Active volcanoes (Sep 28, 2012)

"Of course all volcanoes will explode, as this is going to be a very severe pole shift. What about the months and years preceding the pole shift? It is no secret that Mammoth Lake and the caldera of Yellowstone are warming up, and the populace has been prepared for these occurrences by the movie Volcano where there, in the middle of LA, lava is bubbling up. In fact, there is a fault line running from the approximate San Diego/LA area, up into the Sierras, and this is liable to rupture rather violently during one of the quakes that precedes the pole shift by some months. Volcanic eruptions from that area in the Sierras can be expected. Will Mount St. Helen erupt? All volcanoes that have been active within the memory of man will begin spewing and burping and oozing, and many that were not expected to become active will reactive. "   ZetaTalk - Feb 15, 2000

El Hierro volcano - The volcanic tremor measured at El Hierro remains at very high levels, beaches from Puerto Naos until La Restinga will be closed to the public because of  an accumulation of toxic gases

The volcanic tremor measured at El Hierro remains at very high levels and in sharp contrast to visible activity, feeding speculations and fear about new volcanic vents opening up somewhere on or near the island. Some fear such a new vent could be located in the El Golfo Bay, near Frontera, since most of the (deep) earthquakes in recent days are concentrated beneath the northern sector of the island. However, so far, these earthquakes are very deep (ca. 20 km) and do not point towards an immediate eruption in this area, rather are intrusions of dykes in the upper mantle beneath the island. At La Restinga at the southern tip of the island, we could observe a slight increase in activity from the submarine vent ca. 1 km off the coast today: every 15-30 minutes, brownish plumes of water could be seen upwelling, flattening the ocean surface and somtimes producing dark stretches of floating mud(?) and foam (not steam!) in a circular area around the vents. The Instituto Volcanológico de Canarias (INVOLCAN) has been recording highly elevated levels of Helium and CO2 gas dissolved in the water around La Restinga, another sign that the submarine eruption is still in progress.

PEVOLCA, the committee of Emergency services, Scientists and Authorities has decided that the beaches from Puerto Naos until La Restinga will be closed to the public because of  an accumulation of toxic gases. La Restinga has no problem as it is more an open space according to the scientists. We regularly display the La Restinga air quality, which was indeed good this morning.
PEVOLCA also said that the 4 km radius in the Las Calmas see remains closed to navigation. Only the Guardia Civil and both Oceanographic ships are allowed in the eruption waters.

Iceland, Katla volcano - More than 500 Quakes Near Katla Volcano in October

A total of 512 earthquakes hit below the Mýrdalsjökull icecap in south Iceland in October underneath which the volcano Katla lies, according to the Icelandic Meteorological Office. Approximately 380 thereof had their epicenter in the Katla caldera. he other earthquakes either had their epicenter in the western part of the glacier or below the sub-glacier Hafursárjökull south of the Katla caldera, visir.is reports. On October 5, a sharp series of earthquakes began in the northeastern part of the Katla caldera, just south of Austmannsbunga. The largest quake in the series, which hit shortly after 4 am was approximately four points on the Richter scale. A total of seven earthquakes that measured three points or more on the Richter scale were picked up by sensors in the area last month. A few were just below three points and tens of quakes were stronger than two points on the Richter scale.

La Restinga suffer high concentrations of helium Thursday November 17, 2011
Scientists have detected a significant enrichment of helium and carbon dioxide dissolved in seawater

Reuters Scientists have detected a significant enrichment of helium and carbon dioxide dissolved in sea water south of La Restinga, near the area where there is more volcanic gases bubbling, where helium becomes 4,000 to 35,000 times higher than the concentrations considered normal seawater.

These enrichments are stressed about 100 meters deep in vertical geochemical profiles closer to the bubble located south of the Restinga as a result of the depth of the submarine eruptive mouth, the magnitude of volcanic-download-magmatic hydrothermal and ocean current predominant, according to a statement of the Cabildo of Tenerife.

El Hierro volcano - Underwater volcano spews gas

An underwater volcano near El Hierro in the Canary Islands has begun erupting near the shore, reports Reuters.

The eruptions may be spectacular, but officials have also noticed that the volcano is spewing toxic gases into the air around the island. After a worker studying the volcano became ill, several of the island's beaches were closed. In the video, a local explains that the volcano is also making the island's cats act strangely and eat dead fish.

The volcano, which is just over 200 feet from the surface, began erupting a week ago. The Daily Mail reports the eruption began with a 4.3-magnitude earthquake. According to the International Business Times, the volcano is shooting magma 65 feet into the air.....

Poisonous gas spewing from an undersea volcano has prompted evacuations on the Spanish tourist haven of the Canary Islands.

Witnesses reported explosions from the volcano blasting 25 metres above sea level during a month of unusual volcanic activity.

