Cellular service goes down across US as millions are hit by outage

Verizon's communications network has suffered a major outage affecting wireless service throughout the US.

Mobile phone users from New York to Seattle have lost all cellular service, including the ability to make calls or send text messages.

According to outage-tracking website Down Detector, Verizon's service started experiencing widespread problems just before 12 noon ET on Wednesday.

Daily Mail's attempts to contact Verizon were not answered, and an automated message revealed that the company was dealing with 'an emergency condition.'

In a statement on their X account, Verizon Support wrote: 'We are aware of an issue impacting wireless voice and data services for some customers. Our engineers are engaged and are working to identify and solve the issue quickly. We understand how important reliable connectivity is and apologize for the inconvenience.'

Thousands of Verizon customers have reported that their smartphones are stuck in SOS mode, meaning they have no connection to Verizon's network and can only make emergency calls to 911, send emergency texts, or use satellite features if available on their device.

The outage has already caused many customers to panic as the disruptions have cut off vital lines of communication between them and loved ones.

'Lines are down... son who is home sick in York, Pa and on our plan is unreachable as well when I call from landline,' one Verizon user in Pennsylvania reported.

This is a breaking story. More details to follow.

According to Down Detector, the largest areas knocked offline by the nationwide outage in New York, Washington DC, Chicago, and Seattle.

'Phone just randomly went SOS, calls failing and slow service,' another person in Philadelphia said Wednesday afternoon.

However, customers on social media have reported that their service has also gone out in North Carolina, Texas, Georgia, Arizona, California, and Florida.

CLEVELAND, Ohio — The Cleveland PD said they were called to near west side Monday night due to an “electrical event,” which knocked out power for hundreds of Cleveland Public Power customers.

Firefighters were called to the area of 4200 block of Fenwick Ave just before 7 p.m. for a house fire. That’s when reports of a transformer explosion came in, as well as multiple downed power lines across the road.

Multiple roads were blocked off to traffic as crews responded to what fire officials called a “critical emergency.”

As of 8:30 p.m., the house fire was under control, but Cleveland firefighters confirmed there was a gas fire at the house. Enbridge reportedly shut off the gas for the entire street.

Fire companies at the scene had to go door to door to check electric meters for issues. Some of the electric meters were even blown off of houses, according to CDF.

FREDERICK, Maryland — A loud explosion was heard in downtown Frederick late Monday before widespread power outages swept through the area, prompting a major emergency response from police, fire crews, and utility workers.

According to a public safety alert issued by the Frederick PD, the incident involved an underground electrical fire near the intersection of South Market Street and East All Saints Street.

Emergency crews were dispatched shortly after reports of the explosion and loss of power.

Witnesses in the downtown area told MDBayNews they heard a sudden “boom” moments before lights went out across multiple blocks.

Some residents also reported seeing flames and smoke coming from the street, consistent with an underground electrical or manhole fire.

TUOLUMNE CO., California

Tens of thousands of residents were without power across Tuolumne Co dt an explosion near a power station, according to the sheriff's office. No injuries have been reported.

Just after 5 p.m. Friday, the PG&E outage map showed nearly 30,000 without power across the county, including 1,957 households in Sonora and 27,773 households in unincorporated areas.

By 7 p.m., power was restored for most customers in the area.

The sheriff's office later said crews determined the explosion was connected with a transformer at ENGIE, a facility neighboring Ultrapower.

In a news release, ENGIE said its Sierra Battery Storage facility experienced an electrical issue around 4 p.m. and some electrical circuits and equipment tripped at the facility. The company said there was no fire on-site.

ENGIE said its facility has been disconnected from the grid while technical experts are investigating the cause of the incident.

SEATTLE, Washington

An underground fire and more issues with the grid around Capitol Hill Station knocked out power to at least 450 customers around Broadway and John Friday night.

“Crews are responding to an energy response underway for a vault fire in the 100 block of Harvard Ave. E. Please avoid the area,” Seattle Fire reported about its “energy response” as the incident unfolded around 6:30 PM.

Friday night’s outage follows a disruption to electricity service in the same area Sun night.

A Seattle City Light spokesperson said that outage was due to “a piece of connection equipment that failed in the underground system” and likely not weather related.

Whitefish Mountain Resort evacuates skiers after lift breakdown

by MATT BALDWIN
Daily Inter Lake | January 9, 2026 3:00 PM

Skiers were evacuated from the Chair 1 Big Mountain Express lift at Whitefish Mountain Resort on Friday morning after a mechanical failure, according to resort officials.

The high-speed quad lift that accesses the summit of Big Mountain stopped at about 9:55 a.m. Lift mechanics were unable to fix the issue, and the backup system didn't function, prompting a full evacuation at about 11:30 a.m. All skiers were evacuated by 1:45 p.m.

Resort officials estimate about 150-200 people were on the lift when it stopped. The temperature at the summit was 15 degrees at noon, with a wind chill of 4 degrees.

During an evacuation, ski patrollers use ropes and a harness to lower people from the chair.

Hellroaring Basin and Flower Point were closed during the evacuation so all ski patrollers could assist.

"More than 40 employees — including patrollers, mountain ambassadors, ski instructors and staff from the terrain parks and events department — were directly involved in the evacuation process," a message posted the resort's snow report stated. "Four patrollers came in on their day off to assist."

Officials expected the lift to be running again soon.

"Our lift maintenance team has identified the issue and believes it will be quickly resolved once the evacuation is complete," resort spokesperson Chad Sokol told the Inter Lake.

People who were evacuated will receive free lift tickets for future use, Sokol said. Passholders involved were given tickets that can be used by friends or family.

"If any guest involved did not make it to the Base Lodge today, they can still call or visit in the coming days," Sokol said.

Chair 1 is 2,084 feet long and takes skiers from the base area to the summit in about 8 minutes. The current lift was installed in 2007, replacing the former Glacier Chaser lift that is now Chair 2, according to resort information.

MIDDLETON, Massachusetts

Hundreds of inmates at the Middleton House of Correction were evacuated to other buildings after a transformer exploded at the facility on Tuesday, officials said.

The transformer exploded outside an inmate housing unit at about 6:30 p.m. and “resulted in the evacuation of 407 inmates to other buildings within the secure perimeter,” the Essex County Sheriff’s Department said in a statement.

“The evacuation was orderly and secure, and there were no injuries,” officials said.

The explosion caused a fire that was extinguished. The housing unit “remains offline as firefighter crews and personnel from Middleton Electric assess the damage,” officials said.

The sheriff’s department brought in additional personnel to maintain security at the facility, and public visits were canceled for Wednesday, officials said.
