Amazon Web Services recovered Monday morning from a widespread outage that disrupted services for major retailers, airlines, social media apps, financial platforms, and more. AWS infrastructure supports millions of websites and platforms.Air France 447 in 2009, Malaysia Airlines Flight 370, and the recent Germanwings A320 incidents have drawn attention due to their significant impact on the airline industry, often attributing blame to pilot suicide, storms, or poor judgment. Similarly, crashes involving electric trains like the Disney Monorail, DC Metro in 2009, and Amtrak 188 are investigated with discussions of safety devices, track maintenance, or mechanical failure taking center stage.

The public only begins to suspect something larger at play when widespread issues arise. Disruptions in cell phone service are often blamed on blocked tower access or bad weather, while the Blackberry outage in 2008 was attributed to a software glitch. However, engineers maintaining equipment and the grid are not easily deceived. During the Washington DC blackout, an electrical issue initially described as a "surge" hinted at something unusual.

A key distinction exists between a failed electrical system, a simple outage, and an electromagnetic pulse. A pulse causes a surge—a sudden increase in magnetons and electrons—that disrupts equipment reliant on steady particle flow, leading to a runaway state. Surge protection can guard against lightning strikes, shutting down equipment to prevent damage. Yet, absent a lightning strike, such surges may point to the charged tail of Planet X, also known as Nibiru.

What lies ahead for the public? As cell phone service and satellite cable TV continue to degrade, and as planes experience increasing electronics failures or cockpit smoke incidents, the challenges posed by such phenomena may become harder to ignore.

Allegiant flight makes emergency landing in California after smoke fills cabin

 http://www.tbo.com/news/business/airlines/allegiant-flight-makes-em...

FRESNO, Calif. — Smoke filled the cabin of an Allegiant Air jet after it landed at a California airport on Monday (Sept 25), forcing coughing passengers to cover their faces with shirts and firefighters to board the plane, authorities said.

None of the 150 passengers or six crew members was injured when the plane from Las Vegas landed at Fresno International Airport, Allegiant Air said.

As the plane was taxiing in Fresno, it came to an abrupt stop and smoke started to fill the cabin from the front of the aircraft, said passenger Estevan Moreno, 34, a Fresno police officer.

"We used our shirts to mask our faces from the smoke," he said. "I was coughing pretty good from it."

At one point, the flight crew said they would pass out wet napkins to help passengers cover their mouths, Moreno said, but that didn't happen..."

Chaos as ALL flights at Sydney Airport are grounded due to power outage on the first day of school holidays

Thousands of people have been left stranded at Sydney Airport after a huge power outage on the first day of school holidays grounded all flights.

Systems went down just after 5am and resulted in radar failures at air traffic control, preventing all flights from leaving the domestic and international airports.

By mid-morning, queues stretched out the front doors of all terminals at the major airport as airline staff battled to contend with cancelled flights.

It's understood air traffic control has had to revert to a manual process for departing flights, and is now allowing just 15 planes in and out of the airport every hour.

Brisbane, Melbourne and Adelaide airport are reporting huge delays as well as they deal with the backlog of flights unable to touch down at Sydney.

It's understood air traffic control has had to revert to a manual process for departing flights

The chaos comes as thousands of families prepare to head away on vacation for the school holidays, which began for many on Monday.

The technical glitch was resolved by 9am with the domestic airport 'progressively returning to normal operations,' a spokeswoman for Sydney Airport said.

'The issue has been addressed but the airport is not at normal capacity. We are working hard to clear the backlog of flights,' she said.

Delays are also being felt on the roads, with traffic backing up for kilometres at Mascot and surrounding suburbs.

Mount Isa mine substation ablaze

 http://www.couriermail.com.au/news/queensland/mount-isa-mine-substa...

A FIRE caused by the explosion of two transformers at Mount Isa Mines (Sept 18) has been extinguished.

A spokeswoman for Glencore, who runs the mine, said the fire was out and the area secured.

“We are currently in the process of responding to this afternoon’s incident,” she said.

It is understood more information will be made available tomorrow.

Two transformers went up in flames at the Mount Isa Mines site on Railway Ave just after 3pm on Monday.

Early investigations suggest there was a fault with the high-voltage power substation.

Police set up an exclusion zone and the area was evacuated. Trains to and from the mine were also suspended.

Residents living near to the exclusion zone were also warned not to touch metal objects, including streets signs and fences, due to concerns about electrocution..."

Power Failure in Brooklyn Shuts Down Subways

 https://www.nytimes.com/2017/09/17/nyregion/subway-failure-jay-st-m...

Subway service between Brooklyn and downtown Manhattan ground to a halt on Sunday (Sept 17) after a transformer near Jay Street briefly failed, according to the power company.

The temporary power fluctuation, which began around 1 p.m., scrambled train signals and disrupted service on the A, C, E, F and G lines. The shutdown had a ripple effect up several subway lines, resulting in packed platforms and delayed trains from Brooklyn all the way into Upper Manhattan and even the Bronx.

“Complete chaos at 145th Street due to an outage in Brooklyn?” a rider named Micah Bergdale posted on Twitter with a picture of a packed platform at 145th Street. “This is nuts. People rely on subway for their weekend jobs too.”

For residents of the affected area lights may have dimmed, but the trains were more profoundly affected because a failed transformer can shut down the subway’s signals, said Michael Clendenin, a spokesman for Consolidated Edison, the power company.

By 3 p.m. the issue had been resolved, though officials had not yet determined exactly what caused power failure.

On Thursday, debris, a switch problem and a power malfunction caused subway delays in Brooklyn, Manhattan and Queens during the morning rush.

LA street is destroyed after underground electrical vault explodes, sending sheets of concrete, 7-inch-thick asphalt chunks and manhole covers into the air

 http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-4862426/LA-shaken-undergrou...

  • The explosion happened when a 138,000-volt transmission line failed
  • That's enough voltage to power 1,000 houses - or destroy a street
  • Explosion went off in the Hyde Park area of South LA at 3pm Wednesday
  • No-one was injured, but the asphalt was torn up and cars smashed with debris
  • It's unclear as of yet exactly what caused the transmission line failure
  • Electricity vaults are concrete access areas for workers beneath streets
  • Such explosions are uncommon, police said

A South LA street was ruined on Wednesday afternoon (Sept 6) when an electrical vault exploded beneath it.

The vault - which carries enough electricity to power a thousand homes, according to experts - detonated

at around 3:30pm, creating a 'big boom like a car exploded,' as one witness told NBC Los Angeles.

The explosion was powerful enough to rip up concrete sheets, scatter seven-inch-thick chunks of asphalt and

toss manhole covers weighing 250lbs into the air..."
