Building collapses in Poland: 5 killed, 4 injured, 1 missing
WARSAW, Poland (AP) — A pre-World War II apartment house collapsed Saturday in southwestern Poland, leaving five people dead, four injured and one missing, authorities said.
Scores of firefighters with dogs were searching the rubble of the building in the town of Swiebodzice (Shvyeh-'boh-tchi-tseh), according to Daniel Mucha, regional spokesman for the firefighters. He said the collapse of two floors of the three-floor building might have been caused by a gas explosion.
Regional governor Pawel Hreniak said the search-and-rescue operation was expected to continue through Sunday.
He confirmed five fatalities, including two school-age children.
Still, firefighters looking for one more missing person said there were no sounds yet coming from the building's bricks and broken wood.
Prime Minister Beata Szydlo was heading to the site, 420 kilometers (250 miles) southwest of Warsaw, to be with the victims and the rescue workers.
The governor of Swiebodzice, Bogdan Kozuchowicz, said the pre-World War II building was recently renovated and had been in good technical condition.
The injured were taken to hospitals in Swiebodzice and in Wroclaw. One survivor, identified only by her first name Stanislawa, told TVN24 that she was "miraculously saved."
"I was in the kitchen and suddenly it was dark and full of debris and some broken wooden planks," she said from her hospital bed in Swiebodzice. "I got on top of those planks and started calling 'Help! Help!' Two firefighters came and pulled me out by the arm."
She said her husband was resting on the bed at the time of the collapse.
"I don't know what has happened to him," she said, her voice trembling.
With her teenage son, also a survivor, at her side, she said the family had lost everything.

Tunnel collapse knocks Nepal’s 100-kW Budum Rivulet Micro Hydropower offline
The canal that supplies water to the 100-kW Budum Rivulet Micro Hydropower project in Nepal has collapsed, news agencies are reporting.
The project, at Gudel of Mahakulung rural municipality in the Solukhumbu district, began operating in 2015.
It is reported that a 30-meter-long section of the canal collapsed and will take a minimum of one month to repair. More than 750 households have lost electricity as a result of the collapse.

We have described a time preceding the last weeks when emergency management teams would be exhausted, turning a deaf ear in countries like the US and Britain to cries of "terrorism" and a need to install martial law. What could cause such a state, worldwide? Earthquakes have increased in frequency and strength, and accidents in the stretch zones are increasing because the plates have loosened up and are moving a greater distance during each adjustment. The recent breaks in Internet cables around the Arabian Plate are a case in point. Where earthquakes of lower magnitude are registered and often felt, when they increase in size to a magnitude 6 or 7 or greater, infrastructure is destroyed.
What will it be like when earthquakes are happening to most cities around the world, simultaneously? Stretch zones will experience even more destruction, as the infrastructure will be pulled apart. Gas mains will explode into holocausts. Travel will become impossible when roadways are torn apart or heaved up. And the increasingly volatile atmosphere, jerked about by the wobble, will make air travel treacherous. Where faltering on occasion now, satellites will falter increasingly, making communications difficult. All this leads to panic, so that distracted workers cause malfunctions in services. This can be expected before the last weeks arrive.

Jakarta, Indonesia (CNN)Dozens of people were injured Monday when a floor at the Indonesia Stock Exchange in Jakarta collapsed, spilling people onto the lobby area below.
At least 77 people were taken to local hospitals after a hallway between two buildings suddenly gave way, according to Argo Yuwono, senior commissioner for Jakarta police department.
Two people have since been discharged. Police said most injuries were minor and they did not comment on the cause of the collapse.A CNN Indonesia correspondent said after the collapse the stock exchange director was shouting at people through a loudspeaker to evacuate the building, which also houses the World Bank's Indonesia office.
The lobby was crowded at the time of the collapse, just after people had finished lunch.

