Building collapses in Poland: 5 killed, 4 injured, 1 missing

WARSAW, Poland (AP) — A pre-World War II apartment house collapsed Saturday in southwestern Poland, leaving five people dead, four injured and one missing, authorities said.

Scores of firefighters with dogs were searching the rubble of the building in the town of Swiebodzice (Shvyeh-'boh-tchi-tseh), according to Daniel Mucha, regional spokesman for the firefighters. He said the collapse of two floors of the three-floor building might have been caused by a gas explosion.

Regional governor Pawel Hreniak said the search-and-rescue operation was expected to continue through Sunday.

He confirmed five fatalities, including two school-age children.

Still, firefighters looking for one more missing person said there were no sounds yet coming from the building's bricks and broken wood.

Prime Minister Beata Szydlo was heading to the site, 420 kilometers (250 miles) southwest of Warsaw, to be with the victims and the rescue workers.

The governor of Swiebodzice, Bogdan Kozuchowicz, said the pre-World War II building was recently renovated and had been in good technical condition.

The injured were taken to hospitals in Swiebodzice and in Wroclaw. One survivor, identified only by her first name Stanislawa, told TVN24 that she was "miraculously saved."

"I was in the kitchen and suddenly it was dark and full of debris and some broken wooden planks," she said from her hospital bed in Swiebodzice. "I got on top of those planks and started calling 'Help! Help!' Two firefighters came and pulled me out by the arm."

She said her husband was resting on the bed at the time of the collapse.

"I don't know what has happened to him," she said, her voice trembling.

With her teenage son, also a survivor, at her side, she said the family had lost everything.

Tunnel collapse knocks Nepal’s 100-kW Budum Rivulet Micro Hydropower offline

04/06/2017

The canal that supplies water to the 100-kW Budum Rivulet Micro Hydropower project in Nepal has collapsed, news agencies are reporting.

The project, at Gudel of Mahakulung rural municipality in the Solukhumbu district, began operating in 2015.

It is reported that a 30-meter-long section of the canal collapsed and will take a minimum of one month to repair. More than 750 households have lost electricity as a result of the collapse.

THE STRETCH ZONE, THAT SINKING FEELING

http://www.zetatalk.com/index/blog1010.htm

We have described a time preceding the last weeks when emergency management teams would be exhausted, turning a deaf ear in countries like the US and Britain to cries of "terrorism" and a need to install martial law. What could cause such a state, worldwide? Earthquakes have increased in frequency and strength, and accidents in the stretch zones are increasing because the plates have loosened up and are moving a greater distance during each adjustment. The recent breaks in Internet cables around the Arabian Plate are a case in point. Where earthquakes of lower magnitude are registered and often felt, when they increase in size to a magnitude 6 or 7 or greater, infrastructure is destroyed.

What will it be like when earthquakes are happening to most cities around the world, simultaneously? Stretch zones will experience even more destruction, as the infrastructure will be pulled apart. Gas mains will explode into holocausts. Travel will become impossible when roadways are torn apart or heaved up. And the increasingly volatile atmosphere, jerked about by the wobble, will make air travel treacherous. Where faltering on occasion now, satellites will falter increasingly, making communications difficult. All this leads to panic, so that distracted workers cause malfunctions in services. This can be expected before the last weeks arrive.

The Myaung-Mya Expansion Bridge in Ayeyarwady Region collapsed into Rway River at around 1:45am this morning, leaving two people gone missing, according to sources.

During the incident, a 6-wheeled truck carrying poultry feed plunged down into the river along with two persons including the driver and they’re still missing until now, officials said.

The collapse left passenger cars and trucks unable to cross the river and stranded on each sides of the river, waiting for help from authorities who are now searching for barges.

The bridge was 1450 feet long having a 28-feet wide road and opened for traffic on September 18, 1996.

Bridge on Gangotri highway collapses

Connects Uttarkashi with Sino-India border I Was restored to traffic after repairs on Jan 10

Tribune News Service

Dehradun, April 1

The sole bailey bridge over the Assi Ganga river connecting Uttarkashi district with the Sino-Indian border collapsed on Sunday morning.

No one was reportedly hurt in the incident. The 60-metre long bridge at Gangori on the Gangotri National Highway in Uttarkashi district has collapsed for the second time in over three months.

The 190 feet bridge collapsed last on December 14, 2017. The bridge was repaired and opened to traffic on January 10.

Located at a distance of     6 km from Uttarkashi town, the bridge is a vital link for transporting locals to and from 80 villages of Bhatwari region and tourists visiting the Gangotri temple.

The bridge has a load bearing capacity of 19 tonne and is important in terms of ferrying ration and other reinforcements for the ITBP personnel guarding the Sino-Indian border in this part of the country.

Efforts are now under way for immediate alternative arrangements to ensure smooth flow of traffic.

The need for a permanent bridge replacing the current arrangement has been felt since long. The original bridge was washed away in the 2013 floods.

Meanwhile, the district authorities are probing the reasons for the bridge collapse. Sources attribute the collapse to a large number of overloaded trucks crossing the bridge daily. With Char Dham Yatra round the corner, it has become imperative for the authorities concerned to repair the bridge as soon as possible.

One Man Dies, Another Missing in Irrawaddy Bridge Collapse

2 April 2018

PATHEIN, Irrawaddy Region — One man was killed and another is missing after a suspension bridge in Irrawaddy Region’s Myaungmya Township collapsed early Sunday.

The entire bridge fell into the river as a truck carrying the two men attempted to cross it in the early hours of Sunday.

The body of the truck driver, Ko Than Zaw Htike (aka Mae Gyi), was found around 4 p.m. on Sunday, while truck owner Ko Aung Gyi was still missing as rescue workers continued their search on Monday. Both of the men were Myaungmya residents.

