Active volcanoes (Sep 28, 2012)

"Of course all volcanoes will explode, as this is going to be a very severe pole shift. What about the months and years preceding the pole shift? It is no secret that Mammoth Lake and the caldera of Yellowstone are warming up, and the populace has been prepared for these occurrences by the movie Volcano where there, in the middle of LA, lava is bubbling up. In fact, there is a fault line running from the approximate San Diego/LA area, up into the Sierras, and this is liable to rupture rather violently during one of the quakes that precedes the pole shift by some months. Volcanic eruptions from that area in the Sierras can be expected. Will Mount St. Helen erupt? All volcanoes that have been active within the memory of man will begin spewing and burping and oozing, and many that were not expected to become active will reactive. "   ZetaTalk - Feb 15, 2000

Canary Islands: Town flees volcano threat

The small town of La Restinga, on the Canary Island of El Hierro, was evacuated yesterday as a precaution against another undersea volcanic eruption.

The decision followed an eruption three miles off the coast on Monday, following thousands of small tremors since July. No damage was caused.

Canary Islands, El Hierro volcano - Spanish Town Evacuated Because of Volcano Threat

Officials say they are evacuating some 600 residents from a small coastal town on the Spanish Canary island of Hierro because of volcanic activity in the area.

Tuesday's decision by the regional government to evacuate La Restinga town came after the National Geographic Institute confirmed there was an undersea eruption some 3 miles off the coast Monday and that another eruption closer to Hierro island is possible.

No damage was caused by Monday's eruption.

Hierro, with 11,000 residents, has been on alert level 2 in a scale of 4 in recent weeks for fear of an eruption, but officials insist an eruption is not likely to be major.

The Canary Islands lie off the coast of northwest African and were formed by volcanic activity. Hierro has some 500 volcanoes.

Usa, Cleveland volcano - If the lava dome continues to grow in the summit crater, the possibility of an explosive event increases

...If the lava dome continues to grow in the summit crater, the possibility of an explosive event increases. With continued lava dome growth, lava may eventually overflow the crater rim to produce a lava flow and/or collapse to produce pyroclastic flows. Sudden collapse of the effusing lava could result in the generation of a volcanic ash cloud. However, lava may continue to erupt without an explosive event. It is possible that explosions from the summit crater vent could produce ash clouds that may exceed 20,000 ft above sea level. These events can occur without warning and may go undetected in satellite imagery for hours. However, lightning associated with significant ash-producing events may be detected within minutes using an automated alarm system. ...

Hawaii, Kilauea volcano - Lava flow resumes to southeast and northeast

The Hawaiian Volcano Observatory has released new pictures of the eruption on Puu Oo crater.

An overflight of the flow on Friday showed lava advancing about 1.6 miles to the southeast from the fissure and .3 miles to the northeast from another flow, scientists said.

The observatory also released a thermal image of the lava flow showing active flows near the fissure spreading out. The image shows a pahoehoe flow (smooth, swirling lava) moving southeast and the small flow to the northeast. An aa (rough, broken lava) field is seen below the active flows.

The volcano is going through a series of what scientists call deflation/inflation events as the volcano apparently fills with magma, which is then released. The deflation/inflation often coincides with lava pulses and pauses in the eruption.

Within Puu Oo crater, scientists said lava has filled a pond on the east side of the crater and a glow could be seen on the west.

El Hierro update - Eruption is growing in size

Ramon Ortiz, a vulcanologist specialized in Canary Island volcanoes and currently advising the authorities, says in ElMundo that  today’s eruption will be probably at a depth greater than  600 meter below sea level and about  5 km to the southeast of El Hierro.
Ortiz also said that the the  Harmonic Tremors which started this morning showed that the eruption had started...

...From what I can tell, based on the harmonic tremor plots. It seems that the eruption has been growing in size since it started well over 12 hours ago. This suggests that the eruption is growing in size. That also brings up the issue that new fissures might open, both into deeper ocean and on shallower depth and even on land without any warning at all...

Indonesia,  Six volcanoes on high alert, but no evacuations for now

Despite increasing activity at six volcanoes across the country, the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) says there is no need to evacuate residents for now.

BNPB spokesperson Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said on Sunday that the volcanoes on high alert were Mount Tambora in West Nusa Tenggara, Anak Ranakan in East Nusa Tenggara, Papandayan in West Java, Karangetang and Lokon in North Sulawesi, and Anak Krakatau in the Sunda Strait.

“These volcanoes are on alert level III, which means all volcanic parameters show that activities could develop into an eruption or disaster,” he told The Jakarta Post via text message.

He said that Anak Krakatau was producing five thousand tremors per day. A 2-kilometer exclusion zone has been set up around the volcano.

Sutopo said the volcanoes were being monitored 24 hours a day.
