Japan: A new island appears in the Ogasawara Islands - November 2013
Active volcanoes (Sep 28, 2012)
"Of course all volcanoes will explode, as this is going to be a very severe pole shift. What about the months and years preceding the pole shift? It is no secret that Mammoth Lake and the caldera of Yellowstone are warming up, and the populace has been prepared for these occurrences by the movie Volcano where there, in the middle of LA, lava is bubbling up. In fact, there is a fault line running from the approximate San Diego/LA area, up into the Sierras, and this is liable to rupture rather violently during one of the quakes that precedes the pole shift by some months. Volcanic eruptions from that area in the Sierras can be expected. Will Mount St. Helen erupt? All volcanoes that have been active within the memory of man will begin spewing and burping and oozing, and many that were not expected to become active will reactive. " ZetaTalk - Feb 15, 2000

Etna (Sicily, Italy): During the night, the lava effusion and persistent mild explosive activity from the New SE crater ceased, after being nearly continuously active for over two months. If this is a true end or only a short pause to the latest eruptive phase which on 22 January remains to be seen. The tremor fell back to low levels in correspondence.
Karkar (Northeast of New Guinea): Several ash plumes at estimated altitude of 8,000 ft (2.4 km) were spotted during the past 2 days. This suggests a new eruptive phase could have started at the remote volcano.
Batu Tara (Sunda Islands, Indonesia): After a relatively long time with no spotted ash clouds, an ash plume was seen yesterday again on satellite imagery (VAAC Darwin).
The remote volcano in the Fores Sea has been site of continuing strombolian activity since at least 2006. Some of the eruptions are strong enough to leave ash plumes that can be seen on satellite images.
Merapi (Central Java, Indonesia): A possibly strong eruption was reported from the volcano this afternoon (13:55 GMT). Satellite data showed an ash and SO2 plume drifting SW at estimated 32,000 ft (9 km) (VAAC Darwin). The plume is quickly dissipating, suggesting that the eruption was an isolated (possibly phreatic) explosion. No other details are at the moment available.
Marapi (Western Sumatra, Indonesia): The volcano erupted again yesterday afternoon at 16:15 local time, the volcano observatory post reported. It appears it was one of the largest explosions during the volcano's current phase of activity. Although the eruption was itself not visible due to cloud cover, the seismic signal showed a strong explosion that lasted 38 seconds and relatively "thick" ash fall occurred shortly afterwards in Batipuh and Tanahdatar districts until 17:45.
... [read more]
Dukono (Halmahera): Activity at the volcano continues to be intense. An ash plume was reported extending 80 nautical miles to the west at 10,000 ft (3 km) altitude this morning (VAAC Darwin).
Ubinas (Peru): The volcano's new lava dome continues to grow slowly within the crater. New field observations published yesterday in a detailed report showed that the lava dome is now approx. 120 m in diameter and has completely filled the inner pit left by the explosive activity in 2006 (as of 19 March). Visible glow (even in daylight) indicates very high temperatures.
No explosions have occurred since the vent-clearing explosion on 14 Feb, but the volcano emits a significant plume of steam, SO2 gas and sometimes dilute ash. On 21 and 23 March, the steam-gas-ash plume rose 1800 m above the crater. On 25 March, light ash falls were reported in the towns of Querapi and Ubinas, as well as strong rumbling noises in distances up to 6 km SE. Seismicity remains above background with frequent earthquake swarms related to internal fluid movements.

Thousands Facing Evacuation as Pacaya Volcano Erupts in Guatemala (Mar 1)
A volcano has erupted in Guatemala, prompting the authorities to consider the evacuation of some 3,000 people living in the area.
The Pacaya volcano began spewing ash and lava after a powerful explosion on Saturday afternoon.
New explosions were seen on Sunday, with ash clouds reaching a height or at least 4km (3 miles).
Flights have been diverted from the area, some 50km (30 miles) south of the capital, Guatemala City.
The Pacaya is one of three active volcanoes in the Central American nation. The other two are the Fuego and the Santa Maria.
"We are assessing with the National Disaster Management Centre (Conred) whether we will need to evacuate the 3,000 people who live in the villages of El Rodeo and Patrocinio," said the Pacaya National Park director, Humberto Morales.
"Access to the areas around the volcano has been suspended," he told the Prensa Libre newspaper.

