Power cut in India leaves 370 million without power (Day 2: now 600 million without power)

Northern India's power grid crashed Monday, halting hundreds of trains, forcing hospitals and airports to use backup generators and leaving 370 million people -- more than the population of the United States and Canada combined -- sweltering in the summer heat.

The blackout, one of the worst to hit India in a decade, highlighted the nation's inability to feed a growing hunger for energy as it strives to become a regional economic power.

The northern grid crashed about 2:30 a.m. because it could no longer keep up with the huge demand for power in the hot summer, officials in the state of Uttar Pradesh said. However, Power Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde said he was not sure exactly what caused the collapse and had formed a committee to investigate it.

Kenya hit by national blackout after power grid failure

NAIROBI | Tue May 28, 2013 9:50am EDT

(Reuters) - Kenya's power grid failed on Tuesday, plunging east Africa's biggest economy into a nationwide power blackout, sole power distributor Kenya Power said.

Kenya Power supplies 1,250 megawatts of power to over 2 million customers connected on the national grid, against a demand of 1,700 megawatts, with most of the fuel generated from hydro power stations run by KenGen.

The company said two transmission lines failed carrying 400 megawatts (MW) of electricity from a geothermal power source in the Rift Valley, where KenGen is tapping vast reserves of steam energy in a geologically active region.

This set up a ripple effect, knocking out the national interconnected grid and generating system - which relies on hydro-power for the lion's share of its electricity - leading to a national power outage, the company said.

Businesses in the country of 40 million people often rely on diesel generators to make up the gap between power demand and output and cite frequent localized power blackouts as one of the key barriers to economic growth.

Growth is forecast to grow 6 percent this year from 4.6 percent last year and 4.4 percent in 2011.

Kenya Power said it was trying to re-start the grid "to restore power as quickly as possible", and investigate why the two transmission lines failed.

"The blackout, one of the worst to hit India in a decade, highlighted the nation's inability to feed a growing hunger for energy as it strives to become a regional economic power."

The term "worst in decade or worst in 60 years," creates distrust because we don't even know, happened like this, 60 years ago, like the situation with floods in Thailand 2011. And of course it is not shown on the news!

* Explosions hit Auckland rail bridge - Stuff

Last updated 10:27 01/08/2012

At least four large explosions, including one close to two firemen, rocked an industrial area of South Auckland this morning, closing the train line and causing widespread panic.

"We were quite lucky to be honest because I was bending down inspecting the hole (caused by an initial explosion) and as you can imagine we got out of there pretty quickly," Manurewa firefighter Karne Gough said.

Gough was inspecting the Weymouth Rd rail overbridge along with Manurewa station officer Jeremy Hull when the blast came from under the footpath of the bridge.

Hull said there were "multiple explosions" after firefighters arrived at the scene.

Flames were first seen coming from the road way on the Weymouth Rd rail overbridge about 7.45am, eyewitness Chris Allatt said.

"I saw them and then soon after there were four explosions... a couple of them were quite impressive and loud."

He said one of the fireballs seemed to come close to two firemen on the bridge.

The Fire Service earlier said they had received multiple 111 calls "about a fire on the overbridge, the footpath on fire, a fireball" spokesman Jaron Phillps said.

The incident was initially thought to be gas explosions but Phillps said firefighters believed it was overhead wires catching alight.

No-one had been injured.

Phillips said the Southmall carpark was evacuated and Weymouth Rd and Great South Rd awere closed.

Trains were suspended between Papakura and Puhinui until about 9.20am.

A Vector spokeswoman said the incident was caused by a cable fault on the overbridge.

By 9.20am the feeder outage had been restored and repairs were being carried out.

Allatt's business, Manurewa Automotive, was close to the bridge.

He said there were four or five fire engines, a hazardous materials unit and numerous police.

He said he was not sure whether the emergency was under control as the bridge was still closed and firemen still working.

Mandeep Singh, manager of McDonald's in Manurewa, said the explosion sounded like a succession of bangs.

"There was a big blast and then we heard blasts four or five times after that," he said.

"The power went off after the first blast and then continued to flicker in and out. There may have been gaps of between 10 and 15 minutes between the various blasts we heard."

Trains have been suspended between Papakura and Puhinui.

Pakistan blackout protests turn violent

Tue Jul 31, 2012 6:40AM GMT

Prolonged and widespread power outage in most of Pakistan’s cities during scorching summer heat has triggered violent protests in most areas of the country.

Coupled with hot and humid summer weather, the prolonged blackout has forced outraged citizens to take to the streets to protest the tough living conditions.

The protests turned violent as some of the angry protesters reportedly attacked offices of the power supply department in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, damaging official and private properties.

Offices of Pepco, the Pakistan Electric Power Company, were also attacked in Islamabad, Abbottabad, Charsadda, Okara, Multan, Mandi Bahauddin, Sialkot, and Sheikhupura and many of them were reportedly set ablaze.

No loss of life was reported, but the roads were blocked till late night.

Reports indicate that in some areas people face 12 to 14 hours of rolling blackouts, while the rural residents suffer up to 18 hours of power outage.

Power grid fails again; blackout blankets half of India

Jul 31 2012, 13:54 hrs

The eastern and northeastern regional grids collapsed today resulting in an unprecedented situation with power snapped in the states of West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, Assam and Sikkim.

This is probably the first time that three grids have collapsed simultaneously,

When asked about the reasons for the failure of grids, Shinde said some states are drawing electricity over and above their limits. "This was creating problems," the minister said.

The crisis was the second record-breaking outage in two days. India's northern grid failed Monday, leaving 370 million people powerless for much of the day, in a collapse blamed on states that drew more than their allotment of power.

At 1:05 p.m. Tuesday, the northern grid collapsed again, energy officials said. This time, it took the eastern grid and the northeastern grid with it. In all, 20 of India's 28 states -- with double the population of the United States -- were hit in a region stretching from the border with Myanmar in the northeast to the Pakistani border about 3,000 kilometers (1,870 miles) away.

Hundreds of trains stalled across the country and traffic lights went out, causing widespread jams in New Delhi. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee asked office workers to go home and rushed generators to coal mines to rescue trapped miners.
