It is therefore logical that an increase in train derailments would accompany any increase in seismic activity – train tracks need to be straight and even the slightest shift to the side of a section of track would cause a train to derail. The area most affected by train derailments is the stretch zone.  Stretch zone quakes are silent, and people are generally unaware anything is happening, although signs such as booms and trumpet sounds can occur. This zone stretches from Western Europe across the Eurasian Plate, and also includes the South-East United States, the St. Lawrence Seaway, the Red Sea and the African Rift. In other parts of the world, shifting ground is more associated with earthquakes that people are aware of, such as the Pacific which is compressing, so authorities inspect railway tracks after any seismic activity, reducing the likelihood of accidents.

DORCHESTER CO., South Carolina — A portion of Highway 78 in Dorchester Co is shut down after a train derailed near the KION North America plant Saturday morning.

The sheriff’s office said deputies and first responders were called to 2450 West 5th North Street, or Highway 78.

Highway 78 has been shut down from Jedburg Road to Industrial Road.

A shelter-in-place went into effect for all residents within a mile and a half radius of the scene.

Residents are being asked to avoid the area and use alternate routes.

Officials say Highway 78 is expected to be closed for an extended period.

Multiple agencies respond to Union Pacific train derailment in West Orange

More than a dozen train cars have reportedly derailed in West Orange near Foreman Road and State Highway 87.

WEST ORANGE, Texas — Multiple agencies are responding to a train derailment in West Orange.

A Union Pacific train derailed late Friday night near Foreman Road and State Highway 87.

While it's unclear what caused the train cars to derail, more than a dozen cars appeared to be involved in the incident. Authorities are blocking off the roadway along Western Avenue and Foreman Road as they work the scene.

The West Orange Volunteer Fire Department, along with Orange fire, Orange County Emergency Service District 3, West Orange police, Pinehurst police and the Orange County Sheriff’s Office, is on the scene assisting with the derailment.

Meanwhile, West Orange VFD Assistant Chief Simmie Gibson III confirmed to 12News that there are no leaks at this time from the derailed cars.

SANTA BARBARA CO., California

Medical Emergency / Hard Railroad Closure – Gaviota Coast (Hwy 101 & Arroyo Quemada)

At 7:47 a.m., Santa Barbara County Fire responded to a medical emergency adjacent to the railroad tracks near Hwy 101 and Arroyo Quemada on the Gaviota Coast.

An excavator operator working on debris removal along storm-damaged tracks sustained minor injuries after a large erosion event caused the excavator to fall approximately 10 feet.

The operator self-extricated, climbed back up to the tracks, and was evaluated by fire crews on scene.

The adult male patient was transported by ground ambulance to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital with minor injuries.

Magdagachinsky District, Russia — 35 freight train cars have derailed on the Gonzha-Gudachi section of the Trans-Baikal Railway in Russia’s Amur region.

The incident occurred on January 5 in the Magdagachinsky municipal district. Authorities confirmed that railway infrastructure was damaged, but there is no threat to the environment, The Caspian Post reports via Russian media.  Emergency services are managing the situation and monitoring the site to prevent further disruptions.

Mexico: At least 13 people dead and 98 injured after train derailment with 250 people onboard earlier today in the southern state of Oaxaca.

Nizanda, Isthmus of Tehuantepec - Mexico

A passenger train derailment in southern Mexico left several people injured and others trapped on Sunday after a service carrying around 250 people came off the tracks near the town of Nizanda in the state of Oaxaca.

Federal authorities confirmed the incident occurred on a bridge along the Interoceanic Corridor of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec.

The train was carrying 241 passengers and 9 crew members at the time of the derailment.

The locomotive plunged into a ravine around 7 meters deep at kilometer Z-230+290, on a section of line heading toward the municipality of Matías Romero.

Officials have yet to release an official count of those injured or provide details on the severity of their injuries.

Emergency crews launched a complex rescue operation at the scene.

Due to a train derailment near the entrance of Pittock Conservation Area, there is an increased presence of heavy equipment and railway crews in the area.

Los Tigres, Mexico - During the early hours of Sunday, December 7, a strong railway incident was recorded in the Los Tigres congregation, in the municipality of Juan Rodríguez Clara after the locomotive and 7 wagons - 4 loaded with sand and 3 with liquid chlorine - derailed, generating a wide mobilization of emergency bodies.

The mishap occurred around 3:00 a.m., when the machine marked with the number 4432 abruptly went off the tracks, causing the hoppers to be lying down outside the railway line.

Despite the magnitude of the incident, none of the wagons carrying chlorine leaked, thus avoiding a high-risk situation for the population.

WALLER CO., Texas—The Waller Co Sheriff’s Office says 17 boxcars derailed Monday afternoon along Business 290 near James Muse Parkway. The cars appeared to be carrying gravel.

Old Houston Highway between Blinka Road and G-H Circle was temporarily closed after the incident.

Investigators are still working to determine what caused the derailment.
