What happens to rock layers under a diagonal pull, or being pulled apart? As can be seen during recent years, this has resulted in derailing trains, sinkholes suddenly appearing, gas and water main breaks, torn roadways and separating bridges. Despite the effect on man, crawling about on the surface of what they assume to be terra firma, these changes are superficial. When the pulling starts, weak points break and thereafter the plumbing and roadways hold, giving the impression that the pulling has stopped, but this is misleading. The North American continent is giving evidence that its rock layers are separating from each other, and sliding sideways in a diagonal, thus exposing portions of these layers to vent into the air above. If rock is being stressed, then where are the earthquake predictors giving evidence of this, the frantic animals, the static on the radio, the earthquake swarms? Rock in the stretch zone, pulling apart rather than compressing, does not emit the particles flows that animals and radios sense, nor register on instruments are tension and release quakes.

Underground water flows eat away the limestone leaving vast caverns and caves, which often give scant indication above ground that a cavern lies below. Karst limestone rock formations have been mapped and are known, however, but since one never knows just where a cavern might have formed, this provides little help in predicting just where a sinkhole might form. Sinkholes open up when the rock is fractured due to stress from being in the stretch zone, from the bending of a plate, or due to torsion."

RIVERSIDE CO., California - A train derailment has pushed multiple cargo cars off its tracks, leaving some partially in the sand near the Salton Sea.
The incident was reported just before 6 p.m. near Parkside Dr in North Shore. Early information indicates several train cars came loose and slid off the rails.
Officials have not yet confirmed the cause of the derailment, and it remains unclear if there are any injuries at this time.

GERMANTOWN, Maryland - A section of Liberty Mill Road is shut down in Germantown, Maryland, Thursday morning as crews respond to a gas leak and sinkhole.
Montgomery County Police Department said as of 10:17 a.m., the closure is between Dawson Farm Road and Pepper Court.
Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service (MCFRS) crews are on scene and leading the response.

TOLEDO, Ohio
A massive sinkhole formed on a sidewalk in Point Place this week.
13 Action News was on the scene when city crews showed up to block off the sinkhole that formed on the sidewalk beside a bench on North Summit Street near 109th Street.
The timeline for repair is still unknown.

DAUPHIN CO., Pennsylvania — The ramp from I-83 North to 13th St (Exit 44A) is closed in Dauphin Co after a sinkhole opened up Thursday afternoon.
PennDOT spokesperson Fritzi Schreffler described it as "a significant sinkhole that is too big to allow traffic past it safely."

ISABELLA CO., Michigan — A sinkhole has shut down a portion of M-20 east of Remus and damaged one vehicle because of a failed pipeline under the road.
The MDOT has closed M-20, also known as Remus Road bw Sherman Rd & Costabella Ave in Isabella Co to repair the failed culvert after heavy rainfall.
The sinkhole is located bw the cities of Remus & Mount Pleasant.
“The sinkhole is the width of the road. Engineers are contributing it to heavy rainfall.”

ASHLEY, Pennsylvania — A sinkhole partially under Luzerne County’s rail line in Ashley is expected to temporarily suspend train traffic, county Redevelopment Authority Executive Director Margaret Thomas said Tuesday.
Thomas said the authority, which owns the rail line and land containing the sinkhole, was informed of the discovery Saturday.
This stretch of line services the Hanover Industrial Park, she said.
The authority was awaiting a determination from the Pennsylvania DEP on the cause of the sinkhole and how it must be addressed, Thomas said.
Thomas said she was informed the Ashley hole was estimated to be at least 30’ deep.
A DEP spokesperson said Tuesday evening the department’s Bureau of Abandoned Mine Reclamation has concluded the hole is not mine-related.

DALLAS, Texas — A deep sinkhole has closed part of a popular White Rock Lake trail as the city monitors whether rain will worsen the collapse.
The sinkhole, located between Lawther Dr and Garland Rd, is estimated to be at least 14 feet deep.
The city has blocked off the area while crews assess the damage.

PARKERSBURG, West Virginia — A sinkhole opened Tuesday in downtown Parkersburg near the corner of Fifth and Market St, exposing old wood and metal structures beneath the surface.
The hole appeared in the lot of a vacant building next to the historic Smoot Theatre.
It was not immediately clear what caused the ground to give way or whether the materials exposed under the surface were part of an old structure or previous infrastructure.

INDEPENDENCE, Virginia — A sinkhole opened up in the parking lot of the Independence Food City bw Thurs night and Fri morning (March 4-5) but is already being worked on, said a statement released by the store’s parent company, K-VA-T Food Stores, Inc.
Witnesses and social media commenters said they’d seen the pavement in that area sagging late Thurs afternoon, beginning to fall in closer to closing time. It was blocked off at this time.
By opening the next morning, a large, deep sinkhole had appeared.
“There was no prior indication of a problem at the location,” said K-VA-T’s official statement.
An engineer was reportedly on-site Fri, inspecting the sinkhole.
