Building collapses in Poland: 5 killed, 4 injured, 1 missing

WARSAW, Poland (AP) — A pre-World War II apartment house collapsed Saturday in southwestern Poland, leaving five people dead, four injured and one missing, authorities said.

Scores of firefighters with dogs were searching the rubble of the building in the town of Swiebodzice (Shvyeh-'boh-tchi-tseh), according to Daniel Mucha, regional spokesman for the firefighters. He said the collapse of two floors of the three-floor building might have been caused by a gas explosion.

Regional governor Pawel Hreniak said the search-and-rescue operation was expected to continue through Sunday.

He confirmed five fatalities, including two school-age children.

Still, firefighters looking for one more missing person said there were no sounds yet coming from the building's bricks and broken wood.

Prime Minister Beata Szydlo was heading to the site, 420 kilometers (250 miles) southwest of Warsaw, to be with the victims and the rescue workers.

The governor of Swiebodzice, Bogdan Kozuchowicz, said the pre-World War II building was recently renovated and had been in good technical condition.

The injured were taken to hospitals in Swiebodzice and in Wroclaw. One survivor, identified only by her first name Stanislawa, told TVN24 that she was "miraculously saved."

"I was in the kitchen and suddenly it was dark and full of debris and some broken wooden planks," she said from her hospital bed in Swiebodzice. "I got on top of those planks and started calling 'Help! Help!' Two firefighters came and pulled me out by the arm."

She said her husband was resting on the bed at the time of the collapse.

"I don't know what has happened to him," she said, her voice trembling.

With her teenage son, also a survivor, at her side, she said the family had lost everything.

Tunnel collapse knocks Nepal’s 100-kW Budum Rivulet Micro Hydropower offline

04/06/2017

The canal that supplies water to the 100-kW Budum Rivulet Micro Hydropower project in Nepal has collapsed, news agencies are reporting.

The project, at Gudel of Mahakulung rural municipality in the Solukhumbu district, began operating in 2015.

It is reported that a 30-meter-long section of the canal collapsed and will take a minimum of one month to repair. More than 750 households have lost electricity as a result of the collapse.

THE STRETCH ZONE, THAT SINKING FEELING

http://www.zetatalk.com/index/blog1010.htm

We have described a time preceding the last weeks when emergency management teams would be exhausted, turning a deaf ear in countries like the US and Britain to cries of "terrorism" and a need to install martial law. What could cause such a state, worldwide? Earthquakes have increased in frequency and strength, and accidents in the stretch zones are increasing because the plates have loosened up and are moving a greater distance during each adjustment. The recent breaks in Internet cables around the Arabian Plate are a case in point. Where earthquakes of lower magnitude are registered and often felt, when they increase in size to a magnitude 6 or 7 or greater, infrastructure is destroyed.

What will it be like when earthquakes are happening to most cities around the world, simultaneously? Stretch zones will experience even more destruction, as the infrastructure will be pulled apart. Gas mains will explode into holocausts. Travel will become impossible when roadways are torn apart or heaved up. And the increasingly volatile atmosphere, jerked about by the wobble, will make air travel treacherous. Where faltering on occasion now, satellites will falter increasingly, making communications difficult. All this leads to panic, so that distracted workers cause malfunctions in services. This can be expected before the last weeks arrive.

Major Road Collapses In Akwa Ibom After Heavy Rainfall.

Tuesday, 20 June 2017 at 09:29 PM

The Akwa Ibom State Government has announced the immediate shutdown of Hospital Road, at Midim, in Abak Local Government Area for urgent intervention and rehabilitation. Commissioner for Works, Mr Ephraim Inyang-Eyen gave the order when he paid an unscheduled visit to inspect the road which has collapsed to the pressures of a devastating gully erosion by the Obot Street intersection.

The Works Commissioner who conveyed the concern of Governor Udom Emmanuel to the residents of Abak in general and Midim village in particular, expressed worry that, the extent of damage is an existential threat to the inhabitants of the area and their property.

He blamed the collapse on poor drainage system, harping that, this is reason Governor Udom Emmanuel has directed that no road constructed under his watch will be done without requisite drainage to receive water and the proper channeling to an outfall which will pose no danger to the community or damage to the road.

