A Brazilian prison complex is facing collapse after inmates dug a labyrinth of tunnels beneath its foundations during multiple escape bids.
Four more tunnels were discovered this week alone after a group of prisoners escaped from Alcaguz jail in Maceio in the north east of the country.
Inmates at the prison are said to spend every moment of the day plotting their escape and have so far excavated tunnels three metres underground and 30 metres long.
Fresh discovery: A prison guard looks at the hole leading to a network of tunnels beneath the Alcaguz jail in Brazil
There are now so many tunnels in the soft earth under the penitentiary that the structure is unsound.
The prison's security chief says that the structural problems are so severe 'it could bring the prison down at any moment.'
Contractors building a new wing at the jail last year discovered new tunnels and saw the ground collapse as they drove heavy equipment across the compound.
Prison governor Jose Olimpio said: 'There are many. The prisoners spend every moment of the day dreaming up ways to escape. And they alwaysfind some way of hiding the soil, under mattresses, or down the toilet which ends up blocking the whole sewarage system.
'They even started digging a tunnel in the prison yard, but we discovered it before anyone had escaped.

ownward, triggering a water main break and destabilizing the road to the homes.
And for residents it is not clear when they’ll be able to return.
Prince George’s County government officials said the road collapse occurred on Piscataway Drive in Fort Washington. Geo-technical engineers called it a “slope failure,” a sort of lower-grade landslide.
The strip of land that is collapsing is about 1,500 feet long, said Darrell Mobley, director of the county’s Department of Public Works and Transportation. Trees up to 200 feet tall are falling, taking power lines with them.
Now officials are rushing to assess the situation and devise a plan for restoring the area’s structural integrity.
“It will take at least two weeks timeframe for them to determine an appropriate short term solution to the problem,” Mobley said. “It’s too early to determine” when residents can return.
A dramatic crack has split the middle of a street in the neighborhood, made up of large, single-family, custom-made houses.
Officials said they saw Piscataway Drive, a dead-end street that cascades downhill to the Potomac River tributary Piscataway Creek, start to crack over the weekend. County and Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission workers went to the area three times to repair the break but eventually told residents Sunday the situation had deteriorated, said Aubrey Thagard, assistant deputy chief administrative officer for the county’s office of economic development and public infrastructure.
Prince George’s officials are hoping to have more information on Tuesday about the sloping, but they said they think the significant rainfall last week may have caused the soil to shift.
But some frustrated residents said the sloping land is not a new problem.
“We have had smaller mudslides for the last 10 years,” said homeowner Dawn Taylor. “The county has come and patched-job the cracks in our slopes but they have not fixed it.”
Resident Sue Howland arrived on the scene and burst into tears. Her husband is an amputee who can’t get around on his own, and she takes care of 20 cats.
“This is our dream house and I didn’t know if we’re facing never seeing it again,” said Howland, who, overcome with emotion, fell into a county employee’s arms.
Officials were working to help her husband out of the home and find shelter for the couple as well as their pets.
An information center has been set up at Harmony Hall Regional Center on Livingston Road. County officials will work with the American Red Cross to shelter displaced homeowners, though many said they would be staying with friends or family. Family services also will be providing meals at Harmony Hall to those forced to evacuate.
At least one resident didn’t understand why county officials were forcing people out.
“I don’t want to leave, the county is being unreasonable,” said John Schnizlein, waving his orange mandatory evacuation notice that had been taped onto his front door.
Schnizlein, a 19-year resident of the neighborhood, said the water main has broken several times before and he, along with several neighbors, is determined to stay.
“Our goal is to get you back as soon as we can, safely,” Gary Cunningham, of the county’s Department of Permitting, Inspections and Enforcement, told Schnizlein.
But Schnizlein was determined to stay. He said if he needed water for the bathroom he would get it from the nearby creek.

olice departments look over a large sinkhole that opened Monday on East Cleveland Street between Foote and Burlington avenues. City officials say it could take months to repair.
LAFAYETTE — It could take months for crews to repair a sinkhole that opened above an old mine shaft on East Cleveland Street early Monday morning, nearly swallowing a SUV whole.
The sinkhole opened in the pre-dawn hours on East Cleveland between between Foote and Burlington avenues, above what used to be the main shaft of the Simpson coal mine — leaving a 15-foot-deep hole filled with water and debris in the middle of the street.
A car and its driver were perilously close to also ending up at the bottom of the sinkhole. The man told police he was driving through what he thought was a pothole at 5 a.m. Monday when he felt the asphalt suddenly "collapse around him," according to Debbie Wilmot, a spokeswoman with the city of Lafayette.

