In less than a week, I have noted 3 ships capsizing, 1 in Baja, MX, July 4th.....another in Jayapura, Papua and the most recent in Russia in the Volga River.

Across the globe we hear more and more stories of fisherman who can't bring their boats out to do their work.  The seas are angry and unpredictable.  Here''s another story of a fishing boat carrying 27 tourists with 16 Mexican crew members struggling in the sea when the ship capsized.

California residents rescued in fatal boat accident in Mexico

Fishing boat sinks in Baja

One person was reported dead and seven others missing Monday afternoon after a fishing boat carrying 27 U.S. tourists and 16 Mexican crew members capsized in rough seas in the Sea of Cortez, officials said.

The 27 tourists, most of them from California, were aboard the charter vessel Erick when a sudden storm struck the area about 2:30 a.m., hurling people into the ocean in the vicinity of San Luis Island, about 60 miles south of the Baja California port of San Felipe, the Mexican Navy said in a statement. The body water in which the ship capsized is also known as the Gulf of California.

"The weather was calm, and then a strong wind came,"  Dora Winkler, a spokeswoman with the Port of San Felipe, told the Los Angeles Times.

Some of the first people rescued -- two tourists and the boat's cook -- were plucked from the water by a Mexican fishing boat, according to Winkler.

All of the 16 Mexican crew members were rescued, she said. The tourist who died was only identified as an adult male. Initial reports said six people were missing; officials later raised the number to seven.

A U.S. Coast Guard helicopter from San Diego was assisting the Mexican navy as rescue crews scoured the area for survivors, said Coast Guard Petty Officer Pamela Boehland.

She said the Coast Guard was told by the Mexican Navy that most of the passengers were from Northern California and that one was from Port Angeles, Wash. The search was launched after one of the victims swam to shore and alerted Mexican officials, Boehland said.

"He swam to shore and actually walked to the nearest location," Boehland said, adding that she was unsure whether it was a town or village.

Mexican officials said all of the survivors were wearing life jackets. They were taken to local hospitals and appeared to be in good condition, the Mexican Navy said.

The dead also included two women and four men.

Witnesses said the boat had sunk despite a calm sea and light winds.

Meanwhile a six-month-old migrant baby was found dead off the Aegean coast after another migrant boat bound for Farmakonisi capsized on Dec. 8 at around 10 p.m. The Turkish coast guard reportedly rescued 18 migrants including six children after that capsizing.

The Turkish coast guard recovered the bodies of the children including a baby and were still looking for two other migrants reported missing state-run Anadolu Agency reported.

The dead body of a 5-year-old girl washed up on a beach in the Aegean province of zmir while six other refugees were also found dead after an inflatable boat capsized off zmir&rsqu;s Çeme district.

The body of 5-year-old girl Sajida Ali washed up on the Prlanta Beach in Çeme on Dec. 7. Ali’s body was taken to the zmir Forensic Institute for medical examination.

Geographically located between war-torn Syria and Iraq in the southeast and the EU member states of Bulgaria andGreecein the northwest Turkey has become a transition point for foreign migrants looking to illegally cross into the EU in an endeavor to flee the violence in Iraq and Syria well as gain a higher standard of living.

The wave of migration across the Aegean Sea has often resulted in injuries and even deaths due to either the capsizing of migrant-carrying boats or the abuse of refugees by human traffickers.

The number of migrants saved after making failed attempts to cross via the sea from Turkey to Europehas increased by over 500 percent in 2015 compared to last year.

In 2014 the number of migrants rescued by Turkey’s Coast Guard and local institutions was 14961 in 574 separate incidents according to Prime Ministry figures.

So far this year the number is 79489 migrants in 2133 incidents. In addition more than 200 smuggling gangs have been targeted in security operations launched by the authorities over the last two year

Victim of fishing boat sinking identified

One is dead but two were rescued by the Coast Guard after their fishing boat sank 12 miles off Thacher Island on

Thursday night.

The deceased is identified as fisherman David "Heavy D" Sutherland of Gloucester by witnesses and friends in mourning.

A good Samaritan aboard the Foxy Lady notified watchstanders at the Coast Guard Sector Boston command center about 3 p.m. that the fishing boat Orin C was disabled and needed a tow.

The Foxy Lady, captained by Phil Powell, began towing Orin C toward shore, but high wind and waves impeded the effort, according to the Coast Guard. A large wave reportedly crashed over Orin C’s bow, causing the boat to flood.

Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Boston, who had been monitoring the tow on VHF radio, launched a 47-foot Motor Life Boat crew from Station Gloucester.

The crew arrived on scene, passed a pump to the Orin C crew, hooked up tow, and made way toward Gloucester against 30 knot winds and 8-foot seas, the Coast Guard said in a statement

While initially effective, the pump was eventually unable to keep up with flooding coming over the boat’s bow and it began sinking quickly.

