"The causes of landslides are not a mystery to mankind. Layers of rock and soil such that rain running along a clay or rock layer can create a slippery surface for the weight of the layers above it is a common cause. A rock jumble from previous mountain building, broken or fractured rock easily dislodged. We have stated that the earthquakes man experiences between the periodic passages of Planet X can be considered aftershocks from the last passage, and this is true of landslides also. Mountain building rumples the landscape, so the land is not flat but has steep ravines and hill sides. Older mountain ranges are recognized for their rounded or smoothed appearance, because of frequent landslides distributing the rubble.

"As we approach another passage, another Pole Shift, the pace of landslides has picked up. Why would this be? Plates under pressure will put pressure on regions that contain rumpled hillsides and deep ravines, as these give more readily than strictly flat land, thus act as a weak link. In addition, due to the wobble, the weather has gotten more extreme, with drought and deluge increasing in extremes. Dry ground, suddenly flooded with rainwater needing to seek its level as runoff, will create internal water slides between the rock and soil layers that constitute the rumpled hillsides. Is there an early warning system that mankind could use? The trembles that soil about to slide emits could be detected, yes. These are not earthquakes, and have their own frequency. "

Landslide in eastern Congo kills at least 13, leaves over 30 missing

GOMA, Congo (AP) — A landslide in eastern Congo early Tuesday killed at least 13 people and left over 30 still missing, according to local authorities.

The landslide occurred at around 1 a.m. in the village of Burutsi in North Kivu province. Witnesses say that the landslide followed several hours of intense rainfall and has cut off the main road between the major city of Goma and the provincial capital, Walikale.

“Nature acted terribly, and the entire hillside collapsed into the village of Burutsi while ... people were asleep,” Descarte Akilimali, the sector chief of Burutsi area, told The Associated Press.

Local officials said that they had asked the government for assistance, but the closure of the road to Goma complicated the government’s ability to respond.

Eastern Congo has for decades been ripped apart by violence from government forces and different armed groups, including the Rwanda-backed M23, whose recent resurgence has escalated the conflict, worsening an already acute humanitarian crisis.

Earlier this year, M23 seized Goma and Bukavu, two key cities in eastern Congo, in a major escalation of the conflict.

Slide Keeps Highway 229 Closed For Years

Jan 11, 2026

Photo: ODOT

OR 229 remains closed between milepost 14 and 15, from Kernville to Siletz, following a large landslide that occurred on Dec. 12, 2025. The slide destroyed the road, and the highway remains closed to all traffic.

Water continues to be one of the biggest challenges at the site and is a key factor affecting the timeline to reopen the highway. Saturated ground conditions limit access and increase the risk of additional movement or new slides. The project team is looking at ways to help the area dry faster, but it's too early to know what options might work.

ODOT engineers and geotechnical experts continue to evaluate the site. There are still many unknowns, so it's too early to set a detailed timeline. Based on what is known right now, fully rebuilding OR 229 is expected to take years. The team will continue to assess over the winter months as conditions allow.

The landslide is extremely complex and moved in different ways. In some areas, large blocks of soil and rock shifted, while other sections turned into a muddy flow due to so much water. Because of ongoing instability and the potential for additional movement around the edges of the slide, the area remains unsafe to access on foot.

ODOT is working with experts to evaluate the full extent of the slide and develop potential options for how to move forward. The consultant will continue assessment work as conditions allow and is expected to outline possible approaches and timelines once more information can be gathered safely.

There is currently no local detour. ODOT has developed a long-term detour plan and is evaluating potential short-term solutions. Crews are in the process of completing detour signage. Once signage is in place, updated travel information will be shared and posted on TripCheck.com.

This closure has a significant impact on the community and travelers. Because this slide destroyed portions of the road and remains unstable, reopening OR 229 is not simply debris removal. It will require extensive investigation, design, funding and construction similar to building an entirely new road.

ODOT will continue to monitor conditions and provide updates as more information becomes available.

Landslide limits tourist access to Vista House

A landslide blocking westbound access to Vista House forced dozens of tourists to reroute Friday in the Columbia River Gorge.

COLUMBIA RIVER GORGE, Ore. (KPTV) - A landslide blocking westbound access to Vista House forced dozens of tourists to reroute Friday in the Columbia River Gorge.

Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) crews assessed damage from a landslide located on the Historic Columbia River Highway (U.S. 30) near Larch Mountain Road.

