The Portland Bureau of Transportation said the landslide happened on Friday morning between the two tunnels east of the Bird Alliance.
“PBOT crews will be working overtime on Saturday and Sunday to clear landslide debris, expected to take 15 to 20 loads in 12-yard dump trucks,” said Dylan Rivera, a PBOT spokesperson. “Then, we’ll consult with structural and geotechnical engineers from PBOT and other bureaus to see what it will take to get the slide into a safe condition.”
For the crew’s safety, the work must be completed during daylight hours, Rivera said.
“[‘S]o we expect to be working on this slide well into next week,” he said.
Until the work is completed, drivers are advised to continue avoiding the area. A detour route has been posted along West Burnside Street. There are also detour signs posted near the intersections of Northwest 23rd Avenue and Northwest Lovejoy Street, and Northwest Skyline Boulevard and Northwest Cornell Road.
Currently, the Bird Alliance of Oregon can only be accessed from the west.
Oregon Department of Transportation’s TripCheck site has the latest information about road closures and alternative routes.
PBOT will post the latest updates on Cornell Road on its Instagram and Facebook pages.
