Building collapses in Poland: 5 killed, 4 injured, 1 missing

WARSAW, Poland (AP) — A pre-World War II apartment house collapsed Saturday in southwestern Poland, leaving five people dead, four injured and one missing, authorities said.

Scores of firefighters with dogs were searching the rubble of the building in the town of Swiebodzice (Shvyeh-'boh-tchi-tseh), according to Daniel Mucha, regional spokesman for the firefighters. He said the collapse of two floors of the three-floor building might have been caused by a gas explosion.

Regional governor Pawel Hreniak said the search-and-rescue operation was expected to continue through Sunday.

He confirmed five fatalities, including two school-age children.

Still, firefighters looking for one more missing person said there were no sounds yet coming from the building's bricks and broken wood.

Prime Minister Beata Szydlo was heading to the site, 420 kilometers (250 miles) southwest of Warsaw, to be with the victims and the rescue workers.

The governor of Swiebodzice, Bogdan Kozuchowicz, said the pre-World War II building was recently renovated and had been in good technical condition.

The injured were taken to hospitals in Swiebodzice and in Wroclaw. One survivor, identified only by her first name Stanislawa, told TVN24 that she was "miraculously saved."

"I was in the kitchen and suddenly it was dark and full of debris and some broken wooden planks," she said from her hospital bed in Swiebodzice. "I got on top of those planks and started calling 'Help! Help!' Two firefighters came and pulled me out by the arm."

She said her husband was resting on the bed at the time of the collapse.

"I don't know what has happened to him," she said, her voice trembling.

With her teenage son, also a survivor, at her side, she said the family had lost everything.

Tunnel collapse knocks Nepal’s 100-kW Budum Rivulet Micro Hydropower offline

04/06/2017

The canal that supplies water to the 100-kW Budum Rivulet Micro Hydropower project in Nepal has collapsed, news agencies are reporting.

The project, at Gudel of Mahakulung rural municipality in the Solukhumbu district, began operating in 2015.

It is reported that a 30-meter-long section of the canal collapsed and will take a minimum of one month to repair. More than 750 households have lost electricity as a result of the collapse.

THE STRETCH ZONE, THAT SINKING FEELING

http://www.zetatalk.com/index/blog1010.htm

We have described a time preceding the last weeks when emergency management teams would be exhausted, turning a deaf ear in countries like the US and Britain to cries of "terrorism" and a need to install martial law. What could cause such a state, worldwide? Earthquakes have increased in frequency and strength, and accidents in the stretch zones are increasing because the plates have loosened up and are moving a greater distance during each adjustment. The recent breaks in Internet cables around the Arabian Plate are a case in point. Where earthquakes of lower magnitude are registered and often felt, when they increase in size to a magnitude 6 or 7 or greater, infrastructure is destroyed.

What will it be like when earthquakes are happening to most cities around the world, simultaneously? Stretch zones will experience even more destruction, as the infrastructure will be pulled apart. Gas mains will explode into holocausts. Travel will become impossible when roadways are torn apart or heaved up. And the increasingly volatile atmosphere, jerked about by the wobble, will make air travel treacherous. Where faltering on occasion now, satellites will falter increasingly, making communications difficult. All this leads to panic, so that distracted workers cause malfunctions in services. This can be expected before the last weeks arrive.

Egypt evacuates toppling 13-floor building in Alexandria

June 1, 2017
2:37 pm

The Egyptian authorities evacuated a 13-floor building in eastern Alexandria in the early hours of Wednesday morning after it toppled over to lean on the building opposite.

Civil protection personnel went to the scene and found the newly-constructed building in Azarita. They immediately cut natural gas and electricity to the building and evacuated the tenants.

The authorities cordoned off the area around the collapsing building as a precautionary procedure in the case that it collapses further.

Alexandria Governor Mohamed Sultan said Thursday that all buildings adjacent to the collapsing building have been evacuated. The Alexandria tramway network in this area has been halted to prevent vibrations that may cause the building to disintegrate.

Sultan said in press statement that all necessary measures have been taken to provide emergency housing for the evacuees; there is coordination with the Social Solidarity Ministry to fulfill all their needs.

He explained that investigations have begun to find the cause of the collapse, stressing that all perpetrators and those responsible for the incident will be held accountable and referred to trial promptly.

Sultan said he immediately formed a committee comprised of representatives from the Engineering School, the Armed Forces and the Arab Contractors Company to intervene immediately and discuss the appropriate solution to demolish the building.

UPDATE: One dead, washed out road cuts off Iowa, Wisconsin crossing

Washed out road forces lengthy detour

LANSING, Iowa (KCRG-TV9) -- Iowa and Wisconsin authorities have closed access to a Mississippi River bridge because of a roadway washout on the Wisconsin side that led to a fatal crash.

