In less than a week, I have noted 3 ships capsizing, 1 in Baja, MX, July 4th.....another in Jayapura, Papua and the most recent in Russia in the Volga River.

Across the globe we hear more and more stories of fisherman who can't bring their boats out to do their work.  The seas are angry and unpredictable.  Here''s another story of a fishing boat carrying 27 tourists with 16 Mexican crew members struggling in the sea when the ship capsized.

California residents rescued in fatal boat accident in Mexico

Fishing boat sinks in Baja

One person was reported dead and seven others missing Monday afternoon after a fishing boat carrying 27 U.S. tourists and 16 Mexican crew members capsized in rough seas in the Sea of Cortez, officials said.

The 27 tourists, most of them from California, were aboard the charter vessel Erick when a sudden storm struck the area about 2:30 a.m., hurling people into the ocean in the vicinity of San Luis Island, about 60 miles south of the Baja California port of San Felipe, the Mexican Navy said in a statement. The body water in which the ship capsized is also known as the Gulf of California.

"The weather was calm, and then a strong wind came,"  Dora Winkler, a spokeswoman with the Port of San Felipe, told the Los Angeles Times.

Some of the first people rescued -- two tourists and the boat's cook -- were plucked from the water by a Mexican fishing boat, according to Winkler.

All of the 16 Mexican crew members were rescued, she said. The tourist who died was only identified as an adult male. Initial reports said six people were missing; officials later raised the number to seven.

A U.S. Coast Guard helicopter from San Diego was assisting the Mexican navy as rescue crews scoured the area for survivors, said Coast Guard Petty Officer Pamela Boehland.

She said the Coast Guard was told by the Mexican Navy that most of the passengers were from Northern California and that one was from Port Angeles, Wash. The search was launched after one of the victims swam to shore and alerted Mexican officials, Boehland said.

"He swam to shore and actually walked to the nearest location," Boehland said, adding that she was unsure whether it was a town or village.

Mexican officials said all of the survivors were wearing life jackets. They were taken to local hospitals and appeared to be in good condition, the Mexican Navy said.

Officials: 2 die, 3 in hospital after boat capsizes in Jamaica Bay

Updated October 3, 2015 12:35 AM

Two people have died after being rescued from the choppy waters of Jamaica Bay on Friday night when their boat capsized off Floyd Bennett Field in southeast Brooklyn, police said.

Five people were rescued, and the two who died had been taken to Beth Israel Medical Center in critical condition after being pulled from the water, an NYPD spokesman said.

An FDNY spokesman said three others were taken to Coney Island Hospital in stable condition after first responders combed the marshy shoreline and marine units searched the bay looking for the five who went overboard.

The fire department received the call at 7:45 p.m., the spokesman said. All those who were rescued suffered varying degrees of hypothermia, and other injuries -- some were found on land and some were plucked from the water.

Further details about the victims, the type of boat involved and what caused it to capsize were not immediately known, the spokesman said.

Dozens of people are feared drowned after an overcrowded riverboat carrying about 200 people capsized in India’s northeastern state of Assam.

Local Indian police officials said the motorized boat sank on the Kolohi River near Assam state capital Gauhati on Monday.

Sources say the boat sank after its engine failed to function in the middle of the river and hit against the post of a bridge on the river.

Due to recent monsoon rains, Kolohi river is swollen and is flowing faster than usual.

Most passengers reportedly swam to safety or were rescued by local residents.

The rescue operation by local rescuers and Indian security forces was hampered by nightfall and would be resumed on Tuesday morning.

Meanwhile, regional police officer Lankeshwar Sarma said, "Many swam to safety or were rescued, but between 20 to 30 people are still missing hours after the accident."

Some survivors said there were approximately two dozen people below deck when the boat overturned.

Accidents are common on rivers across India where boats are often overloaded and lax safety standards. In 2012, 108 people died after a ferry capsized during a storm in Assam.

Four Infants, 10 Children Killed As Refugee Boat Sinks Off Greek Coast, Killing 34 Total

September 13 2015 12:00 PM EDT

Update: Greece's coast guard has reported there were 34 fatalities among the refugees aboard the boat that sank in the Aegean Sea Sunday, according to Reuters. The dead included four babies, six boys and five girls, the coast guard said.

The boat, which was ferrying 112 people to Greece, sank about three miles off the coast of Farmakonisi, an island in the Aegean Sea, according to the Athens News Agency. Four infants and 10 children were among those who drowned in the aftermath. The death toll is thought to be the largest recorded from a single incident in Greek waters since the recent refugee crisis began, Reuters reported.

Coast guard officers said they rescued 68 others from the capsized boat while 29 swam to shore on their own, according to Agence France-Presse. The coast guard is still searching for four refugee children who went missing in a separate boat sinking Saturday.

News of Sunday’s tragedy came shortly after Greece’s interim prime minister, Vassiliki Thanou, lobbied for a more robust European policy for the refugee influx and defended Greece against criticism of its handling of the crisis.

Cargo ship sinks off Sulu; 9 rescued
Sep 12th, 2015

Nine crew members of a cargo vessel that sank off the coast of Parang in Sulu province were rescued by the crew of a Philippine Marines patrol boat last Tuesday afternoon.

A military report reaching this city said the marine gunboat was conducting barrier patrol south of Parang when they saw the sinking cargo vessel.

Authorities identified eight of those rescued as Andy Adari, 41; Yahsin Arasani, 50; Bartek Araji, 35; Sudan Salimap, 27; Damil Said, 20; Mohammad Alif, 20; Reyner Fullo, 31; and Rodel Fernando, all residents of Zamboanga City.

