Three people feared dead as Bungoma building falls
THREE people are feared dead after a building under construction in Bungoma town collapsed on Monday evening. The building adjacent to Bungoma High School in Milimani estate belonging to a prominent businessman Naz Shariffs collapsed as the construction workers continued with work on the third floor. By the time we went to the press the three construction workers who had been buried in the debris had not been evacuated. One of them answered calls made to his cell phone for more one hour after the incident.
The phone of the construction worker identified as Were later went off bringing communication to a halt. There were no special equipments to rescue those buried in the debris with red cross officials struggling to use graders from the nearby construction companies to try and save those buried. The exercise was, however, halted by the heavy rains pounding the area forcing the rescuers to call off the exercise until Tuesday morning.
Eight other people are admitted at Kitale District Hospital with serious fractures but doctors described their conditions as stable. Bungoma Municipal Council chief engineer Dennis Nyongesa blamed poor workmanship for the collapse of the building. He said though the plan for the building was approved by the council, the materials were not used as required . “The mixture of sand and cement by the contractor was not proper and you can see clearly that somebody slept on his job,” he said.
His sentiments came even as the owner of the building Naz Shariffs insisted the building was strong enough and had followed all the procedures as required by law. “Both the council engineers and the public works engineer had approved the building and they have also been visiting us to check on our progress regularly," he said.
Upper Western regional commissioner Rashid Mohamed who visited the site blamed the council and public works engineers of failing to stop the construction of the building even when it was clear that it was not being done professionally. “You can even see that the beams used for the construction of the building are very weak with wet bricks being used for the walls,” he said. He said all those involved in the construction will be probed to establish what went wrong….ENDS
