A crane tipped off its tracks on the Port Mann bridge construction project east of Vancouver on Friday morning and dropped a segment of the bridge into the Fraser River.

Bridge project spokesman Max Logan said the gantry crane, which is designed to move on rails, is secure and nobody was hurt, but a 90-tonne section of the bridge deck the crane was moving fell into the Fraser River.

The segment struck a pile as it fell and is now submerged in the river. It is unclear whether the segment can be recovered.

The bridge segments are brought in by barge and lifted into place by the special 720-tonne horizontal gantry crane, which is also called a segment launcher.

Logan said one of the supports for the gantry appears to have been crushed and the gantry pitched forward.

It is unclear how long the mishap will delay the project, but the contractor Kiewit is responsible for any costs that result.

The Trans-Canada Highway remains open on the old Port Mann Bridge and there are no reports of any injuries.

When completed, the $800-million bridge will provide 10-lane crossing of the Fraser River for the Trans-Canada Highway east of Vancouver. It is scheduled to be completed in 2013.

Crane falls at Mich. construction site; 3 hurt

A 250-foot-tall crane collapsed Friday morning onto a building at a construction site at the Kent County jail complex in Grand Rapids, injuring three people, authorities said.

The jail was placed on lockdown following the incident. Kent County Undersheriff Jon Hess described the injuries to a construction worker and two Kent County jail trustees as minor, The Grand Rapids Press (http://bit.ly/ziaMEe) reported.

Both the department construction company officials said all inmates and workers were accounted for.

Construction company Owen-Ames-Kimball Co. said Friday in a statement it was investigating the cause of the accident and had no further information. Hess said it appears that a cable snapped as the crane was carrying cement.

Images from the scene showed part of the crane leaning against a building. A garage area where sheriff's vehicles are kept was damaged.

The main jail that houses inmates apparently wasn't damaged, and Hess said authorities were checking the structural integrity of that building.

The crane that fell has been used for seven months on a $27 million renovation project, Hess said.

HANOVER TOWNSHIP, N.J. (CBSNewYork) — A New Jersey construction worker is dead and another injured after an accident involving a crane.

The workers were part of a crew building a new fire station when something went terribly wrong.

As CBS2’s Hazel Sanchez reported, Whippany firefighters got the tragic call Thursday, responding to the construction site of their future fire house on Troy Hills Road off Route 10.

One construction worker was killed, crushed by a generator. Another worker was seriously injured. Investigators have not released the workers’ names.

“It’s a real tragedy, really. You get up in the morning to go to work and you’re not going home,” said Hanover resident Debbie Daiuto.

A crane crew had secured the generator and was moving it to its permanent location when it appears two of the four yellow support belts snapped, flipping the generator onto two workers who were guiding it into place, Sanchez reported.

Neighboring communities, including Madison and Cedar Knolls fire departments, came to assist Whippany’s bravest who were the first to respond.

“I’m also in the construction business so seeing something like this is shocking,” said Parsipp…

At least one dead and another trapped in crushed car after massive New York crane collapses in rush hour At least one person has died and more than a dozen injured after a massive crane collapsed on a street in New York this morning.

Another remains trapped inside a car which has been crushed by the gigantic crane after it plunged down on a busy street in lower Manhattan this morning.

Two more people are in a critical condition and another seriously injured after the horror accident, the New York fire department confirmed.

It fell on a number of cars when it came plummetting to the ground, smashing their roofs.

A senior city official also said the crane hit a number of buildings on its way down.

One person was trapped inside a vehicle on Broadway in the Tribeca neighbourhood after the incident, which happened at 8.30am local time this morning.

A badge on the crane showed the logo for Bay Crane, a company that owns a second crane that collapsed 30 floors in New York last year.

It is unclear what caused the plane to collapse this morning, but Storm Team 4 claims weather conditions are unlikely.

KUALA LUMPUR: A construction worker was killed instantly when a crane collapsed at a construction site in Jalan Damansara, here, earlier today. The 4.40pm incident saw the victim Li Yi Jia, 50, pinned by a steel frame against a concrete pillar, which is being built to support a flyover there. City Fire and Rescue Department senior operations commander Muhammad Firdaus Khan said authorities believed that the victim and two of his colleagues were on the steel frame when it was being lifted by the crane. "When the crane suddenly collapsed, the victim was trapped in between the steel frame and concrete pillar. "However, his colleagues were lucky as they only fell to the ground and suffered minor injuries," he said. Firdaus said the driver of the crane, which had tilted about 90 degrees vertically following the collapse, also sustained minor injuries. Crane collapsed near Flagler Bridge; no injuries reported

Posted: 10:51 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 6, 2016

Palm Beach Post Staff Writer

A crane collapsed onto a barge near the Flagler Memorial Bridge on Wednesday morning, but the crane operator was uninjured, West Palm Beach Fire Rescue reports.

The crane failure happened just before 9 a.m. on the west side of the Lake Worth Lagoon, said Tish Burgher, spokeswoman for the bridge replacement project.

The crane never landed in the water and the operator was able to get out without injury, fire rescue spokeswoman Diana Matty said.

Although there were workers in the area, none was injured, Matty added.

The crane collapse caused no damage to the existing or replacement bridge, Burgher said.

Eastbound traffic on the bridge was shut down for 30 minutes, then reopened at 9:15 a.m.

The Flagler Memorial Bridge project began in 2012 and is expected to last until 2017.
