Land Crumble in Mugu District - India Pushed Under the Himalayas!

Jan 15, 2014

MUGU: Following the use of large and heavy tools during the recent reconstruction of Mugu’s only airport (Rara/Talcha airport), the land and structure of the adjoining areas have sunk, locals complained.

The only airport of the district came into use around ten years ago. As repair and maintenance of the airport has been going on for the past four years, land and structures around have gradually sunk, endangering human settlement as well, grumbled locals.

They said that construction tools which were heavy and not environment-friendly were used, and this has further put their life in peril. Soil erosion and landslide also have terrorised them much.

“Reconstruction initiated some four years ago to upgrade the airport, has aggravated the security situation of our life and property,” said villagers. While cave-ins around the adjoining areas of the airport have locals worried, development activities have added to their anxiety. Locals say around five houses and the temporary tower of Nepal Civil Aviation Authority are on the verge of collapsing.

A large chunk of the land in the southern part of the airport has been affected due to rapid erosion and landslide during rainy season for want of an outlet.

Resham Rawal, secretary of Karkibanda VDC said a large chunk of land belonging to 300 households in the area have become prone to natural disaster.
