Two people sustained moderate to serious injuries when a building collapsed in the early hours of Monday morning, paramedics said.
According to police, the Iphi Ntombi building randomly collapsed at 02:30 on Pretoria Road in Midrand. “Police were patrolling around 02:30 on Monday morning and they heard a loud noise. Upon investigating, they found a collapsed building,” said police spokesperson Captain Disebo Selepe.
Two people sustained injuries ranging from serious to moderate. According to paramedics, the injured people were treated on scene. “Both patients were treated on scene before they were transported to hospital for further medical care,” said Netcare 911 spokesperson Santi Steinmann.
Police are currently investigating the events that led to the incident. “The police are still at the building to investigate what caused the collapsed. A case has been opened but with no charge, as police are trying to determine the facts,” said Selepe.
According to reports, the collapse happened several hours after an alleged ATM bombing at the building. Many residents felt tremors after hearing a big bang which sounded like an explosion.