“The truck was a six-wheeled vehicle and was carrying chicken feed when the accident happened at around 1:15 a.m. on Sunday. Steel suspension cables on the Myaungmya side broke and collapsed into river,” lawmaker U Thant Zaw Win of Irrawaddy regional parliament from Myaungmya Township told The Irrawaddy.

The bridge was a main transportation hub linking Myaungmya and Labutta townships with Pathein and Yangon. The collapse has halted the flow of commodities as well as transportation between Labutta and Myaungmya.

“The bridge had to be repaired some two years ago after steel cables broke. I heard that major repairs were made twice in 2016 and 2017, respectively. But why did the whole bridge collapse now?” asked Myaungmya resident U Kyaw Win. “It’s lucky that the truck was carrying only two people. What if it were a passenger bus?”

Irrawaddy Region Transport Minister U Win Htay said the bridge was built in 1996 and had been under repair and maintenance. “For the time being, we have arranged three big boats that can carry cars across the river,” he said.

The bridge was opened to the public on March 27, 1996, and after its strength was found to have weakened significantly over the past few years, the gross weight limit for trucks was reduced to 20 tons.

Last year, the Parliament approved Myaungmya Township lawmaker Dr. Soe Moe Thu’s proposal to build a new bridge in Myaungmya at a cost of over 6 billion kyats. The lawmaker said that the bridge had suffered structural damage as a result of overweight aid convoys crossed the bridge in the aftermath of Nargis storm in 2008.

Construction of a new bridge started late last year and is scheduled for completion in 2020. Before then the regional government will arrange large boats for travelers and vehicles.

Heavy rain causes collapse along Smith Road in Floyd County

FLOYD COUNTY — The recent heavy rain not only left behind flooded streets and homes, but also washed out roads throughout Floyd County.

The biggest road void is along Smith Road where a culvert failed near Scottsville Road. Floyd County Highway Superintendent Ronnie Tuell said the old culvert will have to be dug out and replaced. He said he hopes to have that section of the road replaced by March 9.

Tuell said barricades were put in place after inspecting the road. He said soon after, the road collapsed. Tuell added that the section of road to be repaired is 30 feet long.

"It's a pretty big job," Tuell said. "As long as weather holds up, we hope to have it open next Friday."

There was also a small section of Corydon Pike that was washed out, but that has since been fixed. Heavy rain also caused road issues on Buck Creek Road, Balmer Fenwick Road and Mack Court.

Tuell said the Corydon Pike issue was caused by debris being washed down from the hillside and clogging up the culvert, causing water to wash out the road. He said the hillside had to be shored up Monday to help repair the issue.

Most of the work is being done by highway department employees.

Bridge has collapsed in flood-hit Port Bruce, OPP say

Free Press staff

This photo of the collapsed bridge in the flood-hit Elgin County community of Port Bruce was submitted to The Free Press Friday by Brad Semotiuk.

A bridge has collapsed in Port Bruce, an Elgin County community that’s been hit hard by this week’s rain and melting snow.

Police have closed Imperial Road between Dexter and Rush Creek lines following the collapse, the OPP announced shortly before 1 p.m. Friday.

There were unconfirmed reports of a vehicle in the water.

Port Bruce, a beach community located east of Port Stanley, was especially hard hit by this week’s flooding. Rising waters on Tuesday closed several streets and left houses submerged, prompting the OPP to set up a command centre.

Contingency plans were made to evacuate parts of the town, but those were abandoned after the water began receding Tuesday night.

The Free Press is en route to the scene as of early Friday afternoon.

New Jersey Man Dies When Beam Falls in Pennsylvania Tunnel

A New Jersey man has died after an electrical beam collapsed and crashed through the windshield of his truck inside a Pennsylvania tunnel.

Feb. 22, 2018, at 9:09 a.m.

ALLENTOWN, Pa. (AP) — A New Jersey man has died after an electrical beam collapsed and crashed through the windshield of his truck inside a Pennsylvania turnpike tunnel.

The Lehigh County coroner says the metal conduit hit 70-year-old Howard Sexton of East Greenwich Township, New Jersey. He was pronounced dead at the scene in the Lehigh Tunnel, and an autopsy will be performed Friday.

Traffic is moving in both directions in the northbound lanes of the Pennsylvania Turnpike's Northeast Extension. The southbound lanes remain closed Thursday after the conduit fell inside the tunnel around 6 p.m. Wednesday.

Officials are trying to determine what caused the beam to collapse.

Pavement Collapse Shuts Down Section Of Road

PIKE COUNTY, Ky. (LEX 18)-- A section of a Kentucky road is closed to all traffic after a pavement collapse.

It happened Saturday night on KY 1499 just past the turn off into Feds Creek.

Officials with the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet have placed flaggers on both sides of the area to prevent anyone from trying to drive through. They say maintenance workers will be on duty 24/7 indefinitely.

"There is no "quick fix" for this situation. Engineers and maintenance specialists are assessing the extent of the damage and will develop a plan for permanent repairs. This cannot be fixed out of our routine maintenance budget. We will need to request emergency funding and may have to put the project out for bids if it is beyond the scope of the equipment that we have. Keep in mind, also, that the asphalt plants are closed until the first of April, so any repairs between now and then would not have final pavement. Right now we don't know whether it can be fixed that quickly."

Officials with KYTC say to prepare to add 30-45 minutes to your commute via the detour.

They added that they will work as quickly as they can, but their goal is a permanent fix that is safe for the traveling public, not a quick fix that may not be thoroughly safe and would have to be done over.