The report said M/L Haynoline was carrying 76,000 liters of diesel and assorted automotive parts and accessories for the Tawi-Tawi Nickel Corporation located in Tumbagaan Island in Languyan, Tawi-Tawi, when it sank three miles west of Bunga Point in Parang.

According to the report, the cargo vessel left the port of Barangay Cawit in Zamboanga City Monday en route to Languyan when it encountered big waves causing it to sink.

According to the boat captain, Basher Addari, the cargo vessel was overloaded with 76,000 liters of diesel, automotive parts and other cargo, which probably caused the boat to lose balance.

Addari also told the rescue team that the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) in Zamboanga City did not inspect their vessel before they left the port.

The PCG has to check all cargo and commercial vessels before they are allowed sail to ensure the safety of the crew and passengers.

Eight Found Dead After South Korea Fishing Boat Capsizes

SEOUL — At least eight people died and about 10 were missing after a South Korean fishing boat capsized, a coast guard official and media reports said on Sunday.

The boat was found capsized earlier this morning, after it lost radio contact late on Saturday, a coast guard official in the southern island of Jeju said by telephone.

The bodies of eight people were recovered in the waters near the island of Chuja, which lies between the mainland south coast and Jeju, the official said.

Three people were pulled from the water and airlifted to hospitals, the coast guard official said, adding they were expected to survive.

Another coast guard official said the boat was initially reported to have taken 18 to 19 people, but an unknown number of others were also believed to be on board.

Most of them were on a fishing expedition on Saturday to Chuja, a popular fishing area, the official said.

President Park Geun-hye has called on the rescue and recovery services to do their utmost in the search for the missing, her office said in a statement.

In April 2014, a passenger ferry, Sewol, sank off the southwest coast killing about 300 people, most of them children on a school outing, triggering a national outrage over what was seen as an ineffective rescue operation.

Vessel sinks near Sitka, leaking nearly 30 gallons of oil

9:24 PM September 2, 2015
ANCHORAGE –

Multiple agencies responded to a sinking vessel near Sitka Wednesday. The vessel ran aground Tuesday evening and spilled “10-30 gallons” of oil, according to U.S. Coast Guard officials.

The Pacific Venture, a 58-foot seiner, rolled over around 2 a.m. on Wednesday and sank in an area approximately 25 feet deep and roughly half a mile from the mouth of the Indian River, according to the Coast Guard.

The owner of the boat reported 600 gallons of diesel fuel and 70 gallons of hydraulic and lube oils were on board when the boat sank, Coast Guard officials say. The Southeast Alaska Petroleum Response Organization (SEAPRO) deployed a boom around the boat between noon and 3 p.m.

“Responders are working diligently to minimize the impact on the environment and the community,” said Bob Mattson, State On Scene Coordinator, in a statement. “Federal, state and local partners continue to work alongside one another for an effective response.”

4 dead, 2 missing after fishing boats capsize off Nagasaki Pref

NAGASAKI —

Four people are dead and two others missing after six fishing boats capsized in southwestern Japan early Tuesday, the Japan Coast Guard said, as a low pressure system brought strong winds and heavy rain to the region.

Five fishing boats capsized off Tsushima Island in Nagasaki Prefecture and eight crew members were thrown into the sea.

Seven of the eight crew members were pulled from the water but four were later confirmed dead, while another remains missing.

Two of the boats requested help around 3:40 a.m., according to the coast guard.

Elsewhere, a squid-fishing boat capsized off the coast of Shimonoseki, Yamaguchi Prefecture, around 6:40 a.m., leaving one of two crew members missing.

Coast guard patrol vessels were searching the area for the missing.

The atmosphere around the Tsushima Strait was unstable as southerly warm and moist air seeped into a low pressure system, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency.

Man dies after capsize tragedy off the Irish coast

September 1, 2015

A man has died after spending up to five hours in the water with nine others, after their boat capsized off the coast of county Wexford, Ireland.

The 10 people, all wearing lifejackets, were rescued after being in the water for four to five hours after their 18ft leisure craft boat overturned near the Saltee Islands after a fishing trip.

The alarm was raised with Kilmore Quay RNLI at 11.15pm on Saturday by a person known to the missing party after their boat, which had set off at 4pm, failed to return as expected.

Kilmore Quay and Fethard RNLI lifeboats and the Saltee Islands passenger ferry, the An Crossan, crewed by three more Kilmore Quay lifeboat volunteers carried out an extensive search.

The An Crossan spotted the upturned hull and 10 people, one woman and nine males including a teenage boy, in the water, half a mile south of the Great Saltee Islands at around 12.30am.

Weather conditions at the time were overcast and there was a force 2-3 south westerly wind blowing.

It was when the passenger ferry’s search light went out temporarily that its crew members heard shouting from the sea.

The boat is understood to have overturned in choppy water when a breaking wave stove in the windows in the wheelhouse and swamped the vessel.

The crew of the An Crossan pulled all 10 people from the water and onto the ferry.

One man in his early 70s, who was in need of urgent medical attention, was transferred onto the Kilmore Quay lifeboat and treated by lifeboat crew members until the Irish Coast Guard Rescue 117 helicopter from Waterford arrived.

He was airlifted to Waterford University Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

The nine other people were transferred to Kilmore Quay on the passenger ferry where they were then brought into the lifeboat station, medically assessed and made comfortable until an ambulance arrived and took them to Wexford General Hospital.
