The Nibiru cataclysm is a supposed disastrous encounter between Earth and a large planetary object (either a collision or a near-miss) that certain groups believed would take place in the early 21st century. Believers in this doomsday event usually refer to this object as Nibiru or Planet X. The idea was first put forward in 1995 by Nancy Lieder, founder of the website ZetaTalk. Lieder claims she is a contactee with the ability to receive messages from extraterrestrials from the Zeta Reticuli star system through an implant in her brain. She states that she was chosen to warn mankind that the object would sweep through the inner Solar System in May 2003 (though that date was later postponed) causing Earth to undergo a physical pole shift that would destroy most of humanity.

Space agency activates its largest planetary defense drill as interstellar visitor approaches Earth

The mysterious interstellar object 3I/ATLAS is just days away from its closest approach to Earth, triggering a major planetary defense drill.

The European Space Agency (ESA), NASA, and more than 23 nations have launched the largest drill in history which will run through January 2026, using the suspected comet's harmless passage through the solar system as a test for tracking future threats from space.

3I/ATLAS is expected to come within 170million miles of Earth on Friday, and space agency officials have said there is no risk of a potential collision with the interstellar object. However, this relatively short distance from our planet (roughly twice the distance between the Earth and the sun) is being used to sharpen the detection of high-velocity near-Earth objects (NEOs) that could one day impact the planet.

ESA detailed in its 2025 budget proposal that there are several space threats that humanity needs to track, each of which could destroy cities or even threaten extinction if not stopped in time.

'Hazards originating in space carry the risk of sudden disaster and potentially derailing everyday life, from natural threats like asteroids and solar storms to the human-made one of space debris,' ESA wrote in a statement.

Since late November, ESA's planetary defense team has been refining its predictions by pooling data from telescopes in Hawaii, Chile, and Australia with observations from the Mars Express, ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter, and Juice probes in space.

NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) and its HiRISE camera have also joined the massive global effort.

At the heart of their plans, space agency officials said that Earth needs an asteroid deflection system, meaning a way of shifting the course or destroying space rocks projected to hit our world.

For any insect to evolve as a large specimen on Earth would require a protected environment where none of the other Earth creatures could discover it.
