Just to share that in all my years searching for news in Venezuela, I never heard of the "palometa peluda" ( Hylesia metabus) whose habitat is usually swamps and mangrove and not cities.  This is an event limited to the Paria Peninsula in Sucre state. There is a fault under that area, where the mangrove and swamps are located; the fault  extends all the way to Trinidad, and is part of the Caribbean-South America plates, at a point where some sinking and some uplifting is expected.. I was wondering if I should ask Nancy about this, but anyway, I wanted to share the event, as it related to the effect the Caribbean Crunch maybe having on this area.

 

Just as a note, the news says the moth "lives in trees, poles and walls, as well as mangrove forests and crops."  However, the description of the natural habitat is mangrove forests and swamps and NOT "  trees, poles and walls, nor crops"

4 000 people have been treated for palometa
02/04/2011 5:28 a.m. Sanitation manager, Jose Gregorio Alvarado, said that strategic points are enabled to distribute antialérgicosCumaná .- About four thousand people from the Paria Peninsula have been treated at hospitals and clinics that region to receive medical treatment for the palometa hairy.

This was reported by Jose Gregorio Alvarado, manager of Environmental Health and Endemic Disease Control of FUNDASALUD, who noted that the figure corresponds to the last report received from the health centers of the affected populations.

Alvarado said they have enabled distribution points to deliver anti-allergic and skin lotions to alleviate the effects of metabus Hylesia species.

Alvarado recalled that the symptoms that occur when the dust of the thumb touches a hairy person is a slight itching and lesions on the skin (type hives). It is recommended not to scratch and not self-medicate.

He noted that already are prepared to undertake offensive operations on land and collection of the positions of the Hylesia metabus, which is usually installed in trees, poles and walls, as well as mangrove forests and crops.

"It will also work on eliminating the larvae, which is accomplished with soap and water preparations biolarvicides products."

Another measure to target the sleep cycle of the species are the information days in the affected communities so that residents learn to identify the positions and larvae, and can eliminate them.
They will receive instructions on how to complete the process.

Assigned million

Within days of completing the flight cycle of the thumb hairy and started the resting phase, the regional executive prepares the plan of attack for the position of the species, to avoid being played out of control.

Sucre state governor, Enrique Maestre, indicated that the offensive will be implemented in 13 municipalities affected Bs.F 9 million was allocated, of which Bs 6 million from the central level and 3 million government Bs.F regional.

Colombia, two quakes Sunday, one Caribbean in Cartagena (3.2) and another border with Ecuador in Nariñ0 Colombia that was a 3.9 (Pacific Nazca). Also three small shakes in the  border of Colombia with the appendage of Panama, but those were on the 2. something.  A train crash head on happened that evening in the area below the Colombian Cienaga, in Guamachito. Since the drivers of both trains burned, the explanation for what happened includes that the driver did not see the signal to stop. He cannot defend himself.

Trains collided in the Banana Zone: 4 dead
Two trains, one loaded with coal and other than just going to ship the ore, crashed in the banana region of Magdalena, leaving four people dead.

The incident occurred at 11:20 Sunday night on the stretch between Guamachito iron, Prado understanding of Seville and the Vuelta del Cura, mile 897.

Stricken locomotives were number 5106 - 5104 en route to La Mina, Cesar, Puerto de Santa Marta and the number 005, traveling in reverse.

Fishing boat sank: 1 and 4 survived drowned
The usual five fishermen slaughter ended in tragedy. As usual, Javier Donado Moscote, Santander De Avila, Carlos Padilla, Edgardo Molina and Gabriel Villa sailed on Saturday, at 3 pm, from Las Flores to deep water.

Its destination, on board of La Brenda, was the sector of El Torno. Area known in the Caribbean Sea near the La Cienaga Torno (Magdalena).

However, they came to know only yesterday morning when one called a family: it reported that it had sunk and five, Donado was dead.

Although none of the neighbors and relatives of the castaways wanted to talk, it was learned that the survivor was reported, said: "it was about 4 (am), and had collected the trammel net (network), when a wave hit the boat and turned around. "

How could the fisherman came ashore and, with residents around the swamp, rescued their comrades. By then, Donado, 45, was already dead.
