Water main break destroys street near Los Angeles, California - July 29, 2014

"All the land between New England and Mexico is being pulled at a diagonal, and it is not just the fault lines that are feeling stress. All will participate when the New Madrid Fault makes a serious adjustment."  ZetaTalk

Since 2013, a conspicuous number of water main breaks and sinkholes have been reported across the U.S.  While water lines commonly rupture during winter months, especially in regions experiencing subfreezing temperatures, large water mains are fracturing in southern states where ground temperatures remain above freezing.

Notable water main breaks and sinkholes during the first 6 days of 2013:

Harrisburg, Pennsylvania - "Super Sinkhole Walter" and 40 Others

Harrisburg officials expect it will take several weeks to repair damage from a massive sinkhole that forced dozens of residents to evacuate.

The city’s Department of Public Works said it could be another 30 days before water, sewer and gas lines are replaced in the neighborhood where the sinkhole is causing problems.  "Super Sinkhole Walter," as the North Fourth Street collapse has been called, is big enough to have its own Foursquare check-in location.

On Thursday, the massive hole partially swallowed a construction backhoe.

The hole opened Monday morning, and later opened a bigger hole.

A spokesman for Mayor Linda Thompson said the city must replace the entire water and sewer system lines on the block.
The spokesman, Robert Philbin, said new water and sewer lines will not be working for five to six weeks.

These two large sinkholes in the 2100 block of North Fourth Street are among at least 40 sinkholes covered by steel plates citywide, according to Kevin Hagerich, director of the city’s Department of Public Works.

Malibu, California - Recurring Water Main Breaks

Another water main break in Malibu collapsed part of John Tyler Drive as crews worked to repair the leak.

A broken water main and partially collapsed road have narrowed traffic to one lane on Malibu Country Drive near John Tyler Drive.

Between 30 and 35 customers in Malibu Country Estates are without water. Los Angeles County Public Works received a call about a partially collapsed roadway on Malibu Country Drive at 9:30 a.m, according to spokesman Mike Kaspar.

Kaspar said the road is cut down to one lane for approximately 100 yards.

This is the second water main break reported in Malibu in as many days. On Wednesday, the main that supplies water to the Adamson House broke and employees from Public Works worked overnight on a temporary fix and permanent reroute of the underground pipeline. Westbound traffic on Pacific Coast Highway was cut down to one lane between Malibu Inn and Serra Road while crews made the repair.

Grand Rapids, Michigan - Big Hole / Deep Water

A water main break has closed the westbound lanes of 44th Street between Division Avenue and U.S. 131 in Wyoming, Michigan

A broken valve is causing complications in repairing the break in a 16-inch water main and the road may be closed until Saturday, authorities now say.

The valve, which broke in a partially-closed position, must be replaced before the water main can be fixed, Wyoming Director of Public Works William Dooley said in a statement on Friday, Jan. 4.

The water main broke area of 44th Street SW and Clay Avenue on Thursday.

The westbound lanes of 44th Street are closed near Clay Avenue, and Clay is closed from 44th Street north to Louisiana Avenue.

Dooley said the repair is taking much longer than anticipated because of the valve problem. Water is still flowing from the main because the valve cannot be closed.

A private contractor has been called to help city crews and they expect to fix the valve this afternoon.

Dooley said the water main break has not affected drinking water to area residents.

“Once the valve has been replaced, we will start work to repair the water main and hope to have that wrapped up yet today. We recognize and apologize for the inconvenience that this has caused to businesses, area residents and motorists and are working as quickly as we can to return things to normal," Dooley said in the statement.

New Orleans, Louisiana - Cajun Geyser

A water main break in the middle of Adams Street near Maple poured water into the streets Friday afternoon.

Sewerage and Water Board crews arrived on the scene around 1:30 pm to address the incident.

An hour or so later, the break erupted into a full-blown geyser, showering Adams Street with water.

Water was rising on the sides of the street near several Uptown businesses, creeping up on the tires of some cars.

Atlanta, Georgia

A massive water main break caused headaches for both residents and drivers on Clairmont Road in Chamblee, more than 24 hours after it first happened.

A huge hole opened up in the road between Airport Road and Wingate Road Saturday morning. Residents in the area were without water for much of the weekend after the 30-inch water main break.

DeKalb County spokesman Burke Brennan told Channel 2 Action News that they first had to clear out the water from the hole to determine the cause before they could begin repairing it. Major damage to the road and the sidewalk could still be seen well into Sunday morning.

Brennan says the pipe's age could have been a factor in the break.

Police were on the scene to re-direct traffic away from the area near DeKalb-Peachtree Airport.

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

The Pittsburgh Water and Sewer Authority says that a 30-inch line broke in the Oakland/Bloomfield area near the South Millvale Bridge at Morewood Street.

Two Port Authority stations and a portion of bus routes were closed after the water main break.

The break happened in North Oakland around 6 a.m. and the Neville Ramp, Herron and Negley Port Authority stations were closed as a result, our news partners at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette report.

