CONROE, Texas — One person is dead and another is hospitalized after a trench collapse in Conroe on Saturday, according to fire officials.
The Conroe Fire Department said crews were dispatched around 11:55 a.m. to the 3600 block of South Loop 336 East near FM 3083 East for reports of a trench rescue. While en route, responders learned two people may be trapped.
Firefighters arrived on scene just after noon but faced challenges reaching the site, which was located about 1,000 feet from the main road and difficult to access due to the terrain.
Once crews reached the trench, they confirmed two victims were buried, prompting additional resources to assist the department’s technical rescue team.
Rescuers were able to safely deploy specialized equipment and begin recovery efforts. The first victim was pulled from the trench at 12:56 p.m. and was pronounced dead at the scene, officials said.
A second victim was removed at 1:11 p.m. and transported by the Montgomery County Hospital District to HCA Houston Healthcare Conroe. Their condition has not been released.
During the operation, a construction worker at the scene also suffered a medical emergency and was treated by paramedics.
Officials say trench rescues are complex and require extensive manpower and expertise. Multiple agencies responded to assist, including Montgomery County Emergency Service Districts 9 and 1, The Woodlands Fire Department and the Montgomery County Office of Emergency Management.
The incident remains under investigation by the Conroe Police Department. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration has also been notified.
