"The causes of landslides are not a mystery to mankind. Layers of rock and soil such that rain running along a clay or rock layer can create a slippery surface for the weight of the layers above it is a common cause. A rock jumble from previous mountain building, broken or fractured rock easily dislodged. We have stated that the earthquakes man experiences between the periodic passages of Planet X can be considered aftershocks from the last passage, and this is true of landslides also. Mountain building rumples the landscape, so the land is not flat but has steep ravines and hill sides. Older mountain ranges are recognized for their rounded or smoothed appearance, because of frequent landslides distributing the rubble.
"As we approach another passage, another Pole Shift, the pace of landslides has picked up. Why would this be? Plates under pressure will put pressure on regions that contain rumpled hillsides and deep ravines, as these give more readily than strictly flat land, thus act as a weak link. In addition, due to the wobble, the weather has gotten more extreme, with drought and deluge increasing in extremes. Dry ground, suddenly flooded with rainwater needing to seek its level as runoff, will create internal water slides between the rock and soil layers that constitute the rumpled hillsides. Is there an early warning system that mankind could use? The trembles that soil about to slide emits could be detected, yes. These are not earthquakes, and have their own frequency. "

Crosia, Italy - A large landslide took place in Crosia, Province of Cosenza, on March 17, amid prolonged heavy rainfall that caused flooding and heightened hydrogeological instability across the Ionian sector of Calabria.
Unofficial reports mention over 220 mm (8.6 inches) of rainfall falling over already saturated soils within 30 to 36 hours.
Local media reported that the landslide affected the slope above Via San Francesco di Paola.
The slope failure occurred in the historic center near residential structures and prompted the precautionary evacuation of approximately 80 people after the mass of saturated soil detached.

Stilo, Italy - Firefighters in action in Stilo, in the province of Reggio Calabria, where a large landslide hit the town.
The collapse occurred along the ridge located at the convent, causing the sliding of a substantial mass of debris that hit a house and ran over several cars.

Whistler, BC - Canada — No one was injured during a rockslide on Whistler Peak at Whistler Blackcomb on Thursday. According to Vail Resorts, which owns and operates Whistler Blackcomb, the rockslide happened around 6:30 a.m., before the ski resort had opened.
“No one was in the area at the time,” said Chloe Hajjar with Vail Resorts. Video taken from the area shows the slide spanned a section of roughly 100 metres on Whistler Peak, between the West Cirque and Monday’s double black diamond runs.
Hajjar said Whistler Peak and the Peak Express Chair will remain closed until further notice while its operations team assesses the situation. Jeff Crompton, a research scientist at the Geological Survey of Canada based in Squamish, described the rockslide as medium in size after viewing videos of it.
“There are giant rock blocks that have come down,” he said.

PBOT responding to several landslides around Portland area
A landslide has closed SW Fairmount Boulevard between SW Marquam Hill Road to SW Mt. Adams Drive - PBOT photoPORTLAND, Ore. (KATU) — Crews with the Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT) have had their hands full responding to multiple landslides around the Portland metro area as an atmospheric river pummels the Pacific Northwest.
Southwest Fairmount Boulevard was closed Friday by a landslide and several downed trees, PBOT said. The closure is along Fairmount Blvd. from SW Marquam Hill Road to SW Mt. Adams Drive. PBOT is urging people not to pass the road closed signs in the area.
“They are there for your safety,” PBOT stated. The closure is close to Council Crest Park in the West Hills. One resident tells KATU she was home with her dog when she heard the sound of the landslide outside. "He jumped around and everything when he heard this sound. And, you know, as I said, I looked around, but I didn't...I kind of thought it came from more that way. But I guess it kind of came down," she said.
The landslide follows several other recent reports of slide activity caused by the atmospheric river. PBOT and other city officials held a press conference Friday afternoon about the ongoing weather impacts, landslides, and public safety.
One of those landslides prompted an evacuation of a condo complex in Southwest Portland on Thursday. According to Portland Fire and Rescue, the rain-weakened cliff gave way, sending mud, trees and debris hurtling toward the building.Two other landslides that have occurred are at N. Interstate Street and N. Tillamook Avenue and SW 45th Drive, between SW Garden Home Road and SW Taylors Ferry Road, according to PBOT.
Outside of the metro, another landslide occurred along the Historic Columbia River Highway about two miles east of Corbett, between the Portland Women's Forum and Larch Mountain Road, ODOT said. ODOT said it does not know how long the closure will last, but it could continue at least into next week.
Just before 5 p.m. Friday, Multnomah County officials reported another landslide on NW Germantown Road, between NW Skyline Boulevard and NW Old Germantown Road. The extent of the landslide is unknown. Drivers are urged to avoid the area and seek alternate routes.

