Homes have been inundated and cars sank into the road after a water main burst in Melbourne's inner city.

Residents were woken by a flood of water early on Tuesday morning as water surged through a residential street in Port Melbourne.

Up to 50 homes on Liardet Street were initially threatened by the flood, as pressurised water sprayed from the burst 375-millimetre (15-inch) pipe.

The flood created a sinkhole on the street and three cars were engulfed in the asphalt.

3AW caller Vanessa Proctor said the flooding was substantial.

"My cat was swimming in the backyard," she said.

Another woman told 3AW she thought it was a tsunami, given the street's proximity to the bay.

State Emergency Service volunteers sandbagged properties and removed furniture from homes.

Ultimately, three homes were damaged by ankle-deep water and three cars were damaged.

Water mains in Reseda and Koreatown erupted 4 minutes apart on Saturday, according to the LA Department of Water and Power.

In Koreatown, cars splashed through a river of water gushing from a break on 5th Street, between Ardmore and Normandie avenues, a DWP spokesman said. An 8-inch cast-iron pipe was reported broken at 5:11 a.m.

The Reseda/Tarzana break occurred at 5:15 a.m., at 5203 Calvin Avenue.

Israel has been hit by its worst ever environmental crisis as millions of litres of crude oil gushed out of a pipeline to flood 200 acres of a desert nature reserve, officials said.

More than 80 people have been taken to hospital with breathing difficulties after the oil spill which happened during maintenance work on the Eilat-Ashkelon pipeline, north of the Red Sea resort of Eilat, on Wednesday night.

Officials say rehabilitation of the area could take months, even years, as the spill stretched to 'a couple of kilometers long' and reached the Evrona nature reserve, close to the Jordan border.

A preliminary investigation indicated that the pipeline burst after a new section was struck accidentally during maintenance work, according to The Times of Israel.

Ruptured Water Main Closes City Heights Streets in San Diego (Nov 30)

A broken water main left several City Heights blocks without water Sunday, a city official said.

A 16-inch, cast iron pipe broke and sent water gushing from the street at 54th Place near Orange Avenue about 10:15 a.m., said public utilities spokesman Arian Collins.

Residents and businesses in an area bordered by El Cajon Boulevard, Orange Avenue and 56th Street had no water while crews worked to fix the main.

Four water wagons were parked in the area to provide people with fresh water, Collins said.

Gigantic water leak causes street to collapse near Primrose Hill

Residents were left wading through a torrent of water over the weekend after a huge water pipe burst, flooding the street and causing the road to collapse.

Homeowners along Wells Rise, next to Primrose Hill, awoke to a small river flowing past their front doors on Sunday morning, with some residents left frantically sweeping water away from their drives to stop homes being flooded.

The chaotic scenes, caused by a ruptured pipe 36ins in diameter, left about 600 homes with low water pressure or no water at all.

Parts of the road collapsed due to the leak and left a gaping hole in the street while workmen carried out urgent repairs.

Thames Water is still working to fix the pipe and the cause of the leak is not yet known.

Water Main Break Causes Flood in San Anselmo, California (Nov 13)

Residents in San Anselmo are used to floods, just not as accustomed to those caused by broken water pipes.

"Saw water on both sides of the street and getting high fast," said Karl Christoffersen, who works at Seawood Photo on Tunstead Avenue. He showed KTVU his home video that he took as fountains of water spewed from the pavement near the store.

"It looked like the street had been lifted up maybe a foot almost," Christoffersen said, "And then we saw the water kind of shooting up out of the cracks in the street."
