Two workers killed following water main break in Boston
OCTOBER 21, 2016
BOSTON (WHDH) - Two people are presumed dead after a water main break flooded a trench where several workers were working.
A private construction crew was working on a brownstone on Dartmouth Street between Montgomery and Tremont when a water main break sent water into the trench. Several workers were able to escape the scene, but two could not.
Recovery efforts are continuing in the South End as workers are currently working on securing the structure before the bodies can be recovered.
Witnesses described a panicked scene as water rushed into the street, with workers escaping and then rushing to try to save their colleagues.
Workers were “visibly shaken” after the incident.

Fire officials say a “recovery operation” is currently underway.
“I think it’s going to be quite a while,” before emergency crews can recover the deceased, said Boston Commissioner William Evans.
Police, fire, and federal workplace investigators are currently on the scene.
Water is turned off in the area, the road has been blocked off, and city officials are asking people to avoid the area.
According to the commissioner, the hole was roughly 12 feet deep.
The Boston Fire Department has requested a response from the Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA).
Officials are currently investigating the structural integrity of the sidewalk and street.
Boston Police have confirmed that Dartmouth Street will be closed to traffic from Tremont to Warren and is expected to be closed through the evening commute. Police ask the public to avoid the area.

The blast of the fracture was so strong, shock waves could be seen off the coast in the sea.
Guests described a 'mini-tsunami' that swept through the hotel's restaurant during breakfast.
The hotel's reception area, gardens and four swimming pools were also swamped by the deluge.

Vehicles are CRUSHED in car park after burst water main causes flooding misery
Engineers have raced to fix the leak which has left hundreds of houses without water and power across south east London
CARS left in an underground car park overnight have been crushed after a burst water main flooded a town centre.
Shocking new images show battered cars crushed against the roof of the car park in Crayford which was submerged underwater following the water leak which has left hundreds of house holds without water and power.
The vehicles can be seen with their windscreens smashed and impaled against the ceiling after the water caused polystyrene insulation under the Townhill Square car park road surface to expand and rise by four feet. This forced the vehicles trapped inside upwards into the roof.
The car park was damaged during overnight repair work on a burst 12-inch water main in Crayford Road.
The pipe had initially burst on Tuesday afternoon and repairs were ongoing when it burst again on Saturday night causing chaos.
Hundreds of homes in Greenwich, Bexley and Crayford, as well as large parts of Dartford, in Kent, have been left without water due to the issue while a high street has also been submerged underwater.
Motorist Sadia Farzana Chitra, 42, who lives in a flat in Townhall Square, told KMFM: “Everything is completely submerged. My car park is at the back of the block and that is totally underwater — about five or six cars are completely gone.
“It is very devastating. My car and my neighbour’s car, which is a van, are damaged and the firefighters took a picture of them for us and told me it could be a write-off.”
Water supplies were returned to normal this afternoon with the water levels now receding.
Thames Water senior operations manager Danny Leamon said: “This is an extremely difficult repair, due to the location and depth of the pipe, and we are very frustrated to have suffered this major setback.
“The second burst and flooding is now under control and water pressure should be returning to normal for customers.
“We’re really sorry for this added disruption our work is causing, and are doing everything possible to get things back to normal as quickly as possible.”
A spokesperson for Gallions Housing Association said:”We have been on-site throughout the day assisting Thames Water, the fire brigade and the police following the burst water main in Crayford town centre.
“All Gallions residents are safe, have clean water and there has been no water ingress into anyone’s home.
“Water has damaged some people’s cars in the car park in the basement, and Thames Water have advised that they will have officers based at the library tomorrow to get all of the details from those affected.”
Images of Crayford Water Retail park show it submerged in flood water with roads and paths around the centre impassable due to the deluge.
Transport for London had urged motorists to avoid the area and warned of long queues across south-east London.
Amazed residents shared their images on social media of the flooding which included cars floating in a town centre car park.