Police responded to the scene and stabilized the vehicle long enough for the driver to get out without any injury. The SUV was then towed from its precarious perch.
Don Kinney lives just yards from the hole and said he was awakened by a loud "thump."
"I came out to look at it and thought I was dreaming," Kinney said of the gaping hole in the street. "I've lived here 30 years and it's the first time I've seen this."
Wilmot said the sinkhole opened up over the main shaft of the old Simpson mine, which was shut down 88 years ago. She said the shaft had been filled in, but it appears recent rains had caused the fill to erode away.
"The combination of weather and conditions were just right for it to happen at this point," Wilmot said. "It was not any one overarching event that caused it."
Crews said no gas or water lines were damaged when the sinkhole opened.

yarn and making cloth and knitting and crocheting for years. I have my sheep and goats and chickens and a huge garden and started learning to seed save a few years ago. I've made many batches of soap, make several kinds of cheese, learned how to store food, learned to brain tan hides, learned to build, searched out ways to make shelters without the use of nails or screws, how to use & make herbal remedys, how to forage, first aid & emergency medicine, how to find water, how to distill water, how to douse, found a shortwave radio and books on how to use it, how to fish, smoke meat and so much more.
I've been following ZT since the GLP days before the Ning, and everything has unfolded in due time as they predicted. I am not sure we will be ready or even make it thru the PS, but since I live in a hilly area there are plenty of places to lay low when the hour of the shift occurs and the winds howl. I've finally convinced my DH that this is happening and we are continuing to learn more about how to do for ourselves. Our plan is to buy some containers, place in a hill side and cover with dirt then fill them with supplies and tools. then when the time comes fell some trees in the gully behind the house, cover them with tarps and dirt and take as many animals as we can and secur them under the logs, then secur ourselves.
Our family isn't on board yet but we still hope the children will come around in time and have included plans for many people to join us, hoping the in-laws will come too. We even got an Alaskan sawmill in case there are any trees worth saving and turning into usable lumber...we are learning about wood gas now.
I am thankful that running the farm keeps me very busy so I don't have too much time to dwell on what might be and can instead concentrate on the tasks at hand. We have reached out to extended family and neighbors and think we just might be in a good area for community to come together and help each other, so maybe moving isn't necessary – though if we had the money we would move to a safer location; but it doesn't seem to be possible right now as we are living like everyone else is from paycheck to paycheck. We make do, search for tools at garage sales, and learn everything we can about how to survive well.
I used to dream of running a fiber arts school, in my mind I still see a large building with lots of tools to help make things out of fiber and wool, with fields of sheep and goats, huge gardens of food and flowers and herbs, a wood shop and a huge barn with lots of hay put up for winter, a cheese cave and root cellars, and lots of people coming and going- perhaps it will be a reality after the shift and I can help teach everyone how to do these things and keep the knowledge alive.
And then perhaps I won't make it - I keep remembering something someone said once about surviving - the holocaust saw many survivors, but who would want to live with those psychological scars & memories? To merely survive isn't always a good thing - as ZT points out many will be insane as they won't be able to adjust to the changes. I'm not sure I want to just merely survive, and I don't want to survive alone, I would rather take my chances with my family than move out into nowhere and have no one. I'm a social creature and need community.
How am I doing? As several have mentioned - some days are better than others. Some days I think why bother with all this as it won't survive anyway, I should just get a back pack and a sturdy pair of boots, a hatchet and knife with some flint and some fish hooks and hope for the best but expect the worst.
Then I have days like today - I'm OK today and tomorrow will take care of itself. Through all of this I am amazed at the awesome power of nature, whether it's a baby goat being born or a rip in the earth 5 miles long - this is an amazing time to be alive!…
t of their rooms as one three-story building collapsed and another slowly sank.
Guests at the Summer Bay Resort in Clermont, about 10 minutes from Walt Disney World, called for help before the collapse, saying they heard loud noises and windows cracking. All guests inside the buildings -- an estimated 35 people, authorities said -- were evacuated before the first structure crumbled.
A deep crater swallowed much of one building, Lake County Fire Rescue Battalion Chief Tony Cuellar said. Aerial video from CNN affiliate WFTV showed one end of the building -- which had held two-bedroom, two-bathroom villas -- still standing, but the rest reduced to pile of debris.
The evacuation started after 10:30 p.m., when a guest told a security guard about a "window blowing out," resort president Paul Caldwell told reporters Monday morning.
After another window broke in the guard's presence, one of the buildings began visibly sinking about 11 p.m., Caldwell said. No injuries were reported.
A couple and their infant escaped through a window because a door frame collapsed, witness Maggie Ghamry told WFTV.
"One person had to break out of a window because the door frame collapsed. He, his wife and an infant, he had to break the window so they could escape. There were windows breaking everywhere. One woman was sitting in the tub and the tub levitated and that's when she just grabbed a pair of shorts and came out with nothing. So, it was the most surreal experience I never could have imagined in my wildest dreams," said witness Maggie Ghamry.
That woman wasn't the only one to leave belongings behind. Other guests left keys and bags in their rooms, and it wasn't clear Monday morning whether guests would be able to get items back from parts of the collapsed building, Caldwell said.