Landslide shuts down street in South Side Slopes

PITTSBURGH — A landslide shut down part of a street in South Side Slopes on Thursday.Emergency crews were called to Josephine Street near Salisbury Street for reports of a tree that had fallen across a roadway just before 8 p.m.
When the tree fell, it brought part of a hillside down onto the road with it.
Channel 11 spoke with two men who jumped in to help direct traffic before emergency crews arrived.“It’s just been a line of traffic out here. We got buses on both sides and the neighbors and everything just decided to come out. We got our lights. My roommate is down there with his vest and everything, just directing traffic and just trying to make some sense of this mayhem,” Ryan Mulrenin said.
Crews put barricades up to block off a stretch of Josephine Street closest to the hillside.
Traffic resumed flowing once those barricades were set up.

Over 100 people were killed in a landslide at a coltan mining site in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, local media said Wednesday.
The landslide took place on Tuesday at the Rubaya mining area in North Kivu following heavy rains, news portal Actuality reported, citing witnesses.
The victims were mostly artisanal miners who mined coltan.
The victims include miners, food vendors, and other small-scale traders, the report said, adding that excavation work to find those missing is underway in extremely difficult conditions, with rudimentary means.
The incident comes barely a month after another disaster hit at the same site in January, killing over 400 people, according to local media reports.
Provincial authorities have yet to make any official announcement on the incident, which took place roughly 70 kilometers (43 miles) west of the provincial capital Goma.
But the report, citing an artisanal miner who survived the accident, said a shaft began to collapse slowly and within seconds it covered many people.
Local media indicate that miners work without protective gear, and there are no engineers to gauge the solidity of the ground and warn miners of potential dangers.
The mining area, rich in minerals including coltan, cassiterite, gold and tourmaline, has been under the control of M23 rebels since 2024.
Following last month’s accident, the government denounced what it called the continued illegal exploitation of minerals at the site by rebels.
Despite an Angola-proposed ceasefire declared last month, effective Feb. 18, clashes have intensified in Congo’s North Kivu province, displacing thousands of people from their homes.

Death toll in Brazilian floods rises to 46 as rescuers continue search

About 3,600 residents have been displaced from the area, where emergency workers continue search operations.
“Our family is desperate,” Josiane Aparecida, a 43-year-old cook in Juiz de Fora, told the news service AFP.
She added that her aunt and cousin both died as a result of a landslide and that her cousin’s boyfriend and two children, ages six and nine, remain missing.
“We have hope, and yet we don’t, because it’s so difficult [to find them], and we’ve already lost two,” said Aparecida.
Torrential rains in southern Brazil have caused waterways to spill their banks and soil to become loosened on hillsides, sweeping away homes and engulfing dozens of people.

An 11-year-old boy named Bernardo Lopes Dutra was among those killed.
“It’s a tragedy that no one was expecting,” his father, Ricardo Dutra, said at the funeral, describing Bernardo as “a boy with a big heart who, in his own way, touched everyone around him”.
Firefighters have said that those still missing are unlikely to be found alive.
Periods of heavy rain frequently cause lethal floods in Brazil, where poorer communities and those in improvised structures often find themselves at higher risk.“We never had support from the public authorities to help us with anything,” Flavio Clemente Rodrigues, a resident of Juiz de Fora, told The Associated Press news agency.
Mayor Margarida Salomao of Juiz de Fora said that at least 20 landslides in the area have occurred since the rain began on Monday, and Brazilian meteorological authorities have warned that more rain is still expected in the coming days.
Scientists have said that climate change is increasing the severity and frequency of extreme weather events, including flooding. The South American nation of Peru also declared a state of emergency on Wednesday amid heavy rain and flooding in around half of the country’s districts.

SAN FRANCISCO, Agusan del Sur — Two children narrowly escaped death on Friday morning after a landslide buried their home in Sitio Sorex, Barangay Tambis of Barobo town in Surigao del Sur.
The incident occurred around 7:30 a.m., while the children were asleep.
Tambis village chief Renan Jillama Aben said in a social media post that the victims were rescued immediately after a search and rescue operation.
The first, a 17-year-old girl, sustained multiple fractures and was rushed to the hospital. The second, a 4-year-old child, suffered only minor injuries. Both are now in stable condition, Aben said.“The house was completely buried, but thanks to prompt action, both children were rescued unharmed,” Aben said.
He urged residents, especially those in mountainous, riverside, and flood-prone areas, to remain vigilant amid continuing heavy rains.
“Your safety is our priority. Stay alert, help each other, and follow local advisories,” he added.
