"The causes of landslides are not a mystery to mankind. Layers of rock and soil such that rain running along a clay or rock layer can create a slippery surface for the weight of the layers above it is a common cause. A rock jumble from previous mountain building, broken or fractured rock easily dislodged. We have stated that the earthquakes man experiences between the periodic passages of Planet X can be considered aftershocks from the last passage, and this is true of landslides also. Mountain building rumples the landscape, so the land is not flat but has steep ravines and hill sides. Older mountain ranges are recognized for their rounded or smoothed appearance, because of frequent landslides distributing the rubble.

"As we approach another passage, another Pole Shift, the pace of landslides has picked up. Why would this be? Plates under pressure will put pressure on regions that contain rumpled hillsides and deep ravines, as these give more readily than strictly flat land, thus act as a weak link. In addition, due to the wobble, the weather has gotten more extreme, with drought and deluge increasing in extremes. Dry ground, suddenly flooded with rainwater needing to seek its level as runoff, will create internal water slides between the rock and soil layers that constitute the rumpled hillsides. Is there an early warning system that mankind could use? The trembles that soil about to slide emits could be detected, yes. These are not earthquakes, and have their own frequency. "

2 Skiers Killed in Avalanche Near Site of 2026 Winter Olympics

There have been 12 fatalities so far this month in the Italian Alps, 11 of which were caused by avalanches.

Key Points

  • Two skiers died, and one was injured, in an avalanche near the 2026 Winter Olympics location in Italy.
  • Officials attribute fatalities to "persistent weak layers in the snowpack" causing unpredictable avalanches.
  • Alpine Rescue urges "conservative routes" and carrying safety gear; "turning back...is the choice."

Two skiers have been killed, and another injured, in an avalanche at an Italian luxury resort nearby the location of the 2026 Winter Olympics, the Associated Press reported.

Tragedy Strikes Italian Ski Resort

The tragedy occurred on the afternoon of Sunday, Feb. 15, Sunday, Feb. 15, in Courmayeur, which is located in the northern part of Italy, about 135 miles from the Olympic Games in Milan. The skiers, whose identities have not been publicly disclosed, were reportedly off-piste at the time of the avalanche, meaning they were skiing off of the prescribed trail. Fifteen rescuers, along with three canine units and two helicopters, responded to the scene.

The event marks a grim landmark for Italy, with 12 people perishing in the Italian Alps so far this month alone. Eleven of those people were killed in avalanches. Officials from Alpine Rescue called the death count “a tragic toll that reminds us how critical and treacherous the current snowpack situation is.”
‘Persistent Weak Layers’ of the Snow Are to Blame

According to officials, the “main problem” in each of the fatal cases throughout February has been “persistent weak layers in the snowpack, often covered by fresh or wind-blown snow — conditions that make avalanches unpredictable and easily triggered even by the passage of a single skier or mountaineer.”

“There are many dangerous spots, and they are difficult to identify, even for experienced people,” they added.

Alpine Rescue encouraged skiers to choose “conservative routes” and to “always carry an avalanche transceiver” along with a “shovel and probe (and be sure you know how to use them)…When doubt is high, turning back isn’t just a choice — it is the choice: waiting for better conditions makes the difference.”

KABUL, Feb. 14 (Xinhua) -- Four people were killed and six others sustained injuries as a landslide struck a house in the eastern Afghanistan Kapisa province late Friday, provincial police spokesman Abdul Fatah Faiz said Saturday.

The natural disaster occurred in Shukhi village outside the provincial capital Mahmud-e-Raqi, the official added, without providing further details.

Most residential houses in Afghanistan, particularly in rural areas, are made of mud, making them vulnerable to landslides, rain and snowfall, occasionally resulting in loss of life and property damage.

A 58-year-old man was killed and two others were injured after a landslide struck a residential building near Rome, Italian authorities said on Friday.

The incident occurred at around 10.45 pm (2045GMT) late Thursday in the municipality of Formello, on Via Nazario Sauro street, following days of heavy rainfall that triggered the collapse of part of a hillside, ANSA reported.

According to initial reports, debris swept away a three-story building after a section of the slope and a retaining wall gave way. The victim was in his ground-floor apartment at the time of the collapse.

Two other residents, who were on the upper floor, were injured and transported to the hospital. Authorities said they are not in serious condition.

Firefighters, Carabinieri officers from the Cassia company, and emergency medical services were dispatched to the scene.

An investigation is underway to determine the exact cause of the landslide, as severe weather continues to affect parts of central Italy.

Toboso, Philippines — An alleged “sinkhole” was discovered in Toboso, Negros Occidental, about 500 meters from the East Negros Fault System (ENFS) on Thurs morning, Feb. 12, Mayor Richard Jaojoco said.

The crack in the ground, situated on a mountainside in Sitio Bairan, Brgy. Gen. Luna, has a radius of 30 meters and a depth of approx 1.5 meters, Hospicio Carbajosa Jr., Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction Management Officer of Toboso, said.

Residents noticed the phenomenon around 7 a.m. after reportedly feeling the earth shake.

Carbajosa noted that the alleged “sinkhole” is not currently a cause for alarm as it is located away from residential houses and is about 500 meters from the national highway.

A Mines & Geosciences Bureau team will visit the site to conduct an assessment.

Antalya, Türkiye — Kumluca-Kemer highway in Antalya was closed to traffic due to landslide.

Dents and landslides occurred on the highway connecting Kemer and Kumluca districts.

Due to the approximately 10-meter pit on the road, transportation in the region is provided from a single lane.

CHENGDU, Feb. 8 (Xinhua) -- Continuous rainfall-induced infiltration that softened mudstone on a high-steep slope caused a landslide in southwest China's Sichuan Province, and no direct link has been found between mining activities and the disaster, according to an investigation report released on Saturday.

The report, published by the provincial department of natural resources, identified the disaster in Jinping Village of Junlian County, under the city of Yibin, as a compound natural disaster involving a sudden high-position landslide that evolved into a long-distance debris flow.

The landslide occurred at 11:50 a.m. on Feb. 8, 2025, leaving 10 people dead, 19 missing and two injured, with direct economic losses exceeding 6 million yuan (about 862,193 U.S. dollars).

Torcross, UK

Part of the A379 coast road near Torcross in Devon has collapsed after sea defences were damaged during last month’s storms.

Residents woke up on Tuesday 3rd February to find a section of the road had washed away.

Posting on social media, the owners of The Start Bay Inn at Torcross said: “It’s a mess, like a bomb has gone off.⁣ The road to the pub on the Leyside is filled with debris and not drivable.”

Councillor Laurel Lawford said the damage was “really, really bad”.

“I’ve spoken to someone who has sent their drone over and they estimate there is approx 300 metres of damage. It’s very bad, and the drop down to the beach from the destroyed road is about 15 feet deep, I would guess…”
