Reports of a "bright light" and an "orange glow" were received by police across Scotland and the north of England around 9.40pm.
The Met Office tweeted: "Hi All, for anyone seeing something in the night sky, we believe it was a meteorite."
A spokesman for Strathclyde Police said the force had been "inundated" with calls about a bright object in the sky across the west of Scotland. A Durham Police spokeswoman said a number of calls came in around 9.45pm from concerned members of public who had seen a "bright light or a fire in the sky" and believed it may have been incidents involving an aircraft. "
It has been confirmed with air traffic control that there are no incidents of aircraftin difficult and nothing registered on radar," she said. "
The sightings are believed to be either an asteroid burning out or similar which has been restricted to the upper atmosphere only." Grampian Police said reports of people seeing a "flare or a bright object with a tail" were received from across the region. And Dumfries and Galloway Constabulary said numerous calls were made about a "large ball of fire in the sky" across Annandale and Eskdale.
One user wrote on the force's Facebook page: "It was awesome to see! Really big and bright!" Hundreds of people took to Twitter to report similar sightings across Scotland and the north of England. People described seeing a bright fireball moving across the sky with a large tail.
The Kielder Observatory also reported the sighting of a "huge fireball" travelling from north to south over Northumberland at 9.41pm. The Observatory posted on Twitter: "Of 30 years observing the sky #fireball best thing I have ever seen period."

‘What the heck was that?’ Fireball Soars Over Calgary (Jul 22)
The Rothney Observatory reports a bright fireball was seen over Calgary at 1:24 a.m. Tuesday.
Sightings were reported as far as 450 kilometres north of Calgary.
Scores of people took to Twitter and emailed the Herald about the sudden flash of light.
Jesse Shan was on his south-facing Marda Loop balcony when he saw what appeared to be cloudless lightning just southeast of the city.
“I saw a massive flash to begin with; I was like ‘woah,’ ”
He saw a blue-white streak, followed by a burning orange orb that moved slowly, lingering for about five seconds before vanishing.
“It was almost like it entered through out of nowhere and then exited again."
Other Calgarians reported a green flash, comparing the sight with falling debris or a large meteor.
Dr. Phil Langill, who directs the University of Calgary observatory guesses the rock was about a metre in diameter.

Fireball Over Eastern U.S. (Jul 17)
A bright fireball was seen across the Mid Atlantic on July, 17 2014. So far, this fireball has been reported by nearly 100 witnesses on the American Meteor Society (AMS) website.
The fireball was seen from primarily Virginia but witnesses from Washington DC, Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, North Carolina and West Virginia also reported seeing the phenomenon.
Dan Perjar, a software developer at North Carolina State University, captured the 4-second video of the fireball with his dash cam installed in his car. He said the video was shot while he was driving on I-440 from Cary toward N.C. State.
The AMS reports came in between 9:15 p.m. and 10:45 p.m. on Thursday. The time code on Perjar's video indicates he captured to fireball around 10:17 p.m.
An AMS user in Selma identified as Jason B. said the fireball "was bright enough to ruin our night vision for a moment."
"It turned orange/red (streamlined) and then turned extremely bright green with many fragments breaking off," he wrote.
Alex K., an AMS user from Concord, N.C., described the fireball as "the most interesting one I've ever seen."
"It was green, flashed as if parts were combusting or breaking off, and the trail was green as well," he wrote.

Fireball Blazes Across Southern U.S. Skies (Jul 12)
A fireball streaked across southern skies around 9 p.m. Saturday and split apart near a rising Supermoon.
Mike Prendergast initially thought it was plane. “But it was moving so quick. We probably saw it for a good 15 seconds because it was coming right at us. It was one light coming, but then it broke into two. We could see a tail on it before it slowly melted away.”
The Internet is clogged this a.m. with accounts from folks who espied the light show from North Texas all the way to Florida.
From Frisco comes this account: “10 seconds I was facing north the object was traveling north to south fast moving didn’t notice colors Extremely bright, witnessed two or three fragments It was still light out but it was really bright.”
The American Meteor Society has so far received 57 reports from skywatchers in Alabama, Mississippi, Texas, Louisiana and Florida.

Fireball Blazes Over SE Australia (Jul 10)
A fireball lit up the sky on Thursday night, with reports of a "massive shooting star” flooding in from Victoria and New South Wales.
Callers to talkback radio stations reported seeing a bright object travelling east to north about 9.45pm. Some callers said they initially thought it was a burning plane.
Radio station 3AW listener John said he pulled over while driving in Keilor Park to watch the light show.
“It was really impressive,” he said. “It had the flame and the intense burn. Just as it was falling away it broke up. I’d say it was a little asteroid or a comet.”
A man at the Queen Victoria Market reported seeing a meteor going from “horizon to horizon”.
“He said it didn't get quite as bright as the moon and was mostly white with a bit of red at the end," Mr Le Marquand said.
"He said it went for 30 seconds, which is an awful long time. Usually the ones we see in the sky are the size of dust and only last a second."