This is the hole left in Highway 82 between Lansing and Wisconsin. The Crawford County Sheriff's Office says high water eroded the roadway, and a car fell into the hole, killing the driver.

Crawford County (Wisconsin) Sheriff Dale McCullick says another driver witnessed the washout and the accident around 4:20 a.m. Tuesday on Iowa Highway 82, which runs to the Black Hawk Bridge over to Lansing, Iowa. Water completely covered the vehicle.

Crews removed the body of 59-year-old James Walleser of Lansing around 8:30 a.m. The Crawford County Sheriff's Office says Walleser was driving to work when it happened.

McCullich told La Crosse, Wisconsin, station WXOW the washout hole was around 10 feet (3 meters) deep. He hopes the highway can be reopened by the weekend.

The Mississippi River has experienced high river levels in recent days. The Sheriff's Office says the highway appeared to have been undercut due to the high water, which caused the road to erode and fall into the river.

Motorists who want to cross can go north to La Crescent, Minnesota, opposite La Crosse, Wisconsin, or south to Marquette, Iowa, opposite Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin.

Crews with the Crawford County Highway Department are now fixing the roadway.

May 18, 2017

EAST JORDAN — Four construction workers were injured, some possibly seriously, in an accident at a construction site near East Jordan today, Thursday.

Around 11 a.m., crews from the East Jordan Fire Department, Jordan Valley EMS, East Jordan Police Department and Charlevoix County Sheriff's Office responded to a report of a building collapse at 06710 M-32, just south of the East Jordan city limits in South Arm Township.

The project is a 60-foot by 120-foot addition to the former VFW post building that is part of a plan by Crossroads Resale shop to relocate and expand its operation from it's current location in the city, Charlevoix County Sheriff Chuck Vondra said.

Vondra said the accident happened as the Gaylord-based construction company heading up the project was placing trusses on top of the new stud walls when a gust of wind caused the trusses to give way.

Four construction crew members were on top of 10 foot walls when the trusses collapsed causing them to fall 10-12 feet and become trapped. Continues...................

Wall falls onto guests taking shelter in India, killing 22

Originally published May 10, 2017 at 6:13 pm

NEW DELHI (AP) — A building wall collapsed onto guests at a wedding in western India, killing at least 22 people, police said Thursday.

The hundreds of guests were having dinner or assembling on the outdoor lawns when a strong dust storm blew into the area Wednesday night, forcing people on the lawns to go indoors. Then the 80-feet-long (32-meters-long) wall collapsed onto people inside the wedding hall, Bharatpur District Magistrate N.K. Gupta told reporters.

Another 28 people were injured and have been hospitalized, police officer Anil Tank told Press Trust of India.

The district is in Rajasthan state nearly 200 kilometers (125 miles) south of New Delhi.

A power outage hampered rescue work. It wasn’t clear if the dust storm was a factor in the collapse.

Building collapses are common in India, where high demand for housing and lax regulations have encouraged some builders to cut corners, use substandard materials or add unauthorized extra floors.

In 2013, a building being constructed illegally in Mumbai caved in, killing 74 people in the country’s worst building collapse in decades.

Walkway collapses at Attleboro apartment complex

NBC 10 NEWS

A pedestrian bridge used by tenants of an Attleboro apartment complex collapsed.

The walkway fell into the Ten Mile River at about 5:30 p.m. Sunday.

The part of the bridge that carries cars is still standing, but the entire bridge has been closed as a precaution, according to Bill McDonough, the city’s building inspector.

The privately-owned bridge sits on the property of the Hebron Village Apartments on Read Street, a converted mill.

Police Chief Kyle Heagney said cars and trucks use the bridge to get to a parking lot.

For now, tenants will have to park in the building's other lot or on the street while they wait for a bridge to be constructed.

There were no reports of injuries.

NBC 10 called the management company, Wingate Companies, to find out when the bridge was last inspected but the station hasn’t heard back.

Another road collapse — this time in the Laurentians

There's yet another road collapse because of the strange spring weather we've been seeing — this time, in the community of Mille Isles, near Joliette.

A CJAD 800 listener, Tyler Ward, sent us a photo of a car sitting on top of a partially collapsed stretch of road — the main road through the Laurentian town.

The accident apparently happened overnight. No one was hurt, but by Tuesday afternoon, the car still hasn't been towed away, because of the instability of the ground.

The Chemin des Mille-Isles is closed indefinitely in both directions.

This appears to be the latest in a string of road collapses throughout the province, apparently caused my excess soil moisture, during this especially wet spring.