Commissioner Inyangeyen disclosed that, Hensek Nigeria Limited will be mobilized to site at once to commence emergency remedy work on the road and quickly get it back to use. He accordingly advised the road users to take alternative routes until the repair was done.

Niger Govt. declares ‘state of emergency’ on federal roads, after collapse of 2 bridges

The Niger Government on Wednesday declared ‘state of emergency’ on federal roads following the collapsed of two bridges, linking the Western and Northern Nigeria.

Mr Jonathan Vatsa, the state Commissioner for Information, made the declaration shortly after inspecting the bridges in Tatabu and Bokani villages both in Mokwa Local Government Area.

“There is no guarantee of life on these roads, therefore, on behalf of the acting Gov. Alhaji Ahmed Ketso, Niger state as a government hereby declared a state of emergency on federal roads in the state,” Vatsa said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the two bridges collapsed on June 4 and June 11 respectively after downpour.

NAN also report that a railway that links Western and Northern parts of the country also collapsed as a result of flood in the same area.

“Road users should, henceforth, be very careful and take precautionary measures while travelling on the roads.

The federal roads in the state are not longer safe,” the commissioner declared.

“I advise drivers of trucks and articulated vehicles to be conscious, especially when approaching a bridge,” he said.

Vatsa, however, appealed to the Federal Government to intervene in rehabilitating the roads, saying the Northern and Western parts of the country are currently cut-off as a result of the collapsed bridges and railway tracks.

“The two bridges must be fixed at the same time because they are links to each other in one way or the other.

“Vehicles conveying goods and people to other parts of the country will now have to use Tegina-Minna-Suleja-Abuja and Lokoja route which is longer,” he added.

Vatsa called on the Federal Government to do something urgently to reduce the hardship on the people.

Malam Suleiman Mohammed, a resident of Bokani community, told NAN that the collapsed bridges had left motorists and passengers stranded without alternative route.

Umaru Mohammed, a Youth Leader in Bokani Village, told NAN that the youths in Bokani and the neighbouring communities had come up with new initiative of pushing cars and assisting passengers to cross through the water.

According to him, the pushing of buses through the water attracts a fee of N500 per bus while small cars pay N300.

“We only push small cars, articulated vehicles are not allowed. This initiative has created a means of livelihood for youths in the areas for a time being,” he said.

Mohammed said that the collapsed bridge in Bokani had led to the increased in transport fare.

“Before, transport fare from Bokani to Makera was N300 but now it costs N500 while Mokwa, which was N150 now cost N300.

“We are appealing to government to help because we are suffering and travelers are stranded,” he added.

Bridge collapse in Niger closes North to West road– FRSC

  12 Juin

Abuja, June 12, 2017 (NAN) The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) said on Monday that the road linking the Northern part of the country with Western part has been closed due to collapse of a bridge in Niger state.

A bridge at Tatabu village along Mokwa-Jebba road collapsed late Sunday night, Mr Emechiete Emmanuel, an officer of the corps told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Minna.

He advised motorists traveling to the Western part from the North to divert to the Minna/Suleja/Lokoja route.

Emmanuel added that motorists from the Western part coming to the North should now follow the Ilorin/Kabba/Lokoja road.

Emmanuel said that measures were being put in place to find lasting solution to the gridlock on the two sides of the collapsed beidge.

« Our officers and men  from the two sides of the collapsed bridge have been detailed to reduce the stress encountered by motorists as well to redirect traffic.

» We urge motorists to be law abiding in this situation and obey our men in order to recover lost time, » he told NAN.

An articulated vehicle driver at the scene, Gimba Mohammad, told NAN that the gridlock held up most travellers for more than five hours.

« I came here since 8:00am and have not moved an inch. We cannot even see what is happening in front. Most drivers have now decided to divert to reach their destination.

« We want to try the road from here (Tatabu) to Lapai (in Niger) to Gegu (in Kogi) near Lokoja to find our way back to Lagos. It’s a long journey but no alternative,

Bridge Collapses and Shuts Down 15-Gate Route

June 7, 2017

HARBEL, Firestone – The 15-Gate route to Harbel has been shut down due to the collapse of the Du River Bridge.

