WARSAW, Poland (AP) — A pre-World War II apartment house collapsed Saturday in southwestern Poland, leaving five people dead, four injured and one missing, authorities said.
Scores of firefighters with dogs were searching the rubble of the building in the town of Swiebodzice (Shvyeh-'boh-tchi-tseh), according to Daniel Mucha, regional spokesman for the firefighters. He said the collapse of two floors of the three-floor building might have been caused by a gas explosion.
Regional governor Pawel Hreniak said the search-and-rescue operation was expected to continue through Sunday.
He confirmed five fatalities, including two school-age children.
Still, firefighters looking for one more missing person said there were no sounds yet coming from the building's bricks and broken wood.
Prime Minister Beata Szydlo was heading to the site, 420 kilometers (250 miles) southwest of Warsaw, to be with the victims and the rescue workers.
The governor of Swiebodzice, Bogdan Kozuchowicz, said the pre-World War II building was recently renovated and had been in good technical condition.
The injured were taken to hospitals in Swiebodzice and in Wroclaw. One survivor, identified only by her first name Stanislawa, told TVN24 that she was "miraculously saved."
"I was in the kitchen and suddenly it was dark and full of debris and some broken wooden planks," she said from her hospital bed in Swiebodzice. "I got on top of those planks and started calling 'Help! Help!' Two firefighters came and pulled me out by the arm."
She said her husband was resting on the bed at the time of the collapse.
"I don't know what has happened to him," she said, her voice trembling.
With her teenage son, also a survivor, at her side, she said the family had lost everything.

The project, at Gudel of Mahakulung rural municipality in the Solukhumbu district, began operating in 2015.
It is reported that a 30-meter-long section of the canal collapsed and will take a minimum of one month to repair. More than 750 households have lost electricity as a result of the collapse.
THE STRETCH ZONE, THAT SINKING FEELING
http://www.zetatalk.com/index/blog1010.htm
We have described a time preceding the last weeks when emergency management teams would be exhausted, turning a deaf ear in countries like the US and Britain to cries of "terrorism" and a need to install martial law. What could cause such a state, worldwide? Earthquakes have increased in frequency and strength, and accidents in the stretch zones are increasing because the plates have loosened up and are moving a greater distance during each adjustment. The recent breaks in Internet cables around the Arabian Plate are a case in point. Where earthquakes of lower magnitude are registered and often felt, when they increase in size to a magnitude 6 or 7 or greater, infrastructure is destroyed.
What will it be like when earthquakes are happening to most cities around the world, simultaneously? Stretch zones will experience even more destruction, as the infrastructure will be pulled apart. Gas mains will explode into holocausts. Travel will become impossible when roadways are torn apart or heaved up. And the increasingly volatile atmosphere, jerked about by the wobble, will make air travel treacherous. Where faltering on occasion now, satellites will falter increasingly, making communications difficult. All this leads to panic, so that distracted workers cause malfunctions in services. This can be expected before the last weeks arrive.

Russia: Car plunges into hole as bridge collapses in front of it – but the driver escapes unhurt
by internewscast12th May 2020
A bridge crumbled away just yards ahead of a moving car leaving the vehicle trapped in a hole.
The driver miraculously got away unscathed in the incident in Primorye, Russia, last month that was captured on dashcam footage.
A large truck driving in front of Karina Bertnikova’s car went over a crack in the road, causing the tarmac to crumble away in its wake.

Driver Karina Bertnikova miraculously got away unscathed in the incident last month but her car was left trapped at least five-feet below the surface of the road
In the shocking clip, Ms Bertnikova’s car can be seen following the much-larger vehicle as they both cross the bridge.
The truck appears to go over an already-visible crack in the tarmac. The weight of it causes a massive piece of the bridge to collapse.
But it’s too late for Ms Bertnikova to stop and she – with an audible cry – falls straight into the hole.

MILAN (Reuters) - A bridge on a normally busy road in northern Italy collapsed on Wednesday but only two drivers were caught up in the chaos, the fire brigade said, as the coronavirus lockdown has largely halted traffic.
A spokesman for the fire brigade said the 260 metre bridge near the town of Aulla, roughly midway between Genoa and Florence, in the northern tip of Tuscany, collapsed at 10:25 a.m. (0825 GMT).
The lockdown imposed by the government to cope with the coronavirus emergency has cut traffic in the whole country, including on the road, known as the SS330.
A team of the fire brigade were still on site, the spokesman added. Two drivers were taken to hospital with minor injuries, he added.
The bridge was previously managed by provincial authorities and was then put under the management of ANAS, a company controlled by state-owned railway group Ferrovie dello Stato.
Transport Minister Paola De Micheli said that she had requested ANAS provide a detailed report.

A series of storms in recent weeks that have caused damaging flooding and landslides in the United Kingdom are being blamed for the collapse of a bridge at a national park.
The Mountain Rescue Team (MRT) in Brecon Beacons National Park, located in Wales, said Wednesday that recent storms had caused a bridge to collapse in the Sarn Helen area.
In a photo shared by the rescue team, a large hole can be seen in the bridge with water flowing underneath.
“It is related to the recent floods,” a spokesperson for the rescue team told Wales Online.
The bridge is located on a route that’s a former old Roman road called Sarn Helen, according to the news outlet.

Bridge closed after collapse of a structural component
February 10, 2020 at 6:07 pm
LOWELL — Inspectors from the Massachusetts Department of Transportation ordered the closure of the Pawtuckett Street Bridge to cars after the collapse of an 80-foot concrete strip, according to a press release from the city.
The city is waiting for a full report but the bridge is expected to remain closed for the “foreseeable future.” Residents are advised to use Walker, Broadway and School streets as a detour.
The bridge was closed Monday morning immediately after the collapse. State inspectors called to the bridge found “several additional structural deficiencies” and ordered it closed, according to the press release. It will remain open to pedestrians. No one was injured.
The bridge has been closed to eastbound traffic since May 2019 as part of an ongoing construction project. It is one of six canal bridges being replaced in the city. The project was expected to be completed in April 2022, according to the city’s website
In July, the Beaver Brook Bridge on Beaver Street was also closed to cars following a MassDOT inspection.

Campers rescued after bridge washes out north of Fort McMurray
60 campers stranded on north bank of overflowing Firebag River
CBC News · Posted: Jun 16, 2013 3:59 PM MT
The final group of 60 campers stranded after a bridge washed out in northern Alberta have been rescued.
Workers used power line poles as a makeshift bridge to help people cross the Firebag River, about 100 kilometres northeast of Fort McMurray.
Twenty-five people were able to drive their quads across the temporary bridge Sunday night and get home.
The Firebag River Bridge collapsed Saturday night, leaving several groups of campers and researchers caught on the wrong side.
The bridge washed out due to all the heavy rain the area.
Environment officials say the power poles bridge is only temporary and the river bank will continue to erode.
They are asking backcountry campers to stay on the south side of the river, or to go back to Fort McMurray.
Meanwhile, residents in Fort McMurray are feeling some relief as the final mandatory evacuation notice has been lifted, allowing residents of the Ptarmigan Court Trailer Park to return home.
There had been some worries about flooding in that area due to a beaver dam that was channeling water towards the trailer park.
However, some residents in the trailer park told CBC's Kristina Partsinevelos that they never left home as they didn't believe that flooding around the area was an imminent threat.