LIMA: Peruvian rescue workers were combing a river Wednesday for 16 people missing after the bridge they were on collapsed in a valley northwest of the mountain-top ruins of Machu Picchu, officials said.
The bridge, close to the village of Kimbiri, collapsed on Tuesday following hours of heavy seasonal rains in the southeastern region. At least 30 people were walking across it at the time, the civil defense authority said.
Fifteen of the people were saved and taken to hospital with injuries.
But 16 plunged into the Kimbiri river and were swept away.
An army helicopter, navy launches and a fire brigade were searching for them, officials said. Fire officers said the rains had greatly strengthened currents in the river.
The bridge was built in 2015 and was closed to traffic for maintenance, according to local authorities in Kimbiri.
The village is around 150 kilometers (95 miles) northwest of the Machu Picchu ruins

Bridge collapses in MP’s Jhabua district; none hurt
— By | Dec 26, 2017 08:30 pmJhabua (MP): A bridge collapsed near Alsiyakhedi village (Ramnagar) in Madhya Pradesh’s Jhabua district today, disrupting vehicular movement on Jhabua-Ratlam road, around 40 kms from here, police said.
Superintendent of Police Mahesh Chandra Jain said the bridge, located on a rivulet which is dry now, caved in this afternoon.
Fortunately, nobody was injured in the incident as there was no vehicle plying on the bridge at the time of the incident.
“Steps are being taken to prepare a diversion to enable vehicles to pass till the bridge is repaired,” he said.
Following the incident, a large number of vehicles, mainly trucks and four-wheelers, remained stranded on both sides of the road, an eyewitness said.
Several villages and towns of Jhabua and Ratlam remained cut off after the collapse.
There is another state highway that connects villages and towns located on both sides of the bridge.

Retaining wall collapses onto Oak Bay Avenue
A retaining wall has collapsed into the road near Oak Bay Avenue and Fort Street.Photograph By Adrian Lam, Times ColonistA retaining wall collapsed near Oak Bay Avenue and Fort Street on Tuesday, burying a bus stop and forcing the evacuation of a three-storey apartment building.
Ricky de Souza was driving past the intersection about 8 a.m. when he heard a loud noise.
“All of a sudden my car was being pelted with mud and there was a loud noise and my car was getting hit and being pushed,” said de Souza, who was on his way to work at St. Christopher’s Montessori School. “I didn’t know what happening.”
He said he managed to pull over and called 911 once he saw the scene. He then got out of his vehicle and started to direct traffic around the eastbound lane, now covered with mud and rock.
The rock wall that collapsed, along an apartment-building property, was about two metres high and adjacent to the sidewalk on the south side of Oak Bay Avenue, near the intersection of Fort Street and Pandora Avenue.
Police and fire crews rushed to the scene, and were followed by work crews and earth-moving equipment. But removal of the rubble was held up over fears that people might be buried under it.
Search-and-rescue dogs were brought in to give assurance that it was safe for excavators to begin scooping up debris.
Fraser Work, the City of Victoria’s director of engineering, said the sidewalk and eastbound traffic lanes will remain closed until the safety of the remaining wall of earth can be certified.
Shoring may be required but that will have to involve the owner of the apartment-building property, he said.
Late Tuesday afternoon, the City of Victoria said geotechnical analysis had determined residents could safely return to the apartment building.
It was determined debris could be safely removed from the sidewalk and street. Previously, it was thought that the debris could be propping up the remaining bank of earth.
Some of the sidewalk and road will remain closed to complete further geotechnical safety analysis. The city is working with B.C. Transit to move the bus stop.
The reason for the collapse has not been determined, Work said. “It may be a combination of things that caused it.”
Dave Thibault, co-owner with his wife of the 13-suite apartment building for 30 years, said construction crews were on scene by early afternoon and it looked like the safety of the building would be assured.
Thibault said the apartment building was finished in 1968 and has 13 suites and 14 residents. Most of the tenants are long-term renters who have formed a community, he said. “We have really nice people living here,” Thibault said in an interview outside the apartment. “I’m just concerned about their well-being.”
One resident rushing off to keep an appointment said he was awakened by a loud bang but felt no disturbance, so went back to sleep until it was time for him to rise.
Another resident, five-year tenant Chris Adams, said he had already left for his construction job near Shawnigan Lake when the wall slumped. But at his job site, work was cancelled because of rain, snow and power outages, so Adams set off for home. Before he even arrived people had contacted him to let him know what had happened.
Held back from re-entering the building by yellow caution tape, he said his biggest fears were for his cat, Bambi, and the possible loss of a good home. “It’s a great building.”
Meanwhile, de Souza said his vehicle had to be towed from the site. He tried to start it up afterward but decided it wasn’t safe to drive it away.
De Souza said the rain might have been a small blessing, keeping people indoors and away from the scene. “That [the rain] probably helped keep people away because that spot is usually packed with cyclists and people waiting for the bus.”

