Up to 40 people have been evacuated after a building began sinking in Sydney's west.
The two level building, which has apartments above a row of shops, has partially collapsed into a construction site on Liverpool Road in Enfield.
Emergency services were called the to scene at around 9.20pm AEDT and found the commercial premises with structural damage and gas leaking.

It is understood construction work is being carried out near the building. (9NEWS)

The gas leak has been contained and structural engineers are no assessing the site.
Liverpool Road has been shut between The Boulevarde and Cobden Street, with Fire and Rescue NSW placing an exclusion zone around the building.
Police are advising motorists to avoid the area where possible.
