WARSAW, Poland (AP) — A pre-World War II apartment house collapsed Saturday in southwestern Poland, leaving five people dead, four injured and one missing, authorities said.

Scores of firefighters with dogs were searching the rubble of the building in the town of Swiebodzice (Shvyeh-'boh-tchi-tseh), according to Daniel Mucha, regional spokesman for the firefighters. He said the collapse of two floors of the three-floor building might have been caused by a gas explosion.

Regional governor Pawel Hreniak said the search-and-rescue operation was expected to continue through Sunday.

He confirmed five fatalities, including two school-age children.

Still, firefighters looking for one more missing person said there were no sounds yet coming from the building's bricks and broken wood.

Prime Minister Beata Szydlo was heading to the site, 420 kilometers (250 miles) southwest of Warsaw, to be with the victims and the rescue workers.

The governor of Swiebodzice, Bogdan Kozuchowicz, said the pre-World War II building was recently renovated and had been in good technical condition.

The injured were taken to hospitals in Swiebodzice and in Wroclaw. One survivor, identified only by her first name Stanislawa, told TVN24 that she was "miraculously saved."

"I was in the kitchen and suddenly it was dark and full of debris and some broken wooden planks," she said from her hospital bed in Swiebodzice. "I got on top of those planks and started calling 'Help! Help!' Two firefighters came and pulled me out by the arm."

She said her husband was resting on the bed at the time of the collapse.

"I don't know what has happened to him," she said, her voice trembling.

With her teenage son, also a survivor, at her side, she said the family had lost everything.

Tunnel collapse knocks Nepal’s 100-kW Budum Rivulet Micro Hydropower offline

04/06/2017

The canal that supplies water to the 100-kW Budum Rivulet Micro Hydropower project in Nepal has collapsed, news agencies are reporting.

The project, at Gudel of Mahakulung rural municipality in the Solukhumbu district, began operating in 2015.

It is reported that a 30-meter-long section of the canal collapsed and will take a minimum of one month to repair. More than 750 households have lost electricity as a result of the collapse.

THE STRETCH ZONE, THAT SINKING FEELING

http://www.zetatalk.com/index/blog1010.htm

We have described a time preceding the last weeks when emergency management teams would be exhausted, turning a deaf ear in countries like the US and Britain to cries of "terrorism" and a need to install martial law. What could cause such a state, worldwide? Earthquakes have increased in frequency and strength, and accidents in the stretch zones are increasing because the plates have loosened up and are moving a greater distance during each adjustment. The recent breaks in Internet cables around the Arabian Plate are a case in point. Where earthquakes of lower magnitude are registered and often felt, when they increase in size to a magnitude 6 or 7 or greater, infrastructure is destroyed.

What will it be like when earthquakes are happening to most cities around the world, simultaneously? Stretch zones will experience even more destruction, as the infrastructure will be pulled apart. Gas mains will explode into holocausts. Travel will become impossible when roadways are torn apart or heaved up. And the increasingly volatile atmosphere, jerked about by the wobble, will make air travel treacherous. Where faltering on occasion now, satellites will falter increasingly, making communications difficult. All this leads to panic, so that distracted workers cause malfunctions in services. This can be expected before the last weeks arrive.

EXCLUSIVE: Three dead, several trapped as three-story residential building collapses in Liaqatabad

KARACHI: At least three people, including two children and a woman, were killed and several others trapped as a three-story residential building on Monday late night collapsed at Liaqatabad No, 9 in Karachi.

According to details, a three-story residential building comprised of several flats collapsed in the wee hours of Tuesday, where three dead bodies were reportedly recovered from the rubble while several others  have trapped under debris.

Rescue workers and rangers rushed to the scene to carry out rescue operation with locals and trying their best to bring the trapped people out of rubble to save their lives.

The collapse was blamed on substandard building material. The impact of the collapse also affected nearby houses which were later evacuated.

It is a much populated and congested area of the metropolis, where now heavy machinery and other emergency management under the supervision of deputy mayor Arshad Vohra have reached on the spot to properly start the rescue operation.

