ONE person is dead and five others reported missing as heavy rain and the sudden rise of floodwaters wreaked havoc across the Western Division,
From Sigatoka to Rakiraki emergency services were stretched in what has been described as the worst floods ever.
At a DISMAC meeting in Lautoka last night Divisional Police Superintendent Jope Ralulu said the first victim was a woman from Lomolomo.
The five missing were in a vehicle swept away by raging floodwaters along the Nadi Back Road.
Intermittent torrential rainfall from Wednesday night turned towns and communities into lakes as fast rising floodwaters early Friday morning submerged homes, swept away cars and people and sent home owners and their families seeking refuge atop the roofs of their homes.
Hundreds were rescued from as early as 3am and as late as 2pm many others who called The Fiji Times hours earlier, were making desperate pleas for help over the phone.
DISMAC itself sent out a plea for boats to help with the rescue efforts.
One witness reported he saw a car with two passengers engulfed by swift flowing waters along the Nadi Back Road.
Dharmend Narayan said he assisted in the rescue of five people in a vehicle ahead of the Hilux "which went under water before they reached it."
Many said they were unprepared as water entered homes.
Last night Nadi, Ba, Tavua and Rakiraki were still under water.
As rain continued incessantly, there were fears of renewed flooding at midnight last night.

Worst floods 'in living memory' in Fiji
Three people have died and dozens are missing after Fiji has been hit by massive flooding for the second time in three months.
There is widespread damage on the island of Viti Levu, particularly in the towns of Nadi, Ba and Lautoka and the flooding left dozens stranded on buildings and forced the cancellation of flights in and out of Fiji.
The water came in heavy and fast, inundating streets and buildings in just a matter of hours and the rains came just two months after a flood that left eleven people dead.
But eyewitnesses say this storm appeared even worse - with twice as much water in half the time.
“This is the worst in living memory and the damage is unbelievable,” says resident Dorsami Naidu. “Every shop in Nadi would have been affected and a lot of shops would have lost all their items.”
The body of a man was recovered from a vehicle that was swept away by strong currents near Nadi and the body of another man was recovered from a creek.
An estimated 2000 people have sheltered in evacuation centres in the Western District - many woken in the middle of the night by the rising floodwaters.
“It really caught us by surprise – I called police emergency at 3:48 to tell them that water was rising, we need help,” says evacuee Taina Wati.
Among those who took shelter was a 57-year-old woman who died due to complications from diabetes, and authorities are being criticised for a slow response.
Many were left stranded in the second storey of buildings by the rising waters.
“There has been no real disaster relief work in helping people get out of this situation or help them in any way,” says Mr Naidu.
A severe flood warning remains in force around major rivers, streams and for low-lying areas on the western side of the mainland and another low pressure trough is on its way – though this one does not look like it will pass directly through Fiji.
People are being warned to brace for more rain in the coming days.

A 20-year-old man died after he was washed away by strong currents in Ba on Saturday.
His death followed that of a 29-year-old father of two who died when his family's van was swept away.
Heavy rains from Wednesday caused rivers to burst their banks in the west of the main island Viti Levu.
Water levels were higher than those experienced during a six-day deluge in January which claimed 11 lives, meteorologists said.

Fiji is on a platelette that is supposed to lose out in the crunch, per the Zetas. Very scary for the folks living there, I'm sure.
http://www.zetatalk.com/info/tinfx372.htm
The islands at the plate borders in this region do not do well during the plate adjustments to come. The primary devastation will come during the hour of the pole shift, but the devastation has started during the 7 of 10 adjustments. Samoa rides on the Pacific Plate, which is pushing under the eastern edge of the Indo-Australian Plate, and as this process continues and accelerates, approaching the pole shift, will virtually disappear. The Solomon Islands do not fare much better, for the same reasons. Tonga and New Caledonia ride high. The little Fiji Plate, as the recent sinking indicates, will be a loser, pushed down into the notch as the Pacific Plate presses ever westward.
