In fact, there is a fault line running from the approximate San Diego/LA area, up into the Sierras, and this is liable to rupture rather violently during one of the quakes that precedes the pole shift by some months. Volcanic eruptions from that area in the Sierras can be expected. Will Mount St. Helen erupt? Mt. Sinabung's Eruption Spawns Tornadoes (Feb 1)

When Mt Sinabung erupted on Feb 1, pyroclastic flows left red-hot deposits along the way.

As the air above the deposits heated and quickly rose, a group of small tornadoes formed, twisting their way down the mountainside.

KUALA LUMPUR: The northwesterly winds may cause ashes from the recently erupted Mount Sinabung volcano in Indonesia to reach the southern peninsular of Malaysia, causing flight disruptions and reduced visibility.

The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MET) said, recent reports showed that the winds may continue until Wednesday. MET added that it will continue monitoring the situation and update its information on the direction of the wind and its possible threat to flights and visibility.

Last Saturday, the National Agency for Disaster Management (BNPB) Indonesia confirmed around 16 deaths and 3 injuries following the eruption of Mount Sinabung in the district of Karo, North Sumatera.

Hot clouds of ash and smoke continues to emanate from the volcano at dangerous levels, affecting the health of the people in the surrounding area.

Those who stay close to the area have been moved to a temporary safe house.

Sinabung is one of 129 active volcanoes in Indonesia, which sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire, a belt of seismic activity running around the basin of the Pacific Ocean.

Volcano's Ash Affects One-Third of Ecuador Provinces (Feb 3)

The Tungurahua volcano in Ecuador has been spewing lava and ash, covering villages hundreds of kilometres away with a white dusting.

The ash travelled as far as Loja province, on the border with Peru.

A cloud of ash that climbed more than 2.5-mile-high (4-kilometer) from Tungurahua volcano on Monday has affected a third of Ecuador's provinces and forced the suspension of classes at some schools after temporarily closing a regional airport.

A series of 10 powerful cannon-like blasts shook the 16,480-foot (5,023-meter) volcano overnight and could be heard for miles. Tungurahua is nearly 90 miles (140 kilometers) south of Quito.

Fernanda Naranjo of Ecuador's geophysics institute said there have been no pyroclastic flow -- fast-moving, super-hot fluidized masses of rock fragments and gases-- since Saturday.

One such flow halted less than a mile from a highway, according to a bulletin posted on the institute's website. But none has reached villages, where residents have been evacuating their homes during the nighttime, then returning during the day. The volcano resumed erupting late last week after being quiet since October.

In Monday's bulletin, the institute said it is likely that Tungurahua will continue to experience explosions and produce small and moderate pyroclastic flows. It also said continued adverse health effects and more disruptions of air travel were possible.

On Sunday, ash from Tungurahua forced the closure for several hours Sunday of the Mariscal Lamar airport in Cuenca, Ecuador's third-largest city.

The government called for voluntary evacuations of hundreds of people living near Tungurahua, officials distributed masks to protect them against the inhalation of ash.

22 Volcanoes in Indonesia on Raised Alert Status (Feb 3)

Three volcanoes in Indonesia are at high risk of erupting, authorities warned after Mount Sinabung killed 15 people in North Sumatra over the weekend.

Authorities said Karangetang and Lokon volcanoes on Sulawesi Island and Roketada in East Nusa Tenggara have been placed on high alert – the third in a four level scale.

Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, spokesman for the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB), told the Jakarta Globe: "The [third level of alert] status means that all the data show that an eruption or a disaster could happen. It means preparation for the people living in the dangerous areas; setting up emergency facilities, daily coordination, and full-time patrols."

As many as 19 volcanoes in Indonesia have shown increasing volcanic activities and their statuses have been raised from normal to alert level II.

Head of Data and Information Center of National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) Sutopo Purwo Nugroho issued a statement, here on Monday that the 19 volcanoes are Kelud, Raung, Ibu, Lewotobi Perempuan, Ijen, Gamkonora, Soputan, Sangeangapi, Papandayan, Dieng, Seulewah Agam, Gamalama, Bromo, Semeru, Talang, Anak Krakatau, Marapi, Dukono and Kerinci.

"The alert level II simply means an increasing activity of the volcano above normal status; all symptoms are taken into account." Nugroho assured.

Tourism centers, hotels, agriculture and peoples economic activities outside the exclusion zone might be affected. "It happens at Mount Bromo, Ijen, Dieng, Tangkuban Perahu and Papandayan," Nugroho added.

Hotels and tourism centers in Kabanjahe, North Sumatra, were deserted as people are afraid to visit these places.

There are stages from normal, alert level II (Waspada), alert level III (Siaga) and alert level IV (Awas) depending on the threat potential," Nugroho explained.

The status of Mount Kelud of East Java was raised from normal to alert level II on Sunday (Feb. 2) following its increasing volcanic activity.

Meanwhile, there are three volcanoes on alert level III (Siaga): Karangetang (N Sulawesi), Lokon (N Sulawesi) and Rokatenda (E Nusa Tenggara).