Crews work to restore power, repair downed power lines across Portland metro after Tuesday storm

The area has a history of landslides. Wildfire scars, including damage from the 2017 Eagle Creek Fire, combined with heavy rainfall have made slopes along the historic highway unpredictable.

In July, ODOT closed a portion of U.S. 30 west of Crown Point to vehicles, bicyclists, and pedestrians while crews repaired the “ancient landslide” area. The section reopened in September. ODOT officials said the current slide is between Vista House and the area repaired earlier this summer.

The closure has created an inconvenience for tourists. The roadway is frequently used to access Vista House from the west before continuing east toward Multnomah Falls.

“The scenic view — that’s what we came here for,” said Alexa Escamilla, who was visiting from White Salmon, Washington. “So I was kind of upset that we couldn’t go.”

Instead, visitors must take Interstate 84 eastbound and exit at Bridal Veil to reach Vista House, a detour that can add 25 to 30 minutes to the drive.

Jessica Wang, a first-time Oregon visitor from Beijing, said the additional travel time was no bother.

An ODOT spokesperson told FOX 12 there is no estimate for when the landslide will be cleared.

Nearly 50 miles of U.S. Highway 2 closed after flooding and mudslides

WSDOT says the stretch of highway will remain closed through the weekend.

 5:43 PM PST December 12, 2025

INDEX, Wash. — Nearly 50 miles of U.S. Highway 2 will remain closed through the weekend after flooding and mudslides washed out sections of the road across the Cascades, according to the Washington State Department of Transportation.

Viewer video shared with KING 5 shows large portions of Highway 2 no longer visible, with water and debris overtaking the roadway. A warning sign in Sultan alerts drivers that U.S. 2 beyond Skykomish is unusable.

WSDOT says the closure stretches from Skykomish to Leavenworth, between mileposts 50 and 99, due to water and debris covering the road in multiple locations. There is no estimated time to reopen.

Todd Brunner, a Skykomish resident, traveled east to meet KING 5 in Index. He said mudslides have impacted a long stretch of the highway.

“There are slides from Lake Wenatchee to Skykomish, all the way across — that is about 40 miles of road,” Brunner said.

WSDOT confirmed nearly 50 miles of Highway 2 will remain closed through the weekend, with plans to assess conditions again on Monday. Agency officials say ongoing water flow and large mudslides are preventing crews from fully accessing parts of the pass.

In areas near Index that have recently reopened, the Skykomish River remains swollen and fast-moving. Brunner pointed to the river’s color as evidence of the amount of debris being carried downstream.

“You can see by the color of it how much material — how much sand and gravel — is being washed and swept down,” he said.

Brunner said Skykomish residents have taken in stranded travelers before and may have to do so again this weekend.

“We’re used to being isolated a week at a time, so for residents it’s not a big deal,” Brunner said. “For travelers that get trapped, it is a big deal, and we had a couple dozen of those over the past couple of days.”

In a social media update, WSDOT said U.S. 97 over Blewett Pass and state Route 28 through Quincy are alternate routes. The agency also reported power outages in portions of Leavenworth and Chelan County, and said Village of Lights festivities in Leavenworth have been canceled this weekend as local crews focus on road conditions and community impacts.

Oregon Highway 229 is expected to remain closed for “several days” following a large landslide on Friday.

The landslide occurred between mileposts 14 and 15, between milepost 14 and 15, between Kernville and Siletz. The slide took out a large portion of the highway, ODOT said.

Crews flew a drone over the area Friday to get a better idea of the extent of the damage.

Five homes were located in the area of the landslide. Three of those homes sustained “substantial” damage during the event, according to ODOT. All residents in the area have been accounted for and safely evacuated, ODOT said.

The landslide occurred after several days of heavy rain and high water, brought on by a passing “atmospheric river” winter storm.

This latest incident is just one of several that ODOT crews have responded to since the storm struck the state, including emergency repairs to a sunken grade area near milepost 9 on Highway 229 on Wednesday, ODOT said.

It is unclear exactly how long the highway will remain closed.

“ODOT geotechnical crews will need time to assess the slope and determine next steps before a timeline can be established,” a department spokesperson said, in part, in an updated statement about the landslide.

According to ODOT, there is no detour available. Drivers should avoid the area and plan alternate routes.

This is a developing story. Check back with KATU for updates.
