WALDORF, Md. — Firefighters from across Charles County battled a large brush fire Friday afternoon that spread through wooded areas near Billingsley Road after a transformer reportedly blew, igniting the surrounding woods.
Emergency personnel were dispatched at approximately 4:29 p.m. on March 13, 2026, to the 12200 block of Billingsley Road in Waldorf for a reported brush fire. Initial callers advised that a transformer had blown and that a large area of woods was already on fire.
Firefighters established a staging area at the nearby power plant on Thomas Edison Drive while crews worked to cut off the fire’s spread and protect nearby areas. Tanker and brush units operated throughout the evening, and forestry resources were requested to assist with containment.
Command reports indicated that heavy equipment and brush trucks were used to reach deeper sections of the woods as crews continued suppression operations. At one point, a fire department vehicle became stuck while operating in the rugged terrain but was later freed.
Crews remained on scene for several hours working to contain and extinguish hot spots before gradually returning to service later in the evening.
No injuries were reported. The full extent of the burned area has not been released. The incident remained under control as crews continued monitoring the scene.
