The fire broke out around 5:40 pm on November 18, 2025 in the Saganoseki district of Oita City, located about 770 km southwest of Tokyo. Over 170 buildings were reduced to ashes, including homes and shops, devastating an entire neighborhood. 175 residents evacuated to emergency shelters as the flames spread rapidly through the hilly coastal town. Firefighters battled the blaze overnight, assisted by military and firefighting helicopters dropping water. Strong winds worsened the situation, spreading flames to forested slopes and even an uninhabited island offshore. The Fire and Disaster Management Agency confirmed this was Japan's largest urban fire in nearly half a century, surpassing most modern disaster records. The cause of the fire has not been identified.

Hong Kong firefighters were scouring scorched high-rises Thursday for over 250 people listed as missing, a day after the financial hub's worst blaze in decades killed at least 55 in an apartment complex. Over 24 hours after fire broke out in the eight-building housing estate with 2,000 units, flames were still visible in some windows as crews sprayed water on the blackened exteriors. NASA's Terra and Aqua satellites detect active wildfires twice each day. Scientists studied this data over a 21-year span and found that extreme wildfires have become more frequent, more intense, and larger. The largest increase in extreme fire behavior was in the temperate conifer forests of the Western U.S. and the boreal forests of northern North America and Russia. Warmer nighttime temperatures are a major contributing factor, allowing fire activity to persist overnight.

More than 100 firefighters battled a massive five-alarm fire Friday evening in Denver at an apartment building construction site -- about the size of a city block -- working for hours to keep the flames from spreading to nearby structures, officials said.

One firefighter was injured battling the fire and taken to the hospital, the Denver Fire Department told ABC News.

There were no other injuries immediately reported.

The fire spurred evacuation orders for nearby residents.

By late evening, the fire was largely under control but not fully extinguished. Officials estimated the blaze was about 70% contained, with pockets of deep-seated fire still burning inside the structure. Firefighters were expected to remain on scene through the night to fully suppress hot spots.

The building, which was in the early to mid-stages of construction, was primarily made of wood, with some plastic materials used in wrapping and construction.

There's no word yet on the cause of the blaze.

A massive blaze tore through Custom House Wharf in Portland, Maine, late Friday afternoon. By the time firefighters arrived, the fire had already built significant momentum, fueled by the dense layout of old waterfront buildings. Crews worked for more than two hours and managed to contain the flames by 7:22 PM.

NYC, New York — BREAKING: MASSIVE 4-ALARM FIRE TEARS THROUGH UPPER WEST SIDE BUILDING

Flames engulfed the top floor of a 6-story apartment building at 201 W 107th Street in Manhattan this morning, raining debris onto sidewalks and sending thick smoke across the city.

Part of the roof collapsed, and a parapet wall came crashing down near FDNY crews. Officials declared the site a collapse zone.  At least 4 people, including a firefighter, suffered minor injuries. All are expected to recover.

New South Wales (NSW), Australia is currently experiencing severe bushfires, with dozens of blazes across the state, multiple homes destroyed, and at least one firefighter tragically killed. Authorities have declared natural disasters in several regions as conditions remain dangerous. Dec. 12, 2025

ROSWELL, New Mexico — A major fire broke out late Thursday at the Roswell Air Center, just south of the legendary Hangar 84, a site long tied to the infamous 1947 UFO crash. 

Fire crews rushed to the scene after the blaze was reported around 7:55pm local time on East Earl Cummings Loop.

Authorities initially feared the fire could trigger a dangerous explosion due to hazardous materials and oxygen bottles stored nearby, prompting an expanded safety perimeter and rapid evacuation of nearby facilities.

Roswell firefighters worked quickly to contain the flames, declaring the fire under control by 9:45pm Thursday. What caused the fire is currently unknown.

At this time, no injuries have been reported, and officials have not confirmed the cause of the fire or whether any historically significant objects were affected.
