WARSAW, Poland (AP) — A pre-World War II apartment house collapsed Saturday in southwestern Poland, leaving five people dead, four injured and one missing, authorities said.
Scores of firefighters with dogs were searching the rubble of the building in the town of Swiebodzice (Shvyeh-'boh-tchi-tseh), according to Daniel Mucha, regional spokesman for the firefighters. He said the collapse of two floors of the three-floor building might have been caused by a gas explosion.
Regional governor Pawel Hreniak said the search-and-rescue operation was expected to continue through Sunday.
He confirmed five fatalities, including two school-age children.
Still, firefighters looking for one more missing person said there were no sounds yet coming from the building's bricks and broken wood.
Prime Minister Beata Szydlo was heading to the site, 420 kilometers (250 miles) southwest of Warsaw, to be with the victims and the rescue workers.
The governor of Swiebodzice, Bogdan Kozuchowicz, said the pre-World War II building was recently renovated and had been in good technical condition.
The injured were taken to hospitals in Swiebodzice and in Wroclaw. One survivor, identified only by her first name Stanislawa, told TVN24 that she was "miraculously saved."
"I was in the kitchen and suddenly it was dark and full of debris and some broken wooden planks," she said from her hospital bed in Swiebodzice. "I got on top of those planks and started calling 'Help! Help!' Two firefighters came and pulled me out by the arm."
She said her husband was resting on the bed at the time of the collapse.
"I don't know what has happened to him," she said, her voice trembling.
With her teenage son, also a survivor, at her side, she said the family had lost everything.

The canal that supplies water to the 100-kW Budum Rivulet Micro Hydropower project in Nepal has collapsed, news agencies are reporting.
The project, at Gudel of Mahakulung rural municipality in the Solukhumbu district, began operating in 2015.
It is reported that a 30-meter-long section of the canal collapsed and will take a minimum of one month to repair. More than 750 households have lost electricity as a result of the collapse.

We have described a time preceding the last weeks when emergency management teams would be exhausted, turning a deaf ear in countries like the US and Britain to cries of "terrorism" and a need to install martial law. What could cause such a state, worldwide? Earthquakes have increased in frequency and strength, and accidents in the stretch zones are increasing because the plates have loosened up and are moving a greater distance during each adjustment. The recent breaks in Internet cables around the Arabian Plate are a case in point. Where earthquakes of lower magnitude are registered and often felt, when they increase in size to a magnitude 6 or 7 or greater, infrastructure is destroyed.
What will it be like when earthquakes are happening to most cities around the world, simultaneously? Stretch zones will experience even more destruction, as the infrastructure will be pulled apart. Gas mains will explode into holocausts. Travel will become impossible when roadways are torn apart or heaved up. And the increasingly volatile atmosphere, jerked about by the wobble, will make air travel treacherous. Where faltering on occasion now, satellites will falter increasingly, making communications difficult. All this leads to panic, so that distracted workers cause malfunctions in services. This can be expected before the last weeks arrive.

TRAFFIC has been seriously disrupted in Newcastle West following the collapse of a wall at the Bridge of Tears early this Monday morning.
A large section of the left side of the 19th century bridge fell into the river after being damaged by a vehicle.
The bridge is now closed to outbound traffic. Instead traffic heading for Charleville, Broadford, Dromcollogher and Castlemahon will be diverted from the roundabout to the next left-hand junction where they double back along the R522 , at the rear of the Longcourt House Hotel, to the roundabout at Rathina.
However, incoming traffic will not be affected and can cross the new bridge constructed alongside the Bridge of Tears as normal.
Diversions will be clearly signposted, a spokesman for Limerick City and County Council said, adding that the council "regrets any inconvenience caused."
“It is completely gone. The whole left side of the bridge is gone into the river,” said Cllr Michael Collins who posted a photo on social media. It will be a serious job to repair it, he added.
The bridge predates the Famine, according to Cllr Jerome Scanlan, and got its name as it was where emigrants left their friends and family before heading out on the old Cork Road to Cobh (Queenstown) and the emigrant ships.
“It is sad to see the history and heritage disappear into the river,” he said.

