Sinkhole swallows section of street in SF’s Pacific Heights (4/22/16)

A cavernous sinkhole opened up in San Francisco’s Pacific Heights neighborhood Thursday evening after a large sewer line broke beneath the street, officials said.

...An 18-inch sewer main broke beneath the pavement, though Sheehan said they still weren’t sure exactly when the pipe ruptured, and the free flowing liquid eroded the soil supporting the concrete above leaving a gap. Gravity eventually took hold and the pavement collapsed.

Water main break, steam pipe leak in Manhattan

A stretch of 6th. Ave. in midtown Manhattan has been closed following a water main break and steam pipe leak in the area.

NEW YORK (FOX 5 NY) - A stretch of 6th. Ave. in Midtown Manhattan was closed for hours on Monday following a water main break and steam pipe leak in the area.  There were worries that part of the road could collapse due to the issue.

The FDNY and Con Edison were on the scene and some buildings were evacuated.  The pipe burst around 9:40 a.m. near West 57th and 58th Streets.

MTA admits sewer pipe leak to blame for stinky Brooklyn subway station

A sickening smell has tormented straphangers at a Brooklyn subway station for months — and the MTA has admitted a sewer pipe leak is to blame.

“It smells like a combination of garbage and poop — all the time,” commuter Alice Osborn, 22, said of the Myrtle/Wyckoff L train station in Bushwick.

The city Department of Environmental Protection is “working to mitigate” the disgusting problem, MTA spokesman Kevin Ortiz said.
People who use the station said the nasty odor has been an unwanted presence for a couple of months now.

“You see people holding their noses,” said Osborn, who has her own strategy for avoiding the smell. She said she commutes into Manhattan on the L for work but rides the M from the station on some mornings, when she doesn’t want to face the stink, even though the travel time is longer. The M departs from a separate elevated track.

Complaints about the stench on Twitter go back to November, but they started surging in February. The tweets bemoan the station’s “potent, awful smell” and describe it as the “strong smell of human sewage.”
“If you smell something, say something,” quipped Twitter user @costibizzle.

Workers on the L platform said the odor appeared to be coming from the tunnel that leads into the station on the Canarsie-bound side.

A stream of murky water is often seen flowing into the station between the tracks on that side and down a drain about one-third of the way down the length of the platform. The smell also gets stronger when a Canarsie-bound train arrives with a whoosh of air from the tunnel.

The DEP didn’t respond to questions about the leak, but workers have been on Wyckoff Ave. in recent days clearing a clogged sewer pipe that one said was related to the problem.