Per protocol, the Coast Guard crew broke tow and maneuvered swiftly back toward Orin C for the three fishermen.

The plan for safest rescue from the boat was to have each crew member enter the water and be recovered one at a time. The first rescue went as planned, but the boat began sinking too quickly so the remaining two crew members abandoned the boat together.

Four missing in Aegean after small boat sinks

Posted, 2015-12-03
Kathimerini

Greek rescuers were seeking four migrants missing after a small boat with seven people on board sank off the eastern Aegean Sea island of Farmakonissi. The coast guard said three survivors have been pulled out of the sea alive after Thursday's accident. Greece is at the forefront of Europe’s immigration crisis, with more than 700,000 people having crossed over so far this year from nearby Turkey, in frail boats provided by smuggling gangs charging high fees. Hundreds have drowned in the effort. On Tuesday, a 3-year-old boy died when a boat carrying 25 migrants ran aground off the eastern Greek islet of Ro. The remaining occupants were unhurt.

One killed, 22 missing after boat sinks in DR Congo's Lake Kivu

November 30 2015

One child died and 22 people were missing Monday after their boat sank in Lake Kivu in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo, officials said.

Nearby fishermen helped pluck 25 other passengers from the water after the commuter vessel capsized in the middle of the vast lake, said Jean-Bosco Bahati, the navy commander for North Kivu province, who visited the scene of the accident.

"A child about five years old has died, 25 were saved and 22 are missing," Carly Nzanzu Kasivita, the provincial land affairs minister, told reporters.

The captain said tragedy struck after the boat began taking on water around midday. "I saw huge waves beating against the window. The water came into the boat and we capsized soon after," Bujiriri Kitambala told AFP, still visibly shaken by the incident.

The boat ran a shuttle service between the towns of Bukavu and Goma, the respective capitals of South and North Kivu provinces, which lie at the southern and northern ends of the lake.

Shipping accidents are frequent in the DR Congo, whose people rely on the many waterways for transport. Boats are often overcrowded and lack the appropriate safety equipment, while there are few signposts on the waterways.

2 Dead, 5 Rescued After Pontoon Boat Capsizes In Waters Off Manasquan

MANASQUAN, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) — Two people are dead and five others are recovering after a pontoon boat capsized off the coast of New Jersey Friday afternoon, New Jersey State Police said.

The Coast Guard said the boat capsized in Manasquan Inlet, sending multiple people into the water, CBS2’s Christine Sloan reported.

A Coast Guard official told WCBS 880 that a call came in reporting the capsized boat around 1:40 p.m.

As CBS2’s Dave Carlin reported, dozens of fishermen, surfers and residents on the shore at Point Pleasant Beach had watched over the boat and its occupants since tall waves swamped it.

“One wave came up behind it almost tipped it, and as soon as it hit, it kind of sat there, and the next wave came up behind it and tipped it the rest of the way. And it looked like there were seven people in the water,” Dan Gallagher of Bridgewater told the Asbury Park Press.

Two people were rescued by good Samaritans, four people were rescued by a Coast Guard boat, and one person was hoisted into the air by a NYPD helicopter, officials said.

Photos of the rescue show a Coast Guard boat and several helicopters hovering over the area not far from shore.

“The helicopter lowered the basket and a couple of divers to look underneath. A little later, a basket went down – somebody or something was pulled up. A couple of people since then – they’ve said one or two; I think the word they used was victims – were taken to the hospital,” said witness Allan Cleary.

Some onlookers even tried to help.

“Luckily, there were a lot of boats around that were able to help people out, and a lot of the surfers were out there too picking people up, and then eventually, the helicopters came and I think they might have gotten the last couple of people,” Gallagher said.

New Jersey State Police said two people were pronounced dead following the rescue.

The men who died were identified as Alex Osadchy, 66, and Grigory Klokishner, 74, both of Philadelphia.

State police said four other victims were taken to Ocean Medical Center in Brick Township with non-life threatening injuries and one victim refused medical treatment.

It all left many people numb.

“And I say to myself and to other people also, why the heck does the pontoon boat go in the ocean? Because I’m a fisherman and I know they shouldn’t be. A pontoon boat is not made to be in the ocean,” said witness John Janoski.

All seven victims are male. Authorities have not yet released their identities.

Members of a group that identified themselves as family members of the victims did not want to talk on camera about their loved ones and the events leading up to the accident.

Though the cause of the capsizing is still under investigation, state police said strong currents could have played a factor

Pontoon boat carrying seven capsizes in frigid New Jersey waters, killing two men

  • The pontoon boat capsized Friday in rough waters in the Manasquan Inlet
  • Several Good Samaritans came to the rescue, pulling people from the water

Two people are dead and five others injured when their pontoon boat capsized in rough waters off the New Jersey shore on Friday afternoon.

