WAIMEA, Hawaii (KHON2) — Heavy rains caused multiple road closures and evacuations across the North Shore on Friday.
Around 1:30 p.m., two large boulders fell on the Haleiwa side of Waimea Bay prompting the closure of Kamehameha Highway through at least Saturday, April 11.
The rock fall happened near the area where the landslide onto Waimea bay beach park occurred after the first Kona low storm last month.
Officials said hazardous conditions forced the full closure, with no reopening time announced.
“We got some issues coming from the mauka side… a lot of large boulders came down in this area,” said Sniffen.
He added that some of the boulders are about nine feet in diameter.

“So we’re shutting down the highway now at this time, we’re sending up our crews to start scaling the slope anything that’s loose up there and we’re gonna bring it down,” said Sniffen.
Crews are working to clear debris and stabilize the slope, but more loose material remains.
“There’s a lot of material still up there, so we’re shutting down the highway at this time,” Sniffen continued.
Officials said the cleanup and safety work could take about 24 hours. Drivers are urged to avoid the area.
“In order to make sure that we don’t damage the road or the water line that’s under it, we’re gonna be setting up steel plates in this area so we can drop those rocks and move on this area, but this area will be closed for the next 24 hours,” Sniffen added.
Police officers are turning cars around at Pupukea Road on the Sunset side of Waimea Bay and at Iliohu Pl. on the Haleiwa end.
Residents from Waimea Valley through Three Tables area will be let through but pedestrians will not be allowed to pass the area.
We will follow up with DOT in the morning for any updates on when the road will reopen.
