Dozens of homes in the District of Bale Endah, Bandung regency, West Java, is still overflowing Citarum River flooded. Rain is always happening at night to make Kampung Cienteung flooded with half a meter height.

Philippines:

2 killed in Zambo landslide

MANILA, Philippines – A man was killed after being buried in a landslide in Barangay San Roque, Zamboanga City on Tuesday noon, authorities said.

The victim was identified as Miguel Gamores, who was allegedly collecting sand and gravel with 2 others, identified as Edwin Resor and Roderick Cabugsa.

Resor said he was able to move out of harm’s way before the landslide.

Cabugsa, on the other hand, was buried with Gamores.

Cabugsa was later rescued after two hours.

San Roque barangay chairman Bernard Clemente said the area where the victims were collecting sand and gravel used to be a quarry site.

Authorities said residents have been digging in the area illegally and it may have triggered the landslide.

The retrieval operation for Gamores’s body is still ongoing.

6 dead in SE China landslide

FUZHOU - Six people have been confirmed dead after a landslide buried a work shed in Southeast China's Fujian province last week, local authorities said Monday.

The disaster occurred at 3:30 pm on April 24 in Longdeyang village of Daqiao township, Gutian county, burying six people, according to the county government.

Rescuers have retrieved five bodies, and have claimed there is no chance that the missing person has survived.

An investigation blamed illegal rare earth mining, recent rains and landslide-prone geological conditions for the disaster.

Local police authorities have launched an investigation into the illegal mining activities.

Two suspects have been apprehended by police.

A pregnant woman, a boy and a man were swept away by raging floods as rains continued to cause havoc.

Twenty-five-year-old Evelyne Nyanchoka drowned on Sunday night after she slipped while crossing a temporary bridge erected across River Keyian in Enoosaen location, Trans Mara West District, Narok.

Nyanchoka was from work and was heading to her home in Monianku village in neighbouring Gucha South District. According to her husband Evans Abobo, a herdsman, his wife left home in search of a job at a farm.

Trans Mara police boss Titus Yoma said family members later recovered her body sandwiched between two rocks. "It took several hours for the body to be retrieved since the area is full of rocks," said Yoma.

And in another incident, a taxi was swept away by water at the flooded River Siteti in Angata. Luckily, all passengers on board escaped to safety.

In Naivasha, a middle-aged man drowned in flood water, bringing to ten the number of people who have died in the area due to floods in a week.

In Trans-Nzoia County, the seven-year-old boy was the latest person to die because of floods.

The boy identified as Yunis Muricho drowned as he tried to cross Chetoto Bridge near Kipsongo slum in Kitale. Her aunt, Martha Nelima, who was with him, said her nephew slipped from her hands and was swept away.

"We were trying to cross the bridge when the boy slipped from my hands and drowned," Nelima said.

Police led by Kitale OCS Bonayo Galogalo launched a search for the boy. His body was discovered floating near Kenya Agricultural Research Institute, about two kilometres away.

A sombre mood engulfed Kispongo slums, where the boy lived, after his body was retrieved from the river Monday morning.

And in Igembe North, residents counted losses after floods destroyed property worth thousands of shillings. Mark Gitonga, a victim, said the rains started at 11pm leading to floods. "Many houses are full of water. Floods carried goats, chicken and other animals away. Many people had to seek refuge in their neighbours’ houses located on higher grounds," he said.

Amwathi civic leader Joseph Gichunge said floods have displaced hundreds of people and called on the Government to assist victims.

"The damage caused by floods is immense. The water has opened up graves. We are glad that no life was lost. Government and well wishers should assist," said Gichunge.

Joseph Muthee, a resident of Karichu market blamed road contractors for failing to build a drainage system. "We always experience floods every rainy season. When road surveyors came, we asked them to construct a culvert to allow free flow of water but they ignored," Muthee said.

MORE than 300 residents of Kobala sub-location, Rachuonyo North district have been displaced by floods after. Close to 50 homes were submerged river Miriu broke its banks following heavy rains. Area DC William Lenaremo said the displaced have been moved to Osodo Primary School and Osodo SDA Church.

He said the floods swept away all crops which had been planted within the affected area, adding that the situation might culminate in severe famine in the area. “I have already talked to the Kenya Red Cross, MSF and the Special Programmes ministry to offer assistance to the victims. The Ministry has not responded but I expect their reply as soon as possible,” the DC said.

Lenaremo urged other families living on the flood prone areas to move to higher grounds and expressed concern that the situation might worsen since the river continues to over flow. Kenya Red Cross Homa-Bay branch co-coordinator John Roche, who visited the scene said the water level was still very high. “We are still assessing the situation to enable us offer the necessary support to the victims,”Roche said.
