Film Crew Catches UFO Rising from the Sea (Video)

June 27, 2012 02:25 AM EDT

A strange UFO, apparently rising from below the ocean waves near an unidentified beach, was caught on film by a professional camera crew making a promo video. What is it?

The video, created by Chris Ward Productions, catches a somewhat bizarre scene of a woman's legs lolling in a sandy beachfront. What they're trying to convey is anyone's guess, but what happens next is truly weird.

A small, dark object suddenly flies past the HD camera lens and out of sight in a matter of seconds. As the publisher says, the strange object was not noticed until the footage was viewed in post-production.

The UFO seems to emerge from beneath the waves just offshore, and, as the video plays out, the activity is slowed down several times to just 5% speed. The segment ends with a zoomed-in clip at slow speed which does little to help identify what this object could be or where it emerges from.

It doesn't look like a bird, and there are no insects which can leap so quickly from sea water. It's obviously not an airplane or a balloon.

So, what is it?

UFOs Exist, Say 36 Percent in National Geographic Survey

PHOTO: A study from National Geographic Channel found that 80 million Americans - or 36 per cent - are certain alien spaceship exist.

If you believe in UFOs, you may be in better company than you think.

Thirty-six percent of Americans -- about 80 million people if the survey applied to the whole country -- believe UFOs exist, and a tenth believe they have spotted one, a new National Geographic poll shows.

Seventeen percent said they did not believe in UFOs, or Unidentified Flying Objects, and nearly half of those surveyed said they were unsure. Perhaps reflective of today's political climate, there appears to be near-universal skepticism of government — nearly four-fifths of respondents said they believe the government has concealed information about UFOs from the public.

The study, commissioned in anticipation of National Geographic Channel's "Chasing UFOs" series premiering Friday night, was not all serious, said Brad Dancer, National Geographic's senior vice president for audience and business development. Respondents were asked whether President Barack Obama or Republican challenger Mitt Romney would handle an alien invasion better (Obama won 65 percent in that contest) and which superhero they would call in to fight off the attack (the Hulk beat out Batman and Spider-Man).

"We were trying to have a little fun and see if pop culture references have had an impact on people's beliefs," Dancer said. "It's intended as a fun survey of public opinion."

Hollywood, he added, may have contributed to the belief — held by 55 percent of Americans, according to the study — that Men in Black-style agents threaten people who report UFO sightings. As movies portraying aliens become increasingly convincing, they may subconsciously affect people's attitudes, he said.

A growing number of Americans have come to believe that Earth is not the only planet in the universe hosting life, he said. The study showed that 77 percent of Americans believe there are signs that aliens have visited Earth.

While the study may be used as ammunition by the vocal minority of UFO enthusiasts, Dancer said that it leaves open the precise definition of the term UFO.

"UFO doesn't necessarily mean alien spacecraft," he said. "There are things that are unexplained. They're interesting because they're unknown. People love a mystery."

The study, conducted by the polling firm Kelton Research, found that more Americans believe "The X-Files" best represented what would happen if aliens invaded Earth than any other movie.

The study, in which a random sample of 1,114 Americans 18 and over was surveyed, also asked what respondents would do if aliens visited Earth. Nearly a quarter said they would try to befriend the extraterrestrials, 13 percent said they would lock themselves indoors, and just one in 20 said they would "try to inflict bodily harm."

Those numbers did not surprise longtime UFO investigator David MacDonald, director of the non-profit Mutual UFO Network, who said the idea of contact with extraterrestrials has become commonplace in the last few decades.

"We have grown up with 'Star Trek,' 'Star Wars' and 'Battlestar Galactica,'" MacDonald said. "We're at the point where we'd say 'What planet are you from? Oh well, let's have a beer.'"

Top UFO Sightings of June 2012 (Video)

June 26, 2012 08:10 PM EDT

It may be a little early, but the top UFO sightings of June 2012, compiled by paranormal YouTube researcher AnonymousFO, is always a welcome sight. And this month doesn't disappoint as the usual suspects are rounded out by some real surprises.

The best feature of these collections is AFO's uncanny ability to ferret out sightings not covered extensively by the usual media channels, including Gather.com.

In June, there are several examples, including a classic flying saucer, multi-colored flashing lights and all, filmed over the night skies of Lake Okeechobee, Florida on June 12, and pictured here.

Sometimes really great videos have to be skipped, like the one made on June 4 in Colorado Springs, because of the vulgarity used by the cameraman. It might be expected if a person is really startled, but it makes reporting all the more difficult.

AFO manages to edit out the profanity with some neat audio overdubbing skills, but, as it turns out, that particular sighting is being chalked up to a skydiving team on Army manuevers.

But the sighting over London on June 21 is a real head-scratcher. It seems to be the first UFO of its kind ever photographed. Shaped like a giant cross, it seems unperturbed by the Black Hawk helicopter zooming through the air not too far away.

So, as usual, in most of these sightings, the questions still remains:

What is it?

Morphing UFO over Moscow Goes Viral (Video)

June 23, 2012 12:35 AM EDT

An amazing video going viral on YouTube shows what looks like a saucer UFO morphing shapes as it flies over the night skies of Moscow.

The video, posted by YouTuber olegen77, starts tracking a light in the distant sky over the rooftops of the city and then zooms in for a closer look.

The lights on the unidentified flying object look as though they wrap around a circular, disc-shaped craft.

As the three minute video plays out, the object seems to morph into a different shape as now multi-colored lights shift to align with a transformed contour. How is that possible?

The video is drawing a lot of comments, mostly agreeing that the UFO is not like any known aircraft they've ever seen. Its resemblance to an airplane at various points only deepens the mystery. How can it change shape?

This object seems similar to others seen on videos posted from around the Moscow area in the past two years, as well as other regions of the world.

Can they be related?

Catamaran' UFO Filmed over Russia (Video)

June 20, 2012 12:01 AM EDT

A weird, new kind of UFO, shaped like what can only be described as a catamaran boat hull, was filmed in the cloudy twilight skies over an unidentified city in Russia. What is it?

The video shows a cloudy sky over the city as a flashing light slowly makes its way over the rooftops. As the camera zooms in and the clouds fall away, the shape of the unidentified flying object is more clearly defined.

As the video rolls, the flashing lights appear to encircle the craft's hull, which, at one point, reveals oblong rails on either side. Hence the comparison to a catamaran, which is similarly shaped.

But, clearly, there are no jets, airplanes or helicopters which have that kind of shape and there is no evidence that the wingless, motorless UFO is spewing exhaust or showing the properties of those kinds of aircraft.

Because there is no audio at all on the video, it's impossible to tell if the aircraft is making any engine sounds.

So, what is it?