The boat, which was in the Manasquan Inlet, was reportedly hit by a tall wave which almost tipped it, and then another one, which sent its seven male occupants careening into the chilly ocean.

Good Samaritans in boats and on surf boards were able to reach the victims and bring some to safety before an NYPD rescue helicopter arrived, according to CBS New York.

Cargo Ship Hua Chun 19 Sinks in the Yellow Sea

China Moderate // Boat Accident
BEIJING -- Authorities said the cargo ship Hua Chun 19 sank in the Yellow Sea about 70 nautical miles off the shore of Qingdao. The ship departed from Qingdao port with a cargo of 4,000 tons steel products. Apparently, the cargo shifted and reduced the stability of the ship.

Local officials immediately organized a search and rescue operation and within the first hour located five seamen who had symptoms of hypothermia. They were rushed to a hospital for emergency treatment. Two drowned seamen were found later, while four others remain missing.

An investigation has been ordered to determine the cause of the tragedy. An oil collection vessel was dispatched to the scene since oil spilled from the sunken vessel. The area is being monitored for more oil leaks.

General cargo ship Hua Chun 19 sank in Yellow Sea

The general cargo ship Hua Chun 19 capsized and sank in Yellow Sea off Qingdao, China. The cargo ship left the Qingdao port with cargo of 4,000 tons steel products, which shifted and reduced vessel’s stability. The general cargo ship Hua Chun 19 capsized and sank on 70 nautical miles off the shore. The local authorities organized search and rescue operation immediately and within the first hour succeeded to find 5 seamen, who had signs of hypothermia and were transported to the local hospital for medical treatment. Later the SAR operation found 2 drowned seamen, while another 4 are still missing. The search operation continue looking for the other missing seamen.

“We continue searching for the missing seamen, but chance for finding them alive is small”, said participants in rescue operation. “According to the rescue seamen, the vessel capsized in a minute and everything happened too fast to consider abandoning the ship, so many of the seamen might be put in water trap inside the ship’s wreck”, added they.

The local authorities started investigation for the root cause of sinking. At the scene of the accident was dispatched also oil collection boat, as there was an oil spot and water pollution after sinking. The authorities are monitoring the scene of sinking for more oil leaks.

The coastal freighter Hua Chun 19 (IMO: 9958652) has overall length of 90.00 m, moulded beam of 13.00 m and maximum draft of 4.00 m. The vessel was en route from Qingdao to Guangdong in China.

Nine refugees drowned and at least another three were missing after their inflatable boat sank off the Greek island of Kos early on Tuesday, the coastguard said.

They were the latest of nearly 3,500 deaths at sea this year among people making desperate bids to flee war and poverty and to reach Europe, according to UN figures.

Seven people were rescued, and emergency crews were still trying to recover all the bodies of the people who died from the capsized vessel, a coastguard official added.

The boat, which came from nearby Turkey and capsized overnight, was spotted by the crew of a Finnish ship participating in operations by Frontex, the EU's border security agency.

More than 600,000 refugees fleeing Syria, Afghanistan and other war-torn countries have arrived in Greece from Turkey this year, risking the short but perilous sea crossing, often on inflatable rafts. Hundreds have drowned.

Greece, struggling with its own economic crisis, has said it does not have the funds to care for all the arrivals before they move on to other destinations including Germany and Sweden.

Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras has said financial aid could be offered to Turkey to register and process the refugees on its territory instead. Tsipras is visiting Turkey on Tuesday and Wednesday to discuss the worst refugee crisis since World War Two.

22 dead as two boats sink in eastern Aegean Sea

Updated 8:36 AM ET, Fri October 30, 2015

(CNN)Twenty-two people died Friday when two boats sank in the eastern Aegean Sea, a spokeswoman for the Hellenic Coastguards told CNN.

The spokeswoman said 144 people had been rescued.

The Aegean Sea is bounded by Turkey on the east and Greece on the west. Greece -- with its extensive coastline, which is difficult to patrol -- is a common destination for people seeking to enter the European Union.

And some Greek islands lie in the eastern part of the sea, close to the Turkish coast. Once people reach them, they have officially set foot on European Union soil, and they can file claims for the right to stay in the EU.

A tide of families

The Greek spokeswoman said 19 people died Friday off the coast of Kalymnos, a Greek island near the Turkish city of Bodrum. She said 138 people were rescued there.

And she said three people died and six were rescued off the coast of Rhodes, a Greek island also near the Turkish coast, but further south.

Europe has been overwhelmed this year by a tide of families fleeing war in Syria, as well as poverty and violence in other countries in the Middle East and North Africa.
