, at which vehicular traffic was disrupted from 14:00 yesterday and is expected for traffic to be enabled  at noon today.

"Everything will depend on weather conditions occurring during the night (yesterday). We must also protect the integrity of the workers, "said one of the cleaners of the company Hidalgo, which is responsible for clearing this route.

In addition, the technician explained that the mudslide responds to continuous rainfall that occur in the area. "Aprroximately, there are some  7 thousand cubic meters which fell on the road," he said.

Bitter experience
While workers struggled to remove the huge rocks and mud funky in the shortest possible time, little was what could be done to enable interprovincial transit buses and private cars.

The passengers, who came from Quevedo, La Manna and Santo Domingo, had to venture to make one change, as drivers of the buses had to return to their starting points.

Even mothers with children in their arms in danger of being bypassed by the slippery rocks.

José Quinchiguano, passenger unit number 15, interprovincial transport cooperative Macuchi elevation climbed nearly 8 feet high that formed in the asphalt.

The pointy rocks hampered the ascent of man 60, who was drawn to the other side of the collapse. "I have to change trains, but I see that there is no bus to take us to Quito," he said.
