Amazon Web Services recovered Monday morning from a widespread outage that disrupted services for major retailers, airlines, social media apps, financial platforms, and more. AWS infrastructure supports millions of websites and platforms.Air France 447 in 2009, Malaysia Airlines Flight 370, and the recent Germanwings A320 incidents have drawn attention due to their significant impact on the airline industry, often attributing blame to pilot suicide, storms, or poor judgment. Similarly, crashes involving electric trains like the Disney Monorail, DC Metro in 2009, and Amtrak 188 are investigated with discussions of safety devices, track maintenance, or mechanical failure taking center stage.

The public only begins to suspect something larger at play when widespread issues arise. Disruptions in cell phone service are often blamed on blocked tower access or bad weather, while the Blackberry outage in 2008 was attributed to a software glitch. However, engineers maintaining equipment and the grid are not easily deceived. During the Washington DC blackout, an electrical issue initially described as a "surge" hinted at something unusual.

A key distinction exists between a failed electrical system, a simple outage, and an electromagnetic pulse. A pulse causes a surge—a sudden increase in magnetons and electrons—that disrupts equipment reliant on steady particle flow, leading to a runaway state. Surge protection can guard against lightning strikes, shutting down equipment to prevent damage. Yet, absent a lightning strike, such surges may point to the charged tail of Planet X, also known as Nibiru.

What lies ahead for the public? As cell phone service and satellite cable TV continue to degrade, and as planes experience increasing electronics failures or cockpit smoke incidents, the challenges posed by such phenomena may become harder to ignore.

MANASSAS, Virginia

Nearly 3,800 Manassas residents & businesses lost power Sun night, the third major outage in just over a week.

As of 9:50 p.m., the city reported 3,731 customers without power, concentrated in downtown & surrounding neighborhoods.

Sunday’s blackout is the third outage in 9 days to hit Manassas.

On Oct 16, a blown manhole near Church & West St caused a short circuit on the city’s internal distribution system.

That incident cut power to parts of downtown for about 2.5 hrs before most service was restored by 3:23 a.m.

Just 5 days earlier, on Oct 11, a Dominion Energy transmission failure knocked out 2 of the city’s main substations — Battery Heights & Prince William — leaving roughly 6,000 customers without power.

A total power outage blackout hit nine Brazilian states at dawn today. The early hours of Tuesday, October 14, were marked by a blackout that left several regions of the country in the dark. The interruption in the energy supply affected the Federal District & 9 states: São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Pernambuco, Bahia, Amazonas, Minas Gerais, Santa Catarina, Goiás & Rio Grande do Norte.

The problem that caused the blackout occurred in Paraná, in a Copel substation in Campo Largo that caught fire.

Later, it was reported that the fire in the reactor caused a blackout through Brazil. The exact cause of the fire that caused the blackout has not yet been identified by the authorities. Investigations are underway to determine the origin of the flames and evaluate possible failures in the protection system.

A significant power outage in southeast Berlin is suspected to be caused by a politically motivated arson attack by extremists. The police noted the choice of two power masts as targets and the methods used by the perpetrators as indicators. Currently, it is unclear which political group was involved.

About 43,000 households and 3,000 businesses are affected, and emergency firefighters assisted two nursing homes, relocating patients to hospitals.

The traffic situation has been challenging with traffic lights out, and the police are managing intersections. Authorities warn of possible disruptions to mobile networks and advise using local police stations for emergencies.

A streetcar caught fire on the move with passengers inside in Kazan, Russia. No casualties but quite a scare.

Three days ago, the Lisbon funicular lost control, derailed and crashed, the death toll rose to 17 after the city's famous Elevador da Glória tram derailed and crashed into a building on Wednesday evening, authorities said today.

What's going on? Coincidence? Or is there something happening we are not supposed to know about?

United Airlines flights grounded nationwide because of computer problems

United Airlines is having major operational difficulties with a computer system that helps determine the weight and balance of a departing aircraft. The airline is preventing all of its departures from taking off. Flights already in the air are not affected by the computer problems.

WASHINGTON — Hundreds of United Airlines flights were disrupted on Wednesday evening as the carrier grappled with a major computer system outage.

The "technology disruption" forced United to hold hundreds of flights at their departure airports for several hours.

At the carrier's request, the Federal Aviation Administration issued ground stops for all of its United flights at the airline's major hubs including Chicago, Houston, Denver, Newark, N.J. and San Francisco. That did not include flights on the company's smaller regional jets.

Some jets that were preparing for takeoff and had been waiting for the problems to resolve eventually returned to their gates for passengers to deplane. United flights that were already in the air were not affected by the technology issue.

The incident was not related to recent concerns about cybersecurity in the airline industry, United said. The impacted computer system housed information about each flight and fed it to other computer systems, according to United, including those that calculate weight and balance and track flight times.

United is just the latest major carrier to suffer a systemwide computer meltdown.

In 2022, Southwest Airlines fell apart during the busy Christmas holiday travel period. A major winter storm caused travel disruptions across the U.S., forcing airlines to cancel thousands of flights. While most recovered relatively quickly, Southwest did not. The airline ultimately canceled 16,900 flights, stranding more than 2 million passengers.

EXPLOSION AND FIRE AT NEW JERSEY PATH TRAIN STATION

JERSEY CITY, New Jersey

A fire broke out under a PATH commuter train on Monday morning in Jersey City, N.J., sending passengers to the hospital and causing panic during rush hour as people raced to escape flames and smoke.

The fire began shortly after 6 a.m. at the Newport PATH station in Jersey City. The fire ignited below one of the train cars, Port Authority officials said. They are investigating the cause of the flames.

13 people were treated for smoke inhalation at the scene, officials said. 9 of them were hospitalized for further evaluation.

Passengers shared their accounts of the fire online, with one person reporting hearing a “loud explosion” right before it broke out.

“This was not just smoke,” said another, adding that the car “was literally in flames.”
