Colombia:

Colombia: Floods Leave 46 Dead and Over 113,000 People Homeless

In less than two months, floods in Colombia have killed 46 people according to the country’s risk management agency.

The National Unit for Disaster Risk Management (UNGRD) issued a report stating the figures, along with over 113,602 people left homeless while 10 people are still missing.

The UNGRD report, issued by President Juan Manuel Santos’ office, found that 381 roads have been disrupted, 180,096 homes and five health centres have been damaged, 79 aqueducts have been disrupted, and 483 houses are completely destroyed.

Two weeks ago President Santos enacted the Disaster Risk Management Law, an initiative which allows the government to respond quickly in order to prevent natural disasters affecting the population.

Of Colombia’s 32 departments, 28 have been affected by the heavy rains and floods. The hardest hit has been Valle del Cauca in the West of the country, which has Calí as it’s capital.

The report also found that 613 smaller disasters have taken place across the country due to the rains, including landslides, avalanches, windstorms, hail storms, and floods.

The rains and freak weather are part of the La Niña weather phenomenon, which is now coming to an end after starting in March. Despite this, forecasters predict that the heavy rain will continue throughout May and June during Colombia’s rainy season.

According to meteorological records, the amount of rain is 20% higher than average levels for this time of year.

Ricardo Lozano, head of the Institute of Hydrology, Meteorology, and Environmental Studies (IDEAM), says the institute fears that El Niño, another weather phenomenon in Latin America will cause extreme drought in Colombia in the months following the rains.

“We have to live with the circumstances of extreme rainfall and extreme drought. Possibly we will experience the El Niño phenomenon. We have to prepare ourselves because it is repeated periodically and there is a likelihood of dry conditions,” said Lozano.