The East Liberty station is as far as inbound buses can go and outbound buses will make it to the 26th Street Ramp, the Post-Gazette says.

Officials said the water main break exposed a 24-inch Equitable gas line.

“Public Safety is our No. 1 concern,” Pittsburgh Water and Sewer Authority Director of Operations Tom Palmosina said in a press release. “PWSA crew responded immediately and began isolating the leak.”

PWSA officials said that all efforts are being focused on the gas line.

January 6

Seattle, Washington

A large water main break on Sunday caused the closure of State Route 20 in Port Townsend near the ferry terminal.

Around 3 a.m., Police and Public Works responded to the 1800 block of Water Street where the break was reported near the Tides Inn and Suites.

Portions of State Route 20 pavement were raised several inches above the original road bed as pressure from the water pushed up to the surface. When crews first arrived on scene they found water running west down the road. At least one business, The Food Co-op, 414 Kearney Street, had flood damage as water rushed into the building.

The closure affects commuters traveling to the Port Townsend-Coupeville ferry route.  Detour routes for ferry traffic have been set up through city streets.

Water to at least a dozen businesses and residents was shut off but was restored by 3:30 p.m.

The Department of Transportation will not have materials available to begin repairing the highway until sometime Monday, according to Claudia Bingham Baker, WSDOT communications manager.

Detours will remain in place until crews determine the road is safe to reopen, which would occur Monday at the earliest.

The cause of the break is under investigation.

UK - Rail passengers face MORE travel misery as 300,000 litres of water flood  Thameslink tunnels and signal failure causes disruption for South West trains

Frustrated  commuters faced fresh travel misery today thanks to a signal failure outside  London Waterloo and flooding in tunnels between St Pancras and  Farringdon.

Flooding from the  burst water main has left Thameslink unable to run any trains between Farringdon  and London St Pancras International until at least the end of today’s  service.

Thames Water is  working to stop the massive leak and Network Rail said it has pumped out more  than 300,000 litres of water after the water main ruptured Friday and continued  to flood the tunnels over the weekend.

Thameslink  operator Govia said around 50,000 litres of water remained in the tunnel  yesterday and full train service will not resume until it is cleared and the  safety equipment and infrastructure are inspected.

A reduced service  is in place on the Thameslink line, which runs 140 miles from Bedford to  Brighton.

Commuters have  been forced to switch to buses or alternative train services to get to work as  some trips have been delayed by up to an hour.

Meanwhile South  West Trains were disrupted through the morning commute due to the signal failure  outside London Waterloo, one of the country’s busiest railway  stations.

It led to delays  for the second Monday in a row. Normal serviced resume at about 10am.

A signalling  problem at London Liverpool Street and a broken-down train at Gidea Park also  caused delays of up 30 minutes to trains between London Liverpool Street and  Shenfield in Essex.

Commuters suffered  delays and disruption every day last week because of signalling problems and  broken-down trains.

A fault affecting live train information across  the rail network compounded commuters’ misery, leaving passengers struggling to  track services amid the delays.

Burst water main floods West Side, leaving residents without water

Most of 11th Ave. between W. 47th and W. 49th Sts. was closed to traffic Friday after a water main broke, sending thousands of gallons of water bubbling up onto the street.

West Side residents were left without water Friday after a water main broke in Hell’s Kitchen, officials said.

Most of 11th Ave. between W. 47th and W. 49th Sts. was closed to traffic as city agencies scrambled to find the break that sent thousands of gallons of water bubbling up onto the street, witnesses said. A major trunk line was shut down for a short time, creating intermittent water service for the entire West Side, workers said.

More than 200 guests at the Ink48 Hotel on 11th Ave. were left without water for the entire night as the basement flooded, officials said.

Wednesday early morning break, which occurred around 2 a.m. at the corner of Elm Hill and McGavock pikes, near Nashville International Airport, sent water rushing into the street.

Metro Water Services spokeswoman Sonia Allman told News 2 workers were able to shut down the main and isolate the break. Crews worked for several hours rerouting the water.

Services have since been restored.

Allman said customers with reduced water pressure should conserve when possible. Those who have normal water pressure do not need to worry about cutting back their usage.

Two schools will be closed Wednesday: New Vision Academy on Plus Park Boulevard and Una Baptist Child Care on Old Murfreesboro Pike.

Ezell Harding Christian School on Bell Road in Antioch dismissed at 10 a.m.

Geyser Caused By Broken Water Line Damages Home in Oklahoma (Jan 21)

Residents in an east Tulsa neighborhood were startled early Wednesday morning by a water line break that sent chunks of concrete flying.

The six-inch water main break sent water shooting 90 feet into the air early Wednesday and damaged a home.

Around 4 a.m. a geyser shot 90 feet into the air near 41st Street and South 129th East Avenue.

The force of the break shattered the concrete road.  The pieces then rained down on houses and cars.

One resident said concrete chunks cracked the windshields on two of his vehicles.

A city worker responded shortly after the break to shut the water off but repairs have not started.