The steel bridge, located in Firestone Liberia’s Second Division Camp, is a major bridge encountered on the route from Harbel to the 15-Gate junction.

A truck loaded with crushed rocks and which was involved in the ongoing construction at the Roberts International Airport was crossing the bridge when it collapsed along with the bridge into the river. The driver of the truck, Augustine Fayiah, was taken to the Firestone Du-side Hospital for treatment.

The collapse of the bridge poses problems for patients making their way to the Du-side Hospital. Patients coming from Harbel, Monrovia, Unification City, and Buchanan will now have to use the Division 16 route to get to the Firestone-run medical facility.

The news also took many students and commuters by surprise as some had earlier used the bridge or were expected to do so later during the day.

Many students attending the Harbel Multilateral High School who reside in Division Two and other communities nearby said the collapse of the bridge made it difficult for them to get back home.

The students, who usually hitch rides to school by the side of the road, said they will have a tough time commuting for the remainder of the academic period.

The affected route is also used every morning by hundreds of students of the University of Liberia Fendell Campus.

The closure of the bridge means students from Harbel attending the University of Liberia have to access the university’s Fendell campus via the Red Light route, which is a costlier and longer route.

Omudu Mollay, a student of the University of Liberia who lives in Harbel, said he must now raise a significant amount of money to complete the writing of his midterm examinations this week.

“The Du-side route is like a blessing to us. It is cheaper and [an easier] commute than going to Monrovia,” Mollay added.

As for those traveling from Harbel to Kakata, they will now have to use the Firestone 26 Gate route to enter Kakata through Fourteen Road.

Though the actual cause of the collapse has not yet been disclosed by the management of Firestone, former engineering manager for Firestone, Legori Sekajibo, believes that the situation might have resulted from active sand mining activities a few steps from the bridge. He said it might have caused the bridge’s stability to be undermined.

The relatively long duration of the bridge, which was constructed in the 1970s, and the lack of routine maintenance may have also contributed to the collapse.

A few Harbel residents attributed the bridge’s collapse to the recent detour of all airport-bound traffic towards the bridge as a result of the just-ended ECOWAS Summit at the Farmington Hotel.

For security reasons, the police ordered all heavy-duty vehicles to use the Harbel 15-Gate route to avoid breakdowns on the Robertsfield Highway.

Highway 129 closed for days after culvert collapses south of Chapleau

Culvert was scheduled to be replaced this summer

CBC News Posted: Jun 08, 2017 11:06 AM ET

Contractors are working around the clock to re-open a northern Ontario highway, after a culvert collapsed.

It happened Monday morning on Highway 129 south of Chapleau, at a crossing over Poulin Creek.

The highway, which follows the Mississagi River between Chapleau and Thessalon, sank by 300 mm and has been closed since then.

Ontario Ministry of Transportation officials say this culvert was scheduled to be replaced this summer, and a contractor has been working non stop since then to get the road re-opened.

The ministry is hopeful the highway will re-open late Thursday night or Friday morning.

Egypt evacuates toppling 13-floor building in Alexandria

June 1, 2017
2:37 pm

The Egyptian authorities evacuated a 13-floor building in eastern Alexandria in the early hours of Wednesday morning after it toppled over to lean on the building opposite.

Civil protection personnel went to the scene and found the newly-constructed building in Azarita. They immediately cut natural gas and electricity to the building and evacuated the tenants.

The authorities cordoned off the area around the collapsing building as a precautionary procedure in the case that it collapses further.

Alexandria Governor Mohamed Sultan said Thursday that all buildings adjacent to the collapsing building have been evacuated. The Alexandria tramway network in this area has been halted to prevent vibrations that may cause the building to disintegrate.

Sultan said in press statement that all necessary measures have been taken to provide emergency housing for the evacuees; there is coordination with the Social Solidarity Ministry to fulfill all their needs.

He explained that investigations have begun to find the cause of the collapse, stressing that all perpetrators and those responsible for the incident will be held accountable and referred to trial promptly.

Sultan said he immediately formed a committee comprised of representatives from the Engineering School, the Armed Forces and the Arab Contractors Company to intervene immediately and discuss the appropriate solution to demolish the building.
