Myanmar: Unusual land sliding in Chin Hill forced over 100 years old village to move

Sep 1, 2013

Zarling village, a village of over a hundred years old, in Chin Hill faced unusual land slide and the residents may need to relocate, according to locals.

“We’ve experienced this kind of land slide over last 60 years but this time is the worst. We haven’t got rain for two days and then the sliding began. It started in August 23 evening and lasted the whole night. The whole mountain began to fall. In ten minutes, three houses in the village disappeared. Another three houses was destroyed. The people in the village are too scared to live here any longer.  There is a long crack in the middle of the village. The village is deserted as the people leave their big, strong houses. The villagers are now moving to Lmonpe, Laizo, Lonpi, and Phalam villages. The locals did not know what triggered the landslide, but such kinds of events do not occur in the region. Luckily, there’s no casualty in the village,” said Ramsum, 75 years old, a native of Zarling.

The village is of 130 years old and there live 82 households.

“At present, there are cracks in the middle of the village. At any time, the mountain can collapse. It will be worse if it is rain. If the people of Zarling desire, we are willing to move to a ward in Phalam. Various organizations also helped them, said Dr. Ba Maw, Minister for Social Welfare of Chin State.

“The villagers are now carrying their processions as much as they can and move to another place. People are very frightened about this incident. Most of them had never experienced this kind of incident,” said a man visited that place.
