Massive steam pipe explosion in rush hour Manhattan leaves a gaping CRATER in the middle of Fifth Avenue

The explosion left a huge crater in the middle of Fifth Avenue between 21st and 22nd street where smoke and steam billowed from the ground and enormous pools of water formed at 6.40am on Thursday. The windows of the buildings nearby were showered in grey matter and police now fear people may have been exposed to asbestosÂ

The explosion was so powerful it turfed up pieces of the street and sent debris flying all over the streetÂ

The explosion happened at 6.40am on Thursday on Fifth Avenue between 21st and 22nd street in Manhattan
It was so powerful it turfed up part of the sidewalk and road and flooded the iconic street with water
A huge plume of smoke and steam rose from the blast site and shrouded the Flatiron Building
Con Edison, which services the pipe, is telling anyone who was exposed to bag their clothes and shower
A red tent was set up in the area and people who were covered in grey matter are waiting to be hosed down
No one was injured but the FDNY evacuated surrounding buildings as a precaution while they investigated
New York City's steam pipe system is the largest in the world spanning 105 miles of underground space
It rushes steam to more than 2,000 buildings around the city and provides them with heating and cooling