Ecuador's Tungurahua Volcano Erupts 3 Times, 40,000 Ft Ash Cloud (Feb 1)

Ecuador's Geophysics Institute is reporting that the Tungurahua volcano has erupted three times, a series of powerful vulcanian explosions that produced an ash plume surpassing 40,000 ft (13 km) altitude, with heavy tephra fall and pyroclastic flows to up to approx 8 km length.

The institute said that two moderate explosions on Saturday were followed by a third of greater size, and pyroclastic flow stretched 500 meters down its flank. The blasts created a 5-mile (8-kilometer) column of ash above the volcano, which is located 84 miles (135 kilometers) southeast of the capital, Quito.

Heavy ash fall occurred immediately afterwards on all sides of the volcano, most notably to the NW, NE, W, W and SE. In the sector of Chacauco, the tephra fall caused total darkness.

Collapsing parts of the eruption column produced larger pyroclastic flows that descended the Juive, Vazcúnto, and other canyons draining from the volcano reaching its feet. The largest flow descended on the NW side reached the lower Achupashal valley, cut the Baños-Penipe road and plunged into the Chambo river after reaching more than 7-8 km from the volcano.

Some of the flows damaged IGPEN monitoring instruments in the ravines of Vazcun, Achupashal, and Juive, blocking a route to a tourist site called Banos.

After 7:00 pm local time, paroxysm activity gradually decreased and turned to continuous, but still very strong strombolian explosions that were accompanied by strong shock waves that rattled windows and roofs of houses in surrounding villages. Lava fountains could be seen rising 500-800 m from the crater.

Sad news today: the volcano claimed its first victims this morning due to a direct effect of the eruption. At least 14 people were reported killed and 3 others severely bunt by one or two moderately large pyroclastic flows this morning. 3 more people are still reported missing.

According to Jakarta Post all fatalities that could be located so far had occurred in Suka Meriah village, which is located within a 3-kilometer radius of the volcano, thus in well in the exclusion zone

According to BNPB spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, there were three eruptions: the first eruption occurred at 10:30 a.m. (local time) and lasted for eight-and-a-half-minutes, generating a 4.5 km long pyroclastic flow, while the second followed immediately after at 10:38 a.m. and lasted just over four

minutes, followed by a third one at 11:27 a.m. for 84 seconds.
It is not exactly clear where the pyroclastic flow originated, from explosions at the summit, collapse of the summit lava dome, or from (partial collapse) on the viscous flow that had recently been emplaced

Kavachi is an undersea volcano on the southern edge of the Solomon Islands in the western Pacific Ocean. It erupted dozens of times in the 20th century, often breaking the water surface, only to be eroded back below the water line within a few months.

On January 29, 2014, the Advanced Land Imager (ALI) on the Earth Observing-1 (EO-1) satellite captured what could be the start of a new cycle of island life and death. Aquamarine water extends eastward from the submerged volcano; the color is likely from dissolved volcanic gases and lava fragments suspended in the water. Directly above the undersea peak, a bright patch is suggestive of vigorously churning water—but there is no sign that the eruption has broken the surface.

AVCAN- Kilauea is one of the few volcanoes with permanent lava lake inside. This lake often emits splash magma flowing into the edges, causing an effect of "lava bubbles bursting on the surface."

This phenomenon could capture on Thursday with spectacular images of gushing lava from the volcano's summit.

Indonesian Authorities Grapple With Refugee Crisis (Jan 22)
Months of volcanic eruptions have displaced tens of thousands, forcing Indonesian authorities to grapple with a growing refugee crisis on Sumatra Island.

Over the past three months, daily eruptions from Mount Sinabung, a massif in Indonesia's far west, have displaced nearly 30,000 residents and caused millions of dollars in damage.

A handful of villages are being permanently relocated and the evacuation zone stretches between 3.1 and 4.3 miles down the mountain. Officials have a contingency plan to extend it to around six miles if activity worsens, which would raise the number of evacuees to almost 60,000 people. There is no telling when the eruptions will end.

The displaced around Sinabung are mainly small landholders who farm the fertile volcanic soils below the roughly 8,200-foot peak. Many have sold their livestock and are relying on government assistance.

The evacuees are housed and fed in mosques, churches and wedding halls in various degrees of comfort. In the largest mosque in Kabanjahe, the district seat, one group of more than 600 villagers has slept on floor mats since early November.

Since November, the mountain has been spewing gray ash as much as four miles into the sky. The spread of fine dust has coated the landscape and ash has traveled 35 miles to Medan, home to more than two million people.

Increasingly, the eruptions are accompanied by the more dangerous pyroclastic flows, the longest of which have extended about three miles down the mountain.

Part of the challenge in Indonesia, a sprawling country of 18,000 islands and more than 240 million people, is that disasters can strike in unison. In the past week, heavy rains have forced more than 40,000 people from their homes in the capital, Jakarta, and 15,000 more in the eastern island of Sulawesi.