According to the City of Tulsa, about 15 homes are without water.

City of Tulsa water department workers closed a valve to stop the flow.

The homeowner told News On 6 he heard a loud noise and looked outside to see a geyser of water shooting at his home.

No word yet from the city on how long it will take workers to repair the break.

Car drives into hole caused by Tampa water main break

A car became submerged Sunday night after driving into a hole in a Tampa road caused by a water main break, police said.

Tampa police say the pipe burst on North 20th Street, between East Busch Boulevard and East Waters Avenue.

The road is closed and Tampa Water Department crews are at the scene, police said.

The car was partially submerged and the driver and her passenger were not injured, police said.

Ashley Guzman told My Fox Tampa Bay that she got out of the car after it drove into the hole and saw the ground cracking towards her. She yelled to her boyfriend to get out of the car and they watched as the street filled with water and the car sank further, she told the television station.

“I’m very glad we didn’t stay stuck in the car because if we had stayed stuck in the car it would have been real bad,” Guzman told Channel 13. “And I just thank God for that. We’re not hurt or nothing. It was just the car.”

The damage left 19 people in the area without water, said Brad Baird, Tampa’s Public Works and Utility Services Administrator.

Crews should have the pipe restored and water flowing to residents by noon, Baird said. There will then be a precautionary boil water notice in effect for 48 hours, he said.

The city is still assessing the road damage but similar holes typically take about two days to repair, Baird said.

Water Spews 200 Feet Into Air After Water Main Break in Northeast Philly

A water main break in Northeast Philly caused water to spew 200 feet into the air.

The 10-inch main broke around 7 p.m. Wednesday at Blue Grass Road near Grant Avenue. Workers with the Philadelphia Water Department were at the scene for hours trying to shut down water lines and isolate the break.

The main serves as a fire service connection used to feed a sprinkler system inside a nearby business. Workers had trouble reaching the main as it sits between an auto body shop and a car dealership. They also dealt with the freezing cold temperatures.

Unable to shut off the main, the workers left the scene late Wednesday night and plan on returning Thursday morning. Water could still be seen spewing into the air. So far no homes have been affected by the break.

Water Main Break Turns Toronto Street into Ski Hill (Jan 13)

A water main break in Toronto resulted in a large pile of snow in the middle of a street.

The pipe burst at around 5 a.m. on Leslie Street, north of Finch. Although crews managed to shut off the water, it was still spewing out with force several metres into the air in well-below freezing temperatures for some time, enough to coat power lines above the site with a layer of ice.

The result was, in effect, a natural snow-making machine, and the resulting pile is causing headaches for city crews who have to clear the mess and repair the pipe.

"Toronto works using three large tractors now, will be several hours just to cut through ... before they even get to pavement and can start‎ digging down to the broken pipe," Weather Network cameraman Mark Rozitis said a little after 11 a.m.

Police closed the road in both directions while the cleanup was ongoing, and access to the parking lot at nearby Old Cummer GO station was restricted, although the trains themselves were not affected.

The City of Toronto is currently under an Extreme Cold Weather Alert as the temperature reached -29 degrees Celsius with the wind chill Monday night and into Tuesday morning.

Oklahoma Water Main Break Destroys Gas Station (Jan 12)

A major water line break in north Tulsa Monday caused damage similar to what you'd expect from a tornado.

A geyser of water collapsed an overhang and took out several pumps at a gas station near an intersection.

The break was caught on surveillance video.  It started as a slow bubble.

The store's clerk watched as cars drove through the water, then the geyser shot concrete and water 30 feet into the air.

"I think 'what's going on'? I don't understand this happening," said Shahin Alam.  "I never think this could happen like this."

No one was injured.

The water is still bubbling from the ground.

A City of Tulsa spokesperson says the break was on a 12-inch line.  Repairs are expected to last until Tuesday morning at which time water service should be restored.

Water main breaks, causes Sioux City street to collapse

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (AP) — A break in a large water line caused a residential street to collapse and left more than a dozen homes without water service in Sioux City.

The 16-inch water main broke Sunday, causing an entire a block of road along Macomb Avenue to crumple, the Sioux City Journal reported (http://bit.ly/1tG5tst ).

Water service was cut off to 15 homes, but restored to all but one of them via a 6-inch backup Tuesday morning. Nine customers lost gas service until a temporary line could be installed.

Such breaks can happen in the winter, when temperature changes cause the ground to swell and contract. That squeezes and shifts underground pipes, which over time can rupture. But Jade Dundas, the city's public works director, said the pipe's age was a factor.

"We've got an aging infrastructure, so some of these incidents are going to happen regardless of weather," he said.

City crews were hampered in their response by temperatures near zero.

"It's just challenging," Dundas said.

Permanent street repairs will need to wait until spring or summer. For now, crews will put down a temporary road surface like crushed rock so residents along the street can drive to their homes. But Dundas said the frigid weather may stall when the broken pavement is removed and the work can begin.

"It's certainly something we don't look forward to taking on this time of year," he said.
