Cop’s dashcam captures amazing moment METEOR falls to Earth
Published 24th April 2019A SPACE rock travelling at speeds of up to 45,000 mph was captured on a police officer’s dashcam while he was on a routine patrol.
Patrol officer, Nathan Kutz was carrying out an extra sweep of ocean City’s 130th street area after receiving a request from a worried resident but instead of catching a local villain he caught an intruder from outer space on his dashcam.
A spokesperson for Ocean City Police Department said: “Just before midnight, the meteor flew through the sky and was captured on PFC Kutz's dash cam.
“We are used to our dash cams catching the bad guys but the fact that it caught this beautiful display of science is incredible.”

Meteors - also known as shooting stars - typically hit speeds of up to 45,000mph when they enter the earth’s atmosphere.
As they head towards the surface of the earth they create a streak of light caused by friction with the atmosphere.
Meteors become visible between about 75 to 120 km above Earth and can vary in size and composition.

If you saw a vivid object race across the Jersey Shore sky Tuesday evening, you’re not alone.
More than 350 spotters reported seeing a fireball across portions of the Mid-Atlantic, possibly originating above Vineland, New Jersey, streaking over Cape May, and disappearing over the ocean east of Delaware, according to a reporting log on the American Meteor Society website.
Commenters on the Cool Cape May Facebook page reported seeing the vivid fireball and feeling shaking.
“Saw it. It lit up the sky and was incredible to see. Right place right time I guess,” Jerry Inderwies Jr. wrote.
It was also spotted in Pennsylvania, Delaware, Washington, D.C., Maryland, and Virginia.
The fireball, another term for a very bright meteor, was described as a mixture of light blue, green, orange, yellow, and white with a glowing trail, according to the AMS reports.
“It sparkled brilliantly and seemed to fall apart,” one spotted wrote.
The organization says “several thousand” fireballs occur each day, but they are rarely seen.
“The vast majority of these, however, occur over the oceans and uninhabited regions, and a good many are masked by daylight. Those that occur at night also stand little chance of being detected due to the relatively low numbers of persons out to notice them,” a fireball FAQ from AMS notes.

This fireball was captured on April 9, 2019 at 4:01am LT (08:01 UTC) facing south from Cabo Rojo,PR and towards the Caribbean Sea. Also seen is the Lajas Aerostat and Alpha Centauri.
I also included one taken just the other night on April 8, 2019. I thought this one was pretty big until I captured the one last night. Big difference !!!

Large meteor explodes in sky over Siberia in third major space fire...
By The Siberian Times reporter07 April 2019Bright and noisy with a long, sparkling green and yellow tail, it was filmed by multiple observers in Krasnoyarsk region.
The phenomenon caused fear on the ground.
‘I panicked as it sounded and looked like a plane on fire, I got really scared of the noise and shine it created’, said a local woman from Krasnoyarsk, the large industrial city.
‘I pulled a phone out of a pocket, but it flew across the sky so fast that I only caught a long white trace it left.’
Some residents said the meteor was blindingly bright, akin to the light and sparks created during intense welding work.
It split into several parts before disappearing in the sky somewhere over Irkutsk region, east of Krasnoyarsk.
The local ministry of emergencies confirmed it registered a meteor, and said that it didn’t pose a threat to people or infrastructure.
It is the third major meteor or meteorite event in four months.
On 18 December a meteor exploded close to Russia’s Kamchatka peninsula with a force ten times more powerful than the Hiroshima atomic bomb, according to NASA.
On 15 March a meteorite slammed into Krasnoyarsk region with local reports saying it ‘warmed the air’ and ‘shook the ground’ after streaking across the sky in a green, yellow and orange fireball.
This came down close to the site of the Tunguska Event in 1911 when a meteor exploded in the atmosphere wiping out 80 million trees, and with the estimated force of 185 Hiroshima bombs.
THE THIRD MAJOR SPACE FIREBALL INCURSION IN FOUR MONTHS
Expert Viktor Grokhovsky from Ural Federal University, studied the videos of the 6 April event and concluded that the recent space guest was a bolide.
‘It exploded quite high in the sky somewhere over Irkutsk region,’ he concluded.
'It was a bolide that moved with a speed higher than the New Tunguska meteorite (LINK) from Evenkia.
‘Its structure must have been quite loose given that it split into fragments.’
The latest meteor incursion was spotted by dash cams and eye witnesses around 7 pm on 6 April.