Fireball Over Southern Manitoba (Jul 9)
There are reports of a fireball streaking through the skies of Southern Manitoba.
Scott Young with the Manitoba Museum tells CJOB they got some calls from the Interlake just before 11 this morning.
“Saying, is there something going on? I saw this big trail of smoke in the sky and then we had a big explosion, but I didn’t hear any sounds. What’s with that? Well we think what happened is a little asteroid or a big version of a meteor came into the atmosphere somewhere over Central Manitoba, and exploded.”
Young says they can’t pinpoint where it was yet, but they suspect it was in western Manitoba, so they’re asking for anyone who saw it to let them know, so they can triangulate a location.

A fireball originating from space has been spotted streaking over the UK on camera.
The ‘bolide’ meteor was spotted over the West Country, Wales and the West Midlands in the early hours of this morning.
The rock did not cause any damage – but it serves as a reminder of how vulnerable our planet is to enormous objects hurtling through space.
Dave Jones of the UK Meteor Observation Network (UKMON) said it was by far the largest fireball ever spotted by the observatory.
Some eyewitnesses are reported to have said it was green in colour.
And it was said to even cast shadows due to its brightness
Bright Fireball Seen Across the Black Hills and Great Plains (Jun 5)
Around 9 p.m. on June 5, George Gladfelter saw a large fireball flying level and leaving a long trail of plasma, heated air and sparks.
"It was spectacular," he said. "When I saw it, it was going from east to west."
Other residents also reported seeing what they believed to be a meteor that night.
Bill Cooke of NASA's Meteoroid Environment Office said the closest match he could find to the event described was a bright fireball seen over Iowa on June 5 at 11:22 p.m. central time, not far off from the time of the local sightings.
The American Meteor Society received two visual sightings of the fireball as well. Doppler reports also showed 34 sightings of a fireball between 9 and 10 p.m. across Wyoming, Colorado, South Dakota and Nebraska.
Gladfelter originally thought it was about 10,000 to 20,000 feet in the air, but if it really was visible in places like Colorado too, "that means it was a lot bigger than it looked," he said.

Mysterious Fireball Swirls Over UK Skies (June 5)
This astonishing video of what appears to be a ball of flames swirling in the sky were taken by a schoolgirl after she spotted it out of her bedroom window.
Katie Real, 11, saw the bizarre fireball in the sky above her home in Northampton after going to draw the curtains on Saturday night.
She rushed to get her laptop computer and filmed a 39-second clip showing the bright object apparently performing loop-the-loop in the evening sky.
The schoolgirl's mother, Fiona Fearon, 30, said: 'Katie was watching a film on her laptop in her bedroom when she went to close the curtains and she saw this weird fireball in the sky.
'She quickly pressed a button on her laptop to film it, and when she showed it to me I was just amazed.
'Initially we thought it could be a plane on fire, but it appeared to be dancing across the sky. It was an amazing site.
'It’s very weird - it looked like a ball of fire moving around in the sky.
'It just seems to sort of float there, spin around and then disappear behind a clump of trees.'
Mrs Fearon said she rang an airfield nearby the following day to ask if the ball of light was anything to do with them, and was told it was not.
She added: 'I’ve read about strange lights appearing during thunder storms called ball lightning, but there wasn't lightning on Saturday night so it’s a mystery.'
Katie said: 'I was looking out of my window when a large glowing ball of light caught my eye. It was moving very fast.
'It was pretty scary and I’d love to know what it was. I’ve never seen anything like it.'

Large Fireball Reported Over Southeast Australia (May 25)
Central Victorian residents have been urged to check their CCTV or webcam footage following a large meteorite fireball spotting near Daylesford and Yandoit on Sunday evening.
Dr Andy Tomkins, a Senior Lecturer at the School of Geoscienes at Monash University, says there were reported sightings of a loud, white flash at ground level at around 6:30pm on the worldwide meteorites news website.
Dr Tomkins encourages people to check their CTTV cameras from Sunday evening in hope of locating the meteorite.
"We can use that to figure out the direction that the meteorite came from and where it's likely to have ended up on the ground, particularly if there is some sort of time stamp on the video that really helps us nail it down as well."
"We use video from multiple directions from where people have seen it from multiple angles to triangulate down toward the ground position."
He says people who heard a loud bang on Sunday evening would have been within close proximity to its landing.
"Usually it gets brighter the closer you are to it, then a bang, the boom people heard is when you're really close to it, people can usually see a smoke trail if they're fairly close."