Marapi Volcano Erupts in Indonesia (Feb 26)
Mount Marapi in Indonesia’s West Sumatra province erupted Wednesday, shooting ash to the sky and incurring a downpour of ash and volcanic sand up to 10 km to the south of the crater, an official said.
Powerful bursts of ash, sand and gravel erupted from the volcano located in Tanah Datar and Agam districts at 4.15 p.m. Jakarta time, Warseno, the official in-charge at the observatory post of the volcano, told Xinhua.
However, the height of the column could not be determined visually as visibility was impaired by haze enveloping West Sumatra due to forest fire in the neighbouring province of Riau, he added.
The authorities have closed the area within a three-km danger zone from the crater as the volcano is on third-highest alert level, he said.
So far, the authorities have not recommended any evacuation.
The volcano has had a total of 57 recorded eruptions since January 2014.

Poás Volcano Erupts in Central Costa Rica (Feb 25)
The active volcano erupted just after noon Tuesday in the Poás Volcano National Park.
A webcam from the Volcanological and Seismological Observatory of Costa Rica (OVSICORI) captured the moment a dark cloud exploded from a massive crater of the Poás Volcano.
The research institute, affiliated with the National University of Costa Rica, said the blast was a phreatic explosion which occurs when magma or hot rocks heat surface water to the point where it boils and quickly explodes in a burst of stem.
Earlier this month, Costa Rica's National Seismological Network (RSN) released a report saying that the volcano’s crater was glowing red-hot with molten rock and was emitting sulfur.
The Poás Volcano, a frequently visited tourism site, is one of the country's most prominent natural landmarks.
It is located in a national park of the same name in the Alajuela Province.

Kelut Volcano Update: - 100,000 Evacuated, 3 Dead (Feb 14)
A powerful volcanic eruption on Indonesia's most populous island blasted ash and debris 18 kilometers (12 miles) into the air Friday, killing three people and forcing authorities to evacuate more than 100,000 and close seven airports.
The eruption of Mount Kelud on Java island could be heard up to 200 kilometers (125 miles) away, Indonesia's disaster agency said.
"The eruption sounded like thousands of bombs exploding," Ratno Pramono, a 35-year-old farmer, said as he checked his property in the village of Sugihwaras, about 5 kilometers (3 miles) from the crater. "I thought doomsday was upon us. Women and children were screaming and crying."
Preliminary estimations are that the eruption produced 80 million cubic meters of tephra. At the moment, the volcano continues to emit ash and steam, accompanied by tremors. The government of East Java has declared the state of emergency for the affected area. 350,000 dust masks are being distributed.
BNPB (Civil protection) confirmed 3 fatalities caused by the eruption. Two people died after their houses collapsed under the weight of ash. All of the victims were in Pandasari village less than 7 km from the volcano where 20 cm of ash has fallen.
By late afternoon Friday, ash had spread farther across the island and was falling on the large highlands city of Bandung, more than 500 kilometers away. The government volcanology center said it was uncertain whether ash would also reach the capital, Jakarta, more than 600 kilometers away.

Thousands Evacuated Following Powerful Eruptions at Mt Kelud (Feb 13)
Thousands of people on Java island are being evacuated after Mount Kelud erupted, an Indonesian official said.
Volcanic ash from the major eruption has led to the closure of three international airports and darkened skies on Indonesia's densely populated Java Island.
Ash covered the ground up to 130 kilometers (80 miles) away in Surabaya, the country's second-largest city, witnesses there said.
The country's transport ministry said Jogyakarta, Solo and Surabaya aiports were closed due to reduced visibility and the dangers posed to aircraft engines by ash.
Muhammad Hendrasto, head of the Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation Centre, said the volcano in Kediri regency erupted about 90 minutes after authorities raised its status to the highest level.
He urged about 200,000 people living in 36 villages within the danger zone of six miles (10km) from the crater to evacuate.
A series of huge blasts unleashing stones and gravel caused panic among villagers who immediately fled to safer areas.
"The rains of gravel and sand have reached 15 km from the crater, hitting and impairing those being evacuated. This means that the evacuees must go farther than 15 km," Xinhua quoted Umar Rosadi, a volcanologist, as saying.
Based on data recorded days before the eruption, the official said that there are at least 21,000 people living in the dangerous zone.