DAANBANTAYAN, Cebu – Heavy rains brought by Tropical Storm “Urduja” caused a roadway here to collapse Saturday.
A portion of a road in Sitio Anapo in Barangay Tinubdan collapsed and was closed to 4-wheeled vehicles.
Daanbantayan Mayor Vic Loot, who inspected the area, said the road closure is a precautionary measure against possible soil erosion.
The tropical storm also caused a power outage in parts of Cebu after strong winds toppled electric posts Friday. Power in the areas of Bogo City, San Remegio and Daanbantayan was restored around 6 a.m. Saturday.

NEW DELHI: A bridge suddenly collapsed in Uttarakhand on the Gangotri national highway on Thursday morning.
The bridge was constructed by the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) in place of the main bridge, which had collapsed during the 2013 Uttarakhand disaster. Gangotri, Maneri, Harsil and several villages on the hills got disconnected from the district headquarters.

Two dead, four injured as two buildings collapse in north Cairo

Two people were killed and four others injured in the collapse of two buildings in north Cairo's Rod El-Farg district on Tuesday, Al-Ahram Arabic website reported.
According to Al-Ahram, the buildings collapsed on Monday as the result of the collapse of another five-story building nearby.
The civil-security forces managed to rescue four injured people from the ruins of the two buildings.
However, two other people, a 45-year-old-woman and a five-year-girl, died in the collapse.
Rescue workers are still conducting search-and-rescue efforts in the hope of finding more survivors.
The Rod El-Farag district, once known for its fruit-and-vegetable market, is a crowded area with poor-quality housing.

Emergency services officials in the Czech capital say four people were injured when a footbridge that crosses the Vltava River collapsed, FoxNews reported.
The fire and rescue service say two of the four suffered serious injuries in the Troja district of Prague when the bridge gave way on Saturday afternoon.
The concrete bridge was used by cyclists and pedestrians on the way to Prague's popular zoo.
It was not immediately clear what caused the collapse. Police are investigating.

Tunnel mishap kills 8 miners in Magwe
The scene of the accident that killed several miners on Monday. Nay Aung/ The Myanmar TimesEIGHT miners, including a Chinese national, were killed when a coal mine tunnel collapse near Ngape-Shwesettaw road in Magwe Region, rescuers from the Department of Fire Service said on Tuesday.
The accident occurred Monday afternoon after an air pipe made of tarpaulin, used for underground ventilation of the mine, burst, causing the roof and walls of the tunnel to collapse, miners said.
“When the air pipe burst, air supply to underground was cut. Three mine workers inside managed to get out but eight others were buried,” a coal truck driver who witnessed the accident said.
“Due to the pressure from the air pipe rupture, the bulbs inside the tunnel got burnt down.”
Although firefighters and miners had tried to rescue the workers trapped inside the collapsed tunnel, they didn’t succeed due to lack of full rescue equipment and tonnes of soil and debris that choked the excavation, a Red Cross rescuer said.
“There is no air underground. As we got some gas smell, we weren’t able to go down immediately. We found two dead bodies on top of each other,” he said.
“The two bodies were brought out at about 11:00 pm (Monday),” Department of Fire Services Region Head U Aung Win Sein said. “Rescue works were still in the process of recovering the remaining bodies.”
“Dead bodies were covered by a huge boulder in seven feet circumference and two feet thickness. If we remove that boulder, there will be more collapses which can affect rescue works,” he said. “We are now first reinforcing the walls and roofs. At about 3:00 pm (Tuesday), we were able to recover two more bodies,” he said.
The coal mine is between 150 and 300 feet deep and is being operated by is Han Htet (1) Company, which started mining activities in 2011.
There were previous coal mine accidents with collapses and casualties in Minbu and Minhla townships but this accident is believed to have the highest death toll, local residents said.
Two firms were granted 10-year permits for large scale coal mining with areas of 45 acres and 148.50 acres in Minhla and Minbu townships in 2014-2015, according to the statistics from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Conservation.