nning out of time as they scramble to control the country’s worst plague of locusts in more than half a century, officials warned on Monday.
The provincial authorities and Senasa, the government’s agricultural inspection agency, have intensified their efforts to exterminate swarms of the insects in the dry forests of northern Argentina. But their attempts might not be enough to prevent the locusts from developing into a flying throng in the coming days — when they will then threaten to devour crops like sunflowers and cotton, and grasslands for cattle grazing.
“It’s the worst explosion in the last 60 years,” Diego Quiroga, the agriculture agency’s chief of vegetative protection, said in a telephone interview. “It’s impossible to eradicate; the plague has already established itself. We’re just acting to make sure it’s the smallest it can be and does the least damage possible.”
Small pockets of locusts, which first appeared last June, at the start of winter in the Southern Hemisphere, have spread across an area of northern Argentina about the size of Delaware. The mild and rainy winter here created comfortable breeding conditions for the locusts; their surge outpaced the ability of the authorities to control the spread of the insects.
Farmers last year reported locust clouds that were more than four miles long and nearly two miles high, said Juan Pablo Karnatz, a representative for the Province of Santiago del Estero at the Rural Confederations of Argentina, which represents more than 100,000 farmers here.
In the past five years, Senasa, the agricultural agency, has seen an increase in the numbers of insects that can destroy crops — like fruit flies that threaten citrus groves — as a result of warmer, wetter winters.

Locust Plagues Wreak Havoc on Queensland Farms (Jan 27)
Plagues of locusts are causing nightmares for northwest Queensland graziers just weeks after their dreams of much-needed rain were realised.
The large plagues have emerged around Charters Towers, wiping out grass shoots that began to sprout after late December rain.
Charters Towers Mayor Frank Beveridge said the problem was particularly bad in some areas west of the township.
"You can be driving along and then hit a huge plague of them and be left with dead insects all over your car," he told AAP.
"It can be quite devastating if you are a grazier and have waited 12 months for rain ... and then the grass disappears."
Videos highlighting the extent of the problem have emerged on Facebook.
Grazier Patrick Scharf posted a video showing a huge swarm of the locusts hopping over a patch of land.
"This is what we have to put up with now. As a small green pick comes up these little mungral's (sic) just chew it off," he wrote.
Mr Scharf said he had been spraying the locusts since mid-January and help was needed from government departments.
Cr Beveridge said the climatic conditions had to be just right for the locusts to thrive and it was hard to predict how long the problem would last.
"If the conditions extend then they might cycle a number of times, which means they are a problem for a lot longer," he said.