Bright fireball that flared up in the night sky surprising northern Florida turns out to be a meteor
- A bright object falling out of the sky that surprised social media users in Florida turned out to be meteor on Saturday night per the National Weather Service
- People throughout the Sunshine State captured the blueish glowing meteor light up the night sky and posted their surprise and delight online
- The National Weather Service said it there were unconfirmed reports of the meteor landing near Perry, Florida, about 55 miles southeast of Tallahassee
Just before midnight on Saturday night, people in northern Florida were treated to a surprising bright light in the sky that turned out to be a meteor.
'Did you see it? A meteor was caught on GOES Lightning Mapper (GLM) around 3:52Z or 11:52 PM ET!' confirmed the National Weather Service out of Tallahassee on Twitter.
The meteor's flash was captured on the Geostationary Lightning Mapper, a satellite taking hundreds of images per second to map lightning storms, according to CNN.
'Meteors coming into the Earth's atmosphere happen fairly often but we don't always get to see them,' said CNN meteorologist Haley Brink.
'Nowadays we have so many satellites in space and cameras on the ground that these events are becoming more and more visible to the general public.'
Social media users in Florida captured the flare-up late Saturday night with various posts that registered their surprise.
'This isn't normally what I post on my channel, but tonight I was out on my way home, and I saw something pretty crazy,' said a user who runs EVE Pro Guides - EVE Online PVP and ISK Guides YouTube channel. 'Luckily my dashcam caught it, so I'll let you watch right here.'

Stargazers looking for Aurora Australis mystified by bright green flash

They were waiting for the Aurora Australis, but amateur photographers were left guessing after seeing a bright green flash light up the Tasmanian sky.
Amateur photographer Leoni Williams captured a shot of the green streak about 9:30pm on Thursday by "accident".
Overlooking Pipe Clay Lagoon, toward Clifton Beach in southern Tasmania, Ms Williams had her camera facing south in anticipation of an Aurora.
"I was very lucky to capture this bright green object before it disappeared over the horizon," Ms Williams said.
"I'm still not sure what it was. I didn't actually see it with the naked eye as I wasn't watching. I had just set the camera on 30 seconds and pushed the shutter and turned back to my phone.
"I would imagine it was pretty quick. I nearly missed it because it was at the end of the exposure."
Photo sparked social media debate
Ms Williams took to social media to try and find out what she'd captured on camera.
Opinions varied, with some thinking it was a shooting star, a fallen satellite or even a UFO.
Spotted from the Huon Valley to Dodges Ferry, other photos began popping up on social media.
Eventually, it was shared on social media page Australian Meteor Reports.
"It's definitely a meteor," page administrator David Finlay said.
"That flash that's been captured is a very, very bright meteor — it's what we'd call a 'fireball'. It probably lit up the countryside."
Mr Finlay — a former industrial chemist who has been studying astronomy from an very early age — said the flash was created by a "small rock from space, blazing through the atmosphere, creating friction with the atmosphere".
"It glows and ionises gas — that's what you see as this fireball blazing through the sky.
"If it actually survives atmospheric entry and lands as a rock on land, that's what we call a meteorite — only if it makes it to the ground."
Why is it green?
As for the bright green glow, Mr Finlay said it had to do with the elemental components of the meteor.
"The green is produced by a combination of the nickel and iron in the meteor," he said.
"It's probably just a normal rocky meteor but it would contain flecks of metal in the rock, producing that colour. It's very cool.
"It's what we colloquially call a 'fish squisher' because it's over the ocean," he said.
Professor Simon Ellingsen, the head of physics at the University of Tasmania, said it was possible the object was manmade space debris rather than a meteor.
"[The colour] is almost certainly because of the specific elements and minerals in the object," he said.
"It probably wouldn't have looked that green to the naked eye [because] digital cameras are so good at picking up the light."
He said while it wasn't unusual to spot a meteor or space debris over Tasmania, this object would have been a special sight to see.
"The sort of rule of thumb is if you go outside to a clear, dark sight, you'll see a shooting star, so to speak, about every 10 minutes or so," he said.
"This one that's been caught is bigger than normal and more spectacular than you normally get.
"This photographer was obviously in the right place at the right time."