“I was in my home when my friend called to alert me that the building near my house had collapsed. “On my arrival, I discovered that only three the victims were so far rescued. We are hoping that others will be rescued alive from the rubble." a local resident of the area said.

Other residents of the area told that at least four families resided in the ill-fated building and a hotel and other shops were also established on the first floor of the building.

Manipur cut off as crucial Barak Bridge collapses

Imphal, July 17, 2017 11:52 IST

Updated: July 17, 2017 13:59 IST

The highway, considered as the second lifeline of the border state, assumed greater importance after a massive landslide at Viswema in neighbouring Nagaland cut off the major Imphal-Dimapur national highway.

The crucial Barak bridge located along the National Highway-102 collapsed on Monday morning, cutting off land-locked Manipur from rest of the country, an official said.

The bridge collapsed when a 10-wheeler goods-laden truck was passing through it, a transport department official said, adding that the structure was in a fragile condition since last night.

This has left around 200 goods-laden trucks coming from Jiribam town to Imphal stranded. Repairing works are being carried out on war-footing, the official said. The Barak bridge is located along the Imphal-Jiribam highway and passes through the hill district of Tamenglong.

Railway Bridge Washed Away In Odisha Flash Floods, Government Seeks Army's Help

The flash floods resulted from an alarming rise in the water levels in the Nagavalli and the Kalyani rivers.

All India | Press Trust of India | Updated: July 16, 2017 20:52 IST

Bhuwaneswar:  Heavy rains swelled two major rivers causing flash floods in Odisha's Rayagada district, prompting the state government to seek the help of defence forces, as four IAF choppers were pressed into service for relief and rescue operations, government officials today said. A railway bridge was also washed away affecting connectivity.

The flash floods resulted from an alarming rise in the water levels in the Nagavalli and the Kalyani rivers.

Four Mi-17 V5 helicopters of IAF have been tasked for the relief and rescue operations. The choppers, detached for OpTriveni under the Central Air Command, based at Raipur/Jagdalpur, were on a standby awaiting weather clearance.

"As it is not possible to rescue the people through boat and Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force, the assistance of Indian Air Force is required for the rescue operation and airdrop of relief material in the affected areas of Rayagada district. Four helicopters have been requisitioned," said a defence official.

Several areas in adjoining Kalahandi district were also severely affected by the floods caused by incessant rains, disrupting road and rail communications, they said.

"There are flash floods in Kalyansinghpur of Rayagada caused by the rivers Nagavalli and Kalyani," Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik said after reviewing the flood situation at an emergency meeting held at the office of the Special Relief Commissioner (SRC).

Stating that the state control room in the SRC office is tracking the situation, Mr Patnaik said the ODRAF, fire service and CRPF were on the spot for undertaking rescue and relief.

The help of the Army, Navy and Air Force helicopters is sought and instructions have been issued to take all immediate steps to ensure relief and rescue and other mitigation measures, he said.

"No effort will be spared to ensure the safety of the people," the chief minister said.

While the district collector is also in the charge of the situation, the development commissioner has been directed to coordinate with all the departments. The revenue divisional commissioner (southern division) and Range DIG have been instructed to closely monitor the situation, he said.

Noting that inclement weather persisted in the flood affected areas at present, Development Commissioner R Balakrishnan said IAF choppers would be pressed into service when weather conditions improved to ensure safe landing.

Helicopters would be used for rescuing a large number of people trapped on rooftops as their houses had been submerged by flood water besides dropping food packets and relief materials, said an official.

SRC Bishnupad Sethi said the concerned officials had already been alerted on the basis of forecasts by the IMD about heavy rainfall in the northern region.

He said two bridges had been washed away causing disruption of road connections, while a railway bridge was also damaged disrupting train services.

Tambe bridge collapses

The Tambe Bridge, which links the Garu Tempane district to the Bawku municipality, has collapsed making it impossible for motorists to cross to either side of the district.

The bridge was said to have collapsed on Friday July 14 when an articulated truck with registration number GT 2758-12, loaded with bags of millet from Garu to Kumasi crossed it.