A woman claims she felt a footbridge moving under her before she narrowly escaped its collapse.
Julie Powell, 34, was walking home with her dog when she noticed the strength of the current at Millmead Lock, Shalford, Surrey.
She began filming to show her husband, before having to run from Guildford's Millmead Lock footbridge as it collapsed into the River Wey, Surrey Live reports.
The incident happened at around 2.45pm on Saturday, November 2.
The river level has dropped significantly since the bridge's collapse.
Local authorities, firefighters and police were at the scene in the evening to cordon the area off from the public.
Mrs Powell said: “I was walking back home with my dog and started filming on the bridge because I could see the water and the current was really strong.
“I was focusing on the video on my phone and then I felt the bridge moving under my feet.
“I walk this way often and the current on the left of the bridge seemed really unusual.
"I wanted to take a video to show my husband, but then it all happened really quickly and suddenly it fell. My dog ran off to my right and first alerted me.
“It was scary. It is fine now, but you do think about what might have happened.”
The video shows just how close her escape was as she turns to see the bridge crumble into the river.

CHIKKAMAGALURU: A biker had a narrow escape after the Malinganadu bridge, Mudigere taluk, collapsed following heavy rains, at 10 am on Monday. The area has been experiencing heavy rains since Sunday evening.
The biker, Tamminakudige Pradeep, sustained serious injuries owing to the fall.Pradeep was given first aid at Kalasa Hospital and then shifted to a private hospital in Mangaluru for further treatment.
The bridge is situated on the Koove-Hirebail connect road linking Aramane Talaguru, Bilagali Malinganadu, Taminakodige, Hemmakki, Idakani, Neranki and other villages. Following the collapse of the bridge, the villages have lost connectivity to the outside world.
Revenue officer Mahesh, Village Accountant Girish , PWD EE Manjunath visited the spot on Monday and studied the situation.
Manjunath later said that the process of constructing a temporary bridge in the adjoining coffee estate after convincing the owner has commenced. For the construction of a permanent bridge, a proposal will be submitted to the government, he said.

A towering arch bridge over a bay in eastern Taiwan has collapsed, sending a burning oil tanker truck falling on to boats in the water below.
An air force helicopter, fishing vessels and more than 60 military personnel including divers are searching for possible victims.
Six people, all foreigners, are missing and believed trapped on one of the fishing boats, the National Fire Agency said.
Interior minister Hsu Kuo-yung told reporters that five people were feared to have been on the bridge when it collapsed. Ten people were taken to hospital, six of them with serious injuries.
The 460ft-long bridge collapsed in Nanfangao, a tiny but often-crowded Pacific coast fishing village.

When that happened, it also damaged one of the water mains and Irish Water say that there are now interruptions to the supply around Ardattin, Ballynoe, Knocknatubrid and the surrounds.
Local councillor, John Murphy has been down to see the damage this afternoon:
“The workers are there at the moment and hopefully the water [supply] will be back to houses that are cut off in the next couple of hours.
“There’s not a massive amount of damage. If it was on the bridge it would be a much bigger problem but it’s not.
“It’s between the bridge and the entrance into a private house. It’ll take a bit of work but it’s not something that can’t be repaired.”
Meanwhile, in Kilkenny the Bleach Road is once again flooded.
Local Gardaí say it’s impassable at the moment.

Authorities are now seeking to create an alternative route to facilitate motor-vehicle traffic after the bridge at Hampstead collapsed on Tuesday.
According to information reaching Dominica News Online (DNO), structural damage to the bridge has made it impassable to vehicular traffic. DNO understands that a temporary by-pass has been created for pedestrians.
Meanwhile, motorists are being urged to proceed with caution in the area.
DNO contacted the Public Works Ministry but we we were unable to obtain any official information about the incident.

DURHAMVILLE N.Y. — State and county officials in Oneida County have closed off a bridge over the Erie Canal due to “an imminent bridge collapse.”
The bridge in Durhamville, a hamlet in Oneida County east of Sylvan Beach, is on Higginsville Rd. It's also called County Road 50A. The NYS DOT says the bridge had been under construction since June, but something shifted Thursday and they believe the bridge could collapse at any time.
According to a post on Facebook from the Oneida County Sheriff’s Office, the NYS Department of Transportation and Canal Corp asked them for help making sure boats do not go under the bridge.
Oneida County Marine Patrol and the Sylvan Beach Fire Department shut down canal traffic. They say all boaters should stay away from this area until it is deemed safe.