The southernmost town in the Canaries, La Restinga, has experienced small earthquakes over the past four months, prompting evacuations.

People have also reported seeing dead fish floating on the water, which scientists believe were killed by the toxic gas.

More details about eq hit N.of El Hierro on Friday, which Jorge posted here;

A new earthquake on the Canary Island of El Hierro at 8,36pm on Friday evening, resulted in evacuating 11 homes in the Las Puntas area, and once again closing the Los Roquillos road tunnel. Some rockfalls were caused by the tremor, which was located off the coast of Frontera at a depth of 22 kms. It’s the biggest quake of more than 11,000 tremors to have hit the island since July. As a precaution, the Canary Island Government, closed the road tunnel overnight. It’s the main road between Frontera and Valverde, and was reopened on Saturday morning. Experts say the volcanic fissure is moving slowly towards the island, now at a distance of 1,800m, although they insist this was expected and the situation remains safe. Even so it is reported that half the population of La Restinga have now left their homes.

From AFP:

Surrounded by smoke, the volcano -- located in the eastern Virunga National Park -- was still erupting but posed no threat to locals or the mountain gorillas living in the park, said Congo's Centre for Research and Natural Sciences.

The Virunga National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage site and, aside from being home to some of the region's world-famous (and critically endangered) Mountain Gorillas, at least 20,000 hippopotamuses live in the area.

According to NASA, which imaged the volcano using its Terra satellite, Nyamuragira last erupted in January of 2010. Even though lava flowed more than 21 miles during the eruption, the flow stayed within the park. The ash from the volcano, however, contaminated drinking water in area springs.

In 2002, the nearby Nyiragongo volcano destroyed a large portion of Goma, a city in the eastern part of the country. According to National Geographic, 350,000 residents were forced to flee when more than 15 million cubic yards of lava flowed over the city, destroying 14,000 homes.  http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/11/09/congo-volcano-eruption-nya...

Experts say an eruption on the north of El Hierro in the sea or on land Friday November 11, 2011 VIDEO
IGN does not rule out earthquakes of magnitudes higher than those reported so far on the island the Spanish Institute of Oceanography get the first images taken less than a meter from the volcano lava flow
LAPROVINCIA.ES / EFE El Hierro in the north could suffer an eruption. This was announced on Friday María José Blanco, director of the National Geographic Institute in the Canary Islands.
Blanco has said "winning in an eruption probability in the Gulf in the Sea" and does not exclude the possibility of an eruption on land, although this argument seems even more remote.

IGN director said scientists displaced in the zone do not rule out earthquakes of magnitudes greater than 4,5 degrees. Blanco also notes that during the day today have not been observed in surface phenomena but stresses that "the volcano is still emitting material in La Restinga".
The tunnel of Los Roquillos will remian closed.

NEW IMAGES. Researchers at the Spanish Institute of Oceanography (IEO) have succeeded in taking the first images to less than one meter from the volcano's lava flow, aboard the research vessel Ramon Margalef.

There is plenty of magma deep in El Hierro as to think that the volcano looking for a way out in a place other than La Restinga. If at first it was thought that under the crust would be about fifty million cubic meters of magma, new calculations suggest that low iron can be up to a cubic kilometer of magma, that is, one billion cubic meters, that feed two different processes placed horizontally, one at a depth of between 20 and 25 km and another at a height of 10 to 15 kilometers. The most likely theory is now that they are independent, but may join at some point. Even recharging magmatic material from the depths could generate an eruption last considerably over time, can that for over a year.

The surface water pH has also changed, and has gone from a rate of 7.97 to 5.45 surface to five feet deep. "This decrease of three units of PH is that the media is supporting an acid concentration of a hundred thousand times higher than normal."

Chile, Puyehue-Cordón Caulle volcano - Volcano continues to pump out large amounts of ash, Forcing Delays In Air Links To Chile

Despite being classified as a “minor” (menor, in Spanish) eruption, Chile’s Puyehue Cordon-Caulle Volcano continues to pump out large amounts of ash. This natural-color satellite image shows the pale plume blowing to the northeast of the active vent. According to SERNAGEOMIN, the Chilean National Service of Geology and Mining, ash rose to a height of 5 kilometers (3 miles), and blew as far as 300 km (190 miles) from the volcano. Wide-area satellite images show the full length of the plume, and ash covering the Argentinian plains to the east of Puyehue Cordón-Caulle.

This image was acquired by the Advanced Land Imager (ALI) aboard the Earth Observing-1 (EO-1) satellite on November 4, 2011.

Buenos Aires City's two main air terminals Ezeiza and Aeroparque faced flight disruptions and complications following ash cloud from the Chilean Puyehue volcano - affecting particularly Patagonia to the south of Argentina and links with Santiago de Chile, the capital.