The truck fell on its side as one section of the bridge caved in. The driver and his conductor managed to escape unhurt but the truck load of millet submerged in the river below the bridge.

This has made it impossible for any vehicle to travel to the other side of the town. The metal bridge was constructed in 2007.

4 dead as ageing Chathe Bridge caves in

July 12, 2017

Dimapur | July 11

The ageing bridge over the Chathe River at 4th Mile connecting Dimapur with Niuland ADC sub-division caved in on July 11 claiming at least 4 lives. Beams supporting the single-lane iron girder bridge gave way around 5:00 pm today taking with it at least 5-6 vehicles crossing the bridge at the time.

The deceased victims included a family of 3 – father, mother and son, and a woman. The family of 3 was identified as Jaheda Ali (28 years), Sahil Ali (11 years) and Bakshad Ali (32 years) while the woman was identified as Rohita Devi. All hailed from Tripura and were residing at Nihoto village. They were reportedly in an autorickshaw.

The Deputy Commissioner, Dimapur, Kensonye Yhome while confirming the 4 deaths, added that it could not be ascertained for sure on the number of fatalities “at this stage.” A number of injuries were also reported but the DC said that till 9:00 pm following the collapse of the bridge no person has been reported hospitalised.

Two columns on the east bank (towards Niuland) shifted dislodging the deck of the bridge.

The collapse of the bridge has virtually cut off two administrative blocks – Niuland and Kuhuboto – from Dimapur. In the meantime, the DC informed that connectivity with Niuland will have to be maintained via Seithekiema. He said that vehicular traffic will be diverted through the Patkai-Seithekiema-New Showuba route till a new bridge comes up, while adding that workers were on the job to refurbish the rarely used dirt track.

The bridge, as per official records, was constructed in 1986. Years of neglect and a river below, which swells during the monsoon, has rendered the bridge weak and unsafe for use. But the lack of a proper alternative route has forced commuters to depend on it. The Dimapur district administration had on June 2015 issued a warning on the stability of the bridge while temporarily shutting it off. It was later reopened to use.

A proposal to construct a new RCC-beam bridge was recently approved by the government. The DC informed that the work order for a new bridge was issued about 2 months back but the ground work could not start because of the arrival of the monsoon. The construction firm had also reportedly started work on a temporary overpass, which was washed away.

Nalerigu-Bunkpurugu bridge collapses

Wednesday, 28 June 2017

Information reaching Daily Guide indicates that the bridge that links up Nalerigu to Sakogu-Bunkpurugu in the Northern Region has collapsed.
The incident had severely affected residents of Nalerigu, Sakogu, Nakpanduri, Bunkpurugu, Garu, and Bawku hindering their business activities.
When Daily Guide contacted the District Chief Executive (DCE) for East Mamprusi, Abdul Nashir Danladi, he confirmed the unfortunate situation and said it had gravely affected economic activities and movements in the District.
According to him, the Regional Highways engineer had inspected the site and he was expected to present a detailed report to the Regional Minister who will further forward it to the sector minister for immediate action to be taken.
“In the meantime, an alternative route from Namangu to Bintili, from Bintili to CMB to Nalerigu is being used,” he disclosed.
He indicated that the collapse of the bridge had especially affected market women and farmers in the area adding that yesterday was Sakogu market

day but due to the incident they could not go to the market.
“Buyers and sellers alike are not able to go about their daily activities as they would want due to the collapse.”
Mr Danladi stated that farmers from the surrounding communities were not able to bring their goods to the Nalerigu market due to the collapse of the bridge which he feared would create hardship for them as their farm produce might go bad if the road was not fixed on time.
The DCE however said MP for the area, Hon. Hajia Alima Mahama had been contacted as well as the Northern Regional Minister Salifu Saeed.
He therefore appealed to the MP for Bunkpurugu, Hon. Solomon Boar and His Excellency the Vice President of the Republic of Ghana, Alhaji Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and other stakeholders to act immediately to rectify the situation.