omebody's going to die,' says Sechelt District spokeswoman Julie Rogers.Fourteen homes in a Sechelt neighbourhood plagued by sinkholes have been placed on evacuation alert by the district.
A new engineering study received by the District of Sechelt this week concluded homes in the Seawatch neighbourhood near a massive new sinkhole are not safe to occupy.
Geotechnical instability has resulted in multiple sinkholes in the area of North Gale Avenue and Seawatch Lane, with “the potential of danger to life and health,” the warning reads.
Residents have been told to get packed and be ready to go.
“The (engineers) basically said that somebody’s going to die,” said district spokeswoman Julie Rogers.
A 25-metre deep sinkhole opened up without warning on or around Boxing Day that was “big enough to swallow a car.” After a drilling investigation, Thurber Engineering recommended that the district should not allow occupancy of the residences in the area.
“… [T]he sinkhole hazard is increasing with time and is not confined to locations where sinkholes have occurred previously,” the Thurber report reads. “There is a very high probability of at least one sinkhole collapse each year based on the recent history of the site.”
Residents said they were told Thursday evening that an order to evacuate could come as early as Friday afternoon.
Once that order is enacted, residents who leave their homes will not be allowed to return to their homes until the order is lifted, said homeowner Rod Goy.
Neighbours are concerned that once they leave, they may never be allowed to return to their homes, he said.
“We are sitting on pins and needles right now waiting for the other shoe to drop,” said Goy.
Much of the Seawatch area has been closed to vehicle traffic for months because of the subsidence of the roadbeds, leaving homeowners to walk to their homes past large concrete barriers.
The instability of the area has left homeowners with houses that cannot be sold and that could soon be uninhabitable.
One home has already been condemned after a sinkhole opened up under the foundation of the home, leaving the Storey family paying a mortgage on a home they aren’t allowed to enter.
“We moved here to live in our dream home and now we can’t even go inside,” said Ross Storey. “We are still paying a $450,000 mortgage and property taxes.”
Rod and Donna Goy’s home is not damaged, but they are surrounded by craters, failing roads and broken sewers.
Storey’s efforts to seek compensation have so far failed.
After mediation failed, the Storeys filed suit against the District of Sechelt, the developer Concordia Seawatch, 14 engineering firms, home insurer Travelers Guarantee and five real estate agents, among others.
Greg and Gerry Latham’s $1-million home is just a few metres from a sinkhole that opened up in 2012, swallowing a car.
“We had an independent appraisal done, but due to the special circumstances they said our house is now worth zero,” said Greg.
The Lathams dropped out of the lawsuit after it became clear they could not hope to recover their loss, because their house is so far undamaged.
An earlier assessment by Thurber Engineering noted that wet zones, spontaneous springs and sinkholes developed during site preparation for building in 2008.
“These issues were ongoing throughout construction and are documented in the available geotechnical information,” the report said.
Engineering studies of the area dating back to 1988 noted the potential for soil instability, but generally concluded the site could be used for dwellings.
The district has filed suit against Concordia to recover $500,000 in municipal repair costs.
In approving the development, the district entered into a covenant in 2008 with Concordia stating the “Municipality has no specific knowledge and makes no representations or warranties regarding the geotechnical adequacy of the lands for the proposed uses,” according to the District’s notice of civil claim.
Concordia has built and sold 15 homes in Seawatch and holds 14 more empty lots and one empty home that may never be occupied.

Kaylynn Knull, 29, and her boyfriend Tom Schwander, 33, said they were forced to cut their trip short because they fell seriously ill during their stay at the resort. SOZTThe Dominican Republic is a hugely popular vacation destination for Americans, so what is a tourist to do while they await the FBI toxicology analysis? Heart attacks or heart failure is implicated because of the respiratory failure. The Dominican Republic does not have the facilities to do a toxicology test on the bodies, and there seems to be no connection among those suddenly stricken. Is it cheap bootleg booze in the mini-bars? The deaths seemed to occur often just after a mini-bar drink. Is it pesticides lingering in the rooms?
It is none of these possibilities but another. In each of these instances where an otherwise healthy individual is suddenly stricken, it has been murder. The liquor in the mini-bars will be cleared. It is glasses on the trays that are wiped along the lip line with poison. The motive is theft, as the couples have been robbed prior to death, and in the uproar over the medical emergency no one is counting change. It is not uncommon for vacationers to carry large amounts of cash and they don’t keep a log of what was spent or what remains. EOZT…

Prior ZT: http://www.zetatalk.com/ning/14ap2012.htmWe have been asked about Manchurian Candidates and stated that where the military would love to develop such a weapon, their attempts have all failed. Prior 1995 ZT: http://www.zetatalk.com/rules/r17.htm The robot that propagates, learns, thinks, and as all life has emotion is alive, yet enslaved, as controls would surely be put into place to prevent the servant class from arising. That those in [young worlds], who are emerging souls in the process of determining a spiritual orientation, would attempt to do so is one of the reasons for limiting the capabilities on your world. Mankind, in short, is too dumb to create a handy-dandy version of intelligent, sentient life. One, per their desires, which would never break down or talk back, would always look good, be compliant in bed, foresee one's needs, repair the car, be infinitely loyal, smart as a whip but never look down on the master, and never suffer from neglect. Our computers utilize organic materials. This does not make them robots, nor sentient. You also use organic materials, in your shoes, your belts, your shirts, your salad bowls, etc.
Prior 1996 ZT: http://www.zetatalk.com/govmt/g58.htmThe dream of all controlling individuals, a category which includes the military hierarchy, is to create virtual robots out of the population at the flip of a switch. The secret government, which in the early days was heavily influenced by the CIA, longed to master what they considered to be mind control techniques. Needless to say, they did not succeed, but their fervor and rumors of this activity inspired such stories as the Manchurian Candidate, where humans, while unaware, are time bombs waiting to become absolute robots behaving in a preprogrammed manner. This is all so far from what is possible as to be positively silly.
