The crumbling of the East Coast infrastructure starting to show

6/2/2011  Section of Westbound I-86 Closed in Western New York After Shoulder Collapse

A section of I-86 (aka the Southern Tier Expressway) in western New York will be shut down for most of the summer after heavy rains caused part of the road's shoulder to collapse.

The state Department of Transportation announced Tuesday that westbound Interstate 86 will be closed, effective immediately, between Exit 19 and Exit 18 in the towns of Red House and Cold Spring, Cattaraugus County and the Seneca Nation, due to a slope failure.

The westbound on ramp from NY Route 417 to westbound Interstate 86 is closed. Exit 20 (NY Route 417, Casino) and Exit 19 (Red House, Allegany State Park) on westbound Interstate 86 will remain open. The closure is expected to remain in effect for approximately three months.

A detour is posted at Exit 21 (Parkway Drive) for through traffic on westbound Interstate 86. Motorists are advised to follow the westbound detour using northbound US Route 219, westbound NY Route 242, westbound NY Route 394 and West Main Street. Traffic will re-enter westbound Interstate 86 at Exit 16.

Investigators believe an open fire hydrant caused a massive landslide and power outage in Homewood on Monday.Pittsburgh fire crews told Channel 4 Action News reporter Ari Hait that residents opened the hydrant along Brushton Road this morning so children in the neighborhood could keep cool."After running all day, it waterlogged the hillside and started to cause a small landslide or mudslide, uprooted the big tree," said Battalion Chief Tim Kopicko.Kopicko said the slide took down about a dozen of trees and a chain-link fence. One of the trees landed on top of the high tension lines and sparked a dangerous situation."If the power lines come down, there's no telling where they're going to land or what they're going to energize if they hit the fence or the guardrail," said Kopicko.Crews closed the road to prevent traffic from going through and residents were asked to stay away from the lines.A Duquesne Light spokesperson said they had to restore power to 600 customers in that area.
