Northern Coast Suffered High Tide Flood
The Supermoon phenomenon, which made the distance of the moon seemed closer by hundreds of feet caused high tide flood (rob) in various points of Jakarta northern coast, for three consecutive days.

The head of RT 08/01, Kamalmuara, Nunung, said Supermoon phenomenon triggered high tide flood on Jl Kamalmuara, Jl Tegal Alur Kamal, and Jl Kapuk Kamal with 20-30 centimeters inundation height.

"These last 3 days the sea level kept rising, therefore some roads are inundated," said Nunung, Monday (5/7).

The high tide often comes at 7.00 PM until 03.00 AM which 30 centimeters high. The water is starting to ebb however, at 03.00 AM until 06.00 AM. If it is raining the water level rise further until 40 centimeters because the rain is mixed with the high tide.

"Right now the water is beginning to ebb. At the same time on the road the inundation is still 40 centimeters high, because of the high tide and the pump suction capability is not in balance with the amount of water," she explained.

The Head of Extreme Weather Sub Unit Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics (BMKG), Kukuh Sri Budiyanto detailed, since Friday (5/4), the Supermoon phenomenon has occurred and will keep going until the coming Thursday (5/10) , with the high tide level reaching 1 meter until 1.1 meters. "The high tide peaked at 10.00 PM until 11.00 PM," uttered Kukuh.

After the Supermoon on Friday (5/11), the moon will enter a new moon phase until Thursday (17/5), by then the high tide level will decrease. "But it will increase to 1 meter again by Friday (5/18). Every full moon which is twice a month the high tide will rise," he explained further.

The effect of the Supermoon affected various points at northern coast of Jakarta, as has happened in Penjaringan Sub-District. "It happens once in 18 years," he stated.

The Supermoon phenomenon is not in correlation with the rain in Jakarta today. Rain is an atmospheric phenomenon while Supermoon is an astronomical one. "The rain in Jakarta will keep falling until the beginning of June which is a transition period from rainy season to arid season. Local rain tends to fall in South Jakarta and North Jakarta. There is an increase to the temperature, from 29 degrees Celsius to 30 degrees Celsius, as a consequence it is raining today", he finished.

Flood victims in Nigeria are eight

May 7. At least eight people were killed and dozens were seriously injured as a result of flooding in Nigeria. According to local radio, heavy rains and gale-force winds destroyed hundreds of homes in the state of Zamfara in the north-west African country.

Last week, tropical storms destroyed more than a hundred houses in the neighboring state of Sokoto. According to local authorities, the life of the whole region is seriously compromised.

Floods every year include Nigeria in the rainy season, which lasts from April to September. For example, last year claimed the lives of the element of over 100 people. The reason for the large number of flood victims in Nigeria is the overcrowding of large cities, many of whose residents live in slums, whose drainage systems are poorly organized, or simply absent. Many of the hastily constructed homes easily washed away by streams that fell as rain water, which does not leave the flooded areas due to the accumulation of garbage in the slums, ITAR-TASS reported.
